Ethel Kapornyai Fazekas, 85, of Oak Island

Mrs. Ethel Kapornyai Fazekas, 85, of Oak Island, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at her residence.
The memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Ocean View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Roberts and the Rev. Lloyd Pendergraft officiating.
Mrs. Fazekas was born September 17, 1915, in East Chicago, Ind., daughter of the late Joseph and Lydia Nemeth Kapornyai, and moved to Oak Island, from Hammond, Ind., in 1995.
She was a former member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Highland, Ind., where she, for many years, was a member of Tabea Woman's Guild.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 68 years, Frank Fazekas of the home; three daughters, Ethel DiNoto of Boiling Spring Lakes, Cookie Newton of Oak Island and Yolanda Marik of Richmond, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, P.O. Box 1926, Shallotte, NC 28459.

Daniel Carlton Proctor Jr., 84, of Oak Island

Daniel Carlton Proctor Jr., 84, of Oak Island died Sunday, January 21, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 19, 1916, in Pembroke to the late Daniel C. and Bessie Alline Stevens Proctor, and was preceded in death by a sister, Claudia Watson.
Proctor was a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Wood Proctor of the home; two daughters, Jean Murphy and husband, C.E. of Altavista, Va., and Georgia O'Briant and husband, Rob of Wilmington; two brothers, Bill Proctor of Parkton, and Henry Proctor of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Danny Adcock of Wilmington, Will Adcock of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Michael Adcock of Ocean Isle Beach, and Michelle Watson of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Adcock, Blair Adcock, Mia Adcock, Georgianna Watson and Cliff Watson.
A memorial service will be held at Oak Island Presbyterian Church at a later date.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Oak Island Presbyterian Church.

Glen E. Mealy, Jr., 79, of Greensboro

Glen E. Mealy, Jr., 79, of Greensboro, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Masonic graveside rites were held Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mealy was a native of Parkersburg, W. Va., born July 27, 1921, to the late Glen Edwin Mealy, Sr. and Joette Bennington Mealy.
He was a retired executive of Chrysler Corporation.
He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner of Gate City Lodge No. 694.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ray Mealy of the home; two sons, Steve of Oak Island and Philip of California; a daughter, Amy Kephart of Southport; a stepson, Ronald Lindley of Greensboro; his sister, Rosemary Enoch of California; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.

Lucille C. Ferch, former Oak Island resident

Lucille C. Ferch, who resided in Long Beach, for a number of years, died December 24, 2000, in Lakewood, Wash.
She will be interred February 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. in Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.

Harvey Wilson Batten, 83, of Southport

Harvey Wilson Batten, 83, of Southport, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, at Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. William Rice and the Rev. A. L. Todd officiating.
Military graveside rites will be held at Lewis Cemetery in Bladenboro.
Serving as pallbearers will be Gene Strickland, Eddit Stokley, James Brown, Mark Hooten, Kenneth Cooper and Michael Cable.
Batten was born May 27, 1917, in Wilmington, son of the late Rufus I. and Agnes Hammonds Batten, and moved to Southport, from Greensboro, in 1980.
He was a retired technician with Air Products Company in Greensboro and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include a sister, Lucy Hargrove of Bladenboro, and nieces Mary Jane Cooper Matthews of Southport, Sarah Jane Cable of Bladenboro, Hilda Batten of Whiteville, and Clara Smith of Whiteville.
The family will receive friends at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and at other times will be at the home of Mary Jane Cooper Matthews, 526 Jabbertown Road, Southport.

Mrs. Charlotte Spencer Walton of Southport

Mrs. Charlotte Spencer Walton of Southport, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at Dosher Nursing Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Peacock-Newnam chapel.
Interment will follow at Northwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Walton was born March 24, 1935, in Southport, a daughter of the late Ray and Linnie Singletary Spencer.
Mrs. Walton was a graduate of Southport High School.
She was predeceased by her spouse, Joseph William Walton.
Survivors include sons, Dennis Walton of Boiling Spring Lakes, Randy Walton of Kansas and Michael Walton of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Pam Johnson of Supply; a brother, Carey Spencer; and a sister, Pat Hughes, both of Southport. Also surviving are grandchildren Anna Walton, Joey Walton, Jason Walton, Katie Walton, Devan Johnson, Ari Walton and Lauren Walton, and a great-grandchild, Christina Walton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today (Wednesday), at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home.

Thelma Carleene Thompson of Asheboro

Thelma Carleene Thompson, 91, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at Carolina House of Asheboro.
She was a native of Randolph County, the daughter of Will and Ida Redding.
She was owner of Thompson House Restaurant before moving to Southport.
Mrs. Thompson was a ferry pilot during World World II following her graduation from Civilian Pilot Training in Raleigh.
She was a charter member of Raleigh CAP when it organized in 1941.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
A graveside service was held Thursday with Fr. Louie Canino officiating.
Interment was in Mountain View Independent Methodist Church Cemetery.
Her husband, Michael Roy Thompson, Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Mike Thompson, Jr. of Asheboro; a grandson, Michael R. Thompson, III of Wilmington; a foster-brother, Howard Bunting of Archdale.
Memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203-7090, or to the donor's favorite charity.

Luther Neal Buckaloo, 75, of Oak Island

Luther Neal (Buck) Buckaloo, Sgt./Major, USA Retired, of Oak Island, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
The funeral was held Sunday, February 4, with full military honors at McEwen Funeral Service's Charlotte Chapel with the Rev. Fred Killman and Army chaplain officiating.
Interment followed in Sunset Memory Gardens.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 10, at 3 p.m. at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Weather permitting, the service will be held outside in Dosher's courtyard.
Mr. Buckaloo was born October 19, 1925, in Charlotte, a son of the late James LaFayette Buckaloo and Reppie Ila Byrum Buckaloo.
He grew up in the North Caldwell Street neighborhood and graduated from Charlotte Technical High School.
In November of 1943, he was drafted and was sent to Camp Fannin, Texas, where he completed his basic training, then to Ft. Benning, Ga., assigned to the 71st Infantry Division.
His next assignment was January, 1945, in Le Havre, France, serving as rifleman and squad leader with the 14th Infantry.
His service continued through the end of World War II, the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam, totaling over 32 years, with a few as a recruiter in Charlotte.
Awards and commendations include: Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, American Theater Ribbon, E.T.O. Ribbon, Occupation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, one O.L.C. Army Commendation Medal, two O.L.C. Bronze Star Medal, two O.L.C. Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with 60 DVDC, Korean Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Emblem, Good Conduct Medal 1-10 Awards, Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
Mr. Buckaloo was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Benfield Buckaloo, to whom he was married in 1952.
Following his military career, he graduated from Hamilton Business College and was a realtor with Century 21 Realty Co., a member of VFW Post 9488, the Red Fox Golf Club, Moose Lodge 2059 in Oak Island, Oak Island Elks Lodge 2769, and was a charter member of the World War II Memorial.
Surviving are daughters, Patricia Marie Buckaloo of Charlotte, Pamela B. Egel and husband, Michael of Marshville, and Linda B. Hudson and husband, Tim of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Harris, Mallory Elizabeth Harris, Evan Drew Egel, Brandon Lee Neal Hudson, Lorrell Wren Hudson and Elen Elizabeth Hudson; brother, William F. Buckaloo of Forest City; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Dosher Memorial Hospital and all the doctors and the entire staff, friends and associates of Mr. Buckaloo on Oak Island, for their unfailing love and support.

Harry Carlton Furlow, 61, of Southport

Harry Carlton Furlow, 61, of Villa Nova Loop SE, Southport, died Sunday, February 4, 2001, at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
The memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ocean View United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Fred Roberts officiating.
Furlow was born June 17, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Harry Carlton and Lilian Borme Furlow, and moved here seven years ago from West Virginia.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Westchester State College, and was a salesman.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Overdeer Furlow of the home; two sons, Matthew Jarod Furlow and Harry Carlton Furlow, III of Tennessee; two daughters, Heather Ann Polcaster of Chicago, Ill., and P. Rachel Kaufman of King; a sister, Carol Tracy of Lancaster, Pa.; and a grandson, Thomas Elliott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3131 Wrightsville Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28403.

He is survived by his wife, Maria B. Corin of St. James; daughters, Linda C. Batley of Pittsboro, and Sonya L. Munoz of Pt. Washington, N.Y.; a son, Christian C. Corin of Plandome, N.Y.; their spouses and five grandchildren.
