Herbert Franklin Rogers, 88, of Southport
Herbert Franklin Rogers, 88, of Southport, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at Autumn Care of Shallotte.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Northwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Tracey McCrary officiating.
Rogers was born September 20, 1912, in Brunswick County, son of the late Harvey and Mary Anne Hankins Rogers, and attended Full Gospel House of Prayer In Jesus Name.
He was a retired carpenter and brick mason.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sophie Jones Rogers, and a grandson, Andy Rogers.
Survivors include a son, Frankie Rogers and wife Lee of Southport; a daughter, Zona Sanders of Boiling Spring Lakes; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Thomas Edward Spittle Sr., 43, of Southport
Thomas Edward Spittle Sr., 43, of Southport, died Friday, January 26, 2001, at his residence.
The family received friends on January 27, at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home, and Mr. Spittle was later cremated.
Spittle was predeceased by his parents, Ernest Edward Spittle and Catherine Marie Spittle, both of Flagler Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Hults Spittle of Southport, and a son, Thomas Spittle of the home. Other survivors include brothers, Butch of Hickory and Steve of San Mateo, Fla.; sisters, Debbie of Fredericksburg, Va., and Donna of Virginia; a nephew and a niece.

Thomas Edward Blackwell, former resident
Thomas Edward Blackwell, 87, formerly of Boiling Spring Lakes, died February 9, 2001, at Fifth Avenue Health Care in Rome, Ga.
He was the widower of Virginia (Ginny) McGaha Blackwell, who preceded him in death on December 11, 2000.
They were married for 67 years.
Blackwell was a World War II veteran and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1962.
He retired from a second career as regional sales manager with Sylvania Electronics, before moving to Boiling Spring Lakes.
He was an active member of the community for over 20 years and a member of the volunteer fire department.
He served as president of the Men's Golf Association at Fox Squirrel Country Club.
Blackwell was a Mason, HAM radio operator and an avid golfer.
He was born and reared in Tryon.
He will be buried in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C., with military honors.
He is survived by his daughters, Carole Merriam and husband, Bob of Charlotte, Deb Ledbetter and husband, Terry of Rome, Ga., Lynn Story and husband, Winn of Flowery Branch, Ga.; son, Thomas Blackwell, II and wife, Terry of Lithonia, Ga.; grandchildren, Janet Friend, Christy Kendrick, Shelley Womack, Bobby Merriam, Ashley Ledbetter, David Carver, Jenny Blackwell and Tommy Blackwell; four great-grandchildren.

Virginia Etheridge Benner of Washington
Mrs. Virginia Etheridge Benner, 95, of Washington, most recently a resident at Britthaven of Washington, died in Beaufort County Hospital on February 8, 2001.
Funeral services were held Saturday at First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Olsen.
Burial was in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Benner was born in Norfolk, Va., on October 27, 1905, the daughter of the late Clyde and Letitia Craig Etheridge.
She was educated in the Norfolk schools and was a graduate of Norfolk High School, and later, the Norfolk Business College.
She was married in 1924, to John Samuel Benner, who preceded her in death in 1968.
Mr. Benner was an attorney and the business manager of the old Tayloe Hospital.
Mrs. Benner was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Women's Circles of the Church.
She was a charter member and the last 50-year member of Washington Chapter #7 Order of the Eastern Star, and had been awarded the first life membership of the local chapter.
Her son, Clyde H. Benner and his wife of Oak Island, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her.
A son, Col. John S. Benner, Jr., preceded her in death.

Dr. Jack Bernard Perkins, 72, of Wilmington
Dr. Jack Bernard Perkins of Wilmington, died at Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital on February 5, 2001.
A native of Wilmington, Perkins was born February 2, 1929, the son of the late Lela Meredith and William Fate Perkins.
He was a summa cum laude graduate of Randolph Macon College and subsequently served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
He then attended and was graduated from Bowman Gray Medical College in 1957.
Following five years of general practice in Southport, Perkins completed an anesthesia residency at Emory University in Atlanta, remaining and practicing there until 1970, when he joined DeKalb Anesthesia Associates.
He retired in 1989.
Perkins was a self-taught musician who learned to play several instruments including the trumpet, piano and organ.
He was predeceased by a sister, Meredith Van Dyke Good.
Survivors include two brothers, W. Harold Perkins of Orlando, Fla., and George W. Perkins and wife Louise of Wilmington; six nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held in Atlanta on Friday with Dr. Robert W. Gray officiating.
Interment was conducted by the Rev. John Misenheimer at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington on Saturday.

Cindy Ann Dawkins, 40, of Bolivia
Cindy Ann Dawkins, 40, of Bolivia, died Sunday, February 11, 2001, at her residence.
She was born November 21, 1960, in Meridian, Miss.
She was the daughter of the late Sherman Ogle and Joann Bell.
Survivors include her husband, James Rory Dawkins, and two sons, James Rory Dawkins, Jr. and William Gaines Dawkins.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Sunset Harbor on Thursday, February 15, at 5 p.m.
Visitation will be held after the service.

William Storey, 93, of Weirton, W. Va.
William Storey, 93, of Weirton, W. Va., died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Weirton Medical Center.
He was born December 8, 1906, a son of the late Samuel and Mammie Swords Storey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Storey, Jr., and two sisters, Helen Pegg and Mary Evelyn Hughes.
He was retired from Chrysler Corp. in Twinsburg, Ohio.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Ravenna, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Geho Storey, whom he married November 3, 1926; three daughters, Eleanor Louise Bennett of Weirton, W. Va., Ruth Ann Zubricky of Fayette City, Pa., and Joyce Elaine Pennock of Southport; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Interment was in Beallsville Cemetery, Beallsville, Pa.
James Martin Lee, 85, of Greenville
James Martin Lee, 85, of Greenville, died Friday, June 9, 2000, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service was conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel.
Burial was in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Lee, a native of Johnston County, was a lifelong resident of Pitt County.
He was engaged in farming and carpentry for most of his life and was a member of Mt. Calvary Free Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gurney Lee of the Farmville Health Center; daughters Betty Nelson of Big Rock, Tenn., Mary Meeks of Fountain, Brenda Vandiford of Scuffleton and Joyce Ladd of Bolivia; sons James L. Lee of Brighton, Tenn., and Jerry W. Lee of LaGrange; a brother, Issac Lee of Rocky Mount; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
