PHYLLIS S. BENFIELD
Phyllis Stafford Benfield, 75, of 3308 16th St. NE, Hickory, died July 28 [2000] at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
A member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, she was employed at Southern Glove in Newton, and was later a homemaker.
She taught Sunday School, led the youth group and was active in the church throughout her life.
Services were held at the church by the Revs. Homer Greene, Jerry Laughter and Tom Huntsinger; burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her husband, Homer Benfield; sons Harold Benfield; and Kelvin Benfield of Charlotte; daughter Leemanda Benfield of Hickory; sisters Joann Wagner and Sarah Vivian Bowman of Hickory; and one grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Sue Keller Berry, 99, of 16th Ave. NE, Hickory, died July 28 [2000] at Hickory Manor following a period of declining health.
A homemaker, she was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where services were held by the Rev. Dale Watts.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Hickory Funeral Home was in charge.
Survivors include sons Jim and Clarence Berry of Hickory, and Glenn Berry of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Clifton “Red” Grover Brown, 58, of Hickory, died July 28, 2000 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Ma.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Brown and Robin Fox of Taylorsville, and Judy Brown of Graham; and eight grandchildren.

Clifton (Red) Grover Brown, 58, of Hickory, died July 28 [2000] in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Md.
He was a truck driver for Hickory Hill Furniture.
Services were held at Providence Baptist Church by the Revs. Ernie Richards and Michael Harrill, Jr.; burial was in the church cemetery.

LOLA J. CROUSE
Lola Jones Crouse, 86, of Joe Crouse Road, Maiden, died July 29 [2000] at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
Born in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ida Goodson Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of Center View Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Wade Crouse of Newton; daughters Colleen Gilleland of Maiden, and Aileen Little of Denver; sister Julia Hicks of Maiden; and six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at her church by the Revs. Larry McCracken and Grady Barringer; burial was in the church cemetery.

Ray Junior Deal, 69, of Snow Creek Road NE, Hickory, died July 28 [2000] at his home.
Born in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Edward Cleatus and Minnie Houston Deal.
Retired from C. R. Laine Furniture, he was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where services were held by the Rev. Rick Carter.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Hickory Funeral Home was in charge.

BARBARA H. HOUSTON
Barbara Elizabeth Helton Houston, 99, of Icard, died July 30 [2000] at Frye Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.
A homemaker, she was a member of Shoups Grove Baptist Church, where services were held by the Revs. J. C. Bradley and Tony Land.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include daughters Katherine Patton of Hickory, Betty Kiser and Christine Hoyle of Icard; sons Eugene Houston of Maiden, D.C., Lenorie, and David (Bill) Houston of Icard, and Vernon Houston of Hickory; son-in-law Vance Brittain of Hickory, daughter-in-law Flavie Houston of Icard, and sister-in-law Keron Evans of Connelly Springs; and 42 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren, 29 great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great-grandchild and a number of step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
ARCHIBALD A. JOYNER
Archibald Andrews Joyner, 86, of 904 2nd St. NE, Hickory, died July 26 [2000] at Valdese General Hospital.
He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Ascension, where he was a lay reader from age 21 until his death.
He graduated from Hickory High School in 1930 and was an assistant to the professor in physics at Lenoir-Rhyne College.
He earned his BS in physics from Lenoir-Rhyne and after graduation, went to New York City, to study at the RCA Institute.
He became an electrical engineer and was hired by RCA in Camden, NJ, spending 23 years there, then he and his wife moved to Wheaton, Ill., where he was a manufacturing representative.
He worked there 27 years and retired to Waynesville.
Services were held at Grace Church in the Mountain, Waynesville, by Dr. Howard White; inurnment was at the church.

WILLIAM M. LITAKER, SR.
William Mundy Litaker, Sr., 66, of Hickory, died July 28 [2000] at his home.
A member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, he was retired from Hickory City Schools, where he was a teacher and educator for 31 years.
At St. Andrews, he was Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and served on the church council.
He was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College and received a master's degree from Appalachian State University.
He was an Eagle Scout.
A memorial service was held at St. Andrew's by the Rev. Richard W. Fritz, Jr.; burial was at the church.

Nelle Donnelly Lowman, 89, of Hildebran, died July 28 [2000] at Eastside Medical Center, Snellville, Ga.
A homemaker, she was a member of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church, where services were held by the Revs. Gary Coble, Steve Brown and Don Phillips.
Burial was in First Baptist Church Cemetery, Hildebran.
