Ms. Mary Lillian Collins, 97, of Southport

Ms. Mary Lillian Collins, 97, of Southport, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Ocean Trail Convalescent Center.
Funeral mass was conducted Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a member, with Fr. Douglas Lawson officiating.
Burial followed in Northwood Cemetery.
Ms. Collins was born March 17, 1903, in Georgetown, S.C., a daughter of the late Weston Gibson and Lenora Elizabeth Williams Collins, and lived in Brunswick County, for over 70 years.
She worked as a waitress at Mack's Cafe for 25 years and served as a volunteer at Dosher Memorial Hospital for many years.
Ms. Collins was one of the first presidents of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Ladies Guild and at the time of her death, was the oldest member of the church.
She is survived by a cousin, Eva Bryan of Wilmington.

Mrs. Miriam Gray, 75, of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Mrs. Miriam Gray, mother of Southport police chief, Robert Gray, Jr., died June 10, 2000, in Port Charlotte, Fla., where she had lived since 1991.
Mrs. Gray was born November 8, 1924, in Camden, N.J., and was a former secretary for RCA's computer division there.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in New Jersey.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Gray is survived by her husband, Robert.
They celebrated 57 years of marriage on the day of her death.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine Dugan.
Survivors also include a sister, Evelyn Wherrett, who lives in California.
Mrs. Gray leaves five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the Make a Wish Foundation, 100 West Clarendon, Suite 2200, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
National Cremation Society in Port Charlotte is in charge of arrangements.

Boyd David Phillips, 82, of Kernersville

Boyd David Phillips, 82, of Kernersville, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born April 3, 1918, to the late Oscar Phillips and Cora Bost Phillips.
A graduate of Cramerton High School, he was formerly employed at Cannon Mills, was an independent contractor and was building inspector in Salisbury and Long Beach.
While residing here, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of the N.C. Building and Plumbing Association.
His wife of 49 years, Frances Suther Phillips, died in 1990.
Surviving are three daughters, Dr. Kaye Micek of Wilmington; Mrs. Elaine Poston of Belews Creek, and Patricia Stover of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Gene Phillips of Concord, and Harmon Phillips of Sharpesburg, Ga.; one sister, Ruth Brittain of Gastonia; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at First Baptist Church, China Grove, with the Rev. Ed Daniel officiating.
Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Oak Island, 4608 Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465; or Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 306 Main Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.

Gloria Haight Marvin, 75, of Caswell Beach

Mrs. Gloria Haight Marvin, 75, of Caswell Beach, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service was conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Webb and Paul Osborne officiating.
Mrs. Marvin was born March 25, 1925, in Amityville, N.Y., a daughter of the late Gilbert and Gladys Cooke Haight, and moved here in 1980, from Hampton Bays, Long Island, N.Y.
She was a longtime member of the Caswell Beach Turtle Watch Program.
Survivors include her husband, Wilton C. (Bill) Marvin of the home; two sons, Tom Young of Rye, N. Y., and Clark Marvin of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Sharon Accettella of Babylon, N. Y., and Joanne Wells of Warrenton, Va.; a brother, Gilbert Haight of Southport; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Caswell Beach Turtle Watch Program, 210 Mercer Street, Oak Island, NC 28465.

Elizabeth Fowler Phillips, 66, of Oak Island

Elizabeth Fowler Phillips, 66, of Oak Island, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at her home.
She was born November 18, 1933, to the late Jessie H. and Bleeker Long Fowler.
She moved here in 1969 from Mint Hill.
She was a homemaker, a charter member of Long Beach VFW, and a member of Oak Island Beautification Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Tonia Stidham of Oak Island, and Tami Crisco of Southport; a brother, Ney Fowler of Georgia; four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, 3 p.m., at Northwood Cemetery in Southport.
Friends may call at 111 NE 10th Street, Oak Island, from 6 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday), and from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, at Northwood Cemetery.

Carleton Estilow Jess, 84, of Southport

Carleton Estilow Jess, 84, of Southport, died Tuesday, August 1, 2000.
He was born in Swedesboro, N.J., to the late Clara P. and Harry T. Jess on April 26, 1916.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lois R. Jess.
He is survived by a son, Carleton R. Jess, and daughter-in-law Brenda K. Jess of Oak Island; two grandsons, Brian R. Jess and Scott M. Jess, also of Oak Island; and a daughter, Elva L. Jess of Southport.
Jess served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and was graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park.
He was retired from the U. S. Postal Service, working with the railway mail division initially in New York, and later, in the main post office in Washington, D. C.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, active when younger with United Methodist Men.
A memorial service was held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Southport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Marie Carbis Jaccino, 91, of St. James, died Thursday, August 3, 2000, at her residence.
A cryptside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Cape Fear Memorial Park Mausoleum, with Fr. Douglas Lawson officiating.
Mrs. Jaccino was born September 22, 1908, in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline Fiori Carbis, and moved to St. James, from Islip, Long Island, N.Y., in 1993.
She was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a son, Robert A. Jaccino of St. James; a brother, Harry Carbis of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Dora Jaccino of New York, N.Y.; two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 820 North 2nd Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

George Henry Reiner, 67, of Bolivia

George Henry Reiner, 67, of the Sunset Harbor community, Bolivia, died Saturday, August 5, 2000, at his residence.
The funeral was conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Faith Community Chapel, with the Rev. Lewis Benton officiating.
Graveside service with full military rites was held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday), at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake.
Reiner was born October 19, 1932, in Southern Pines, son of the late William and Florence Khorring Reiner, and moved to Sunset Harbor, from Carthage, in 1982.
A 1954 graduate of Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, he was retired from the U.S. Army following 22 years service.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
In 1996 he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Knight Reiner, and is survived by four children, Anna Whalen and husband, Bill of Attleboro, Mass., Kathy Burns and husband, Keith of Dyersburg, Tenn., William D. (Bill) Reiner and wife Anna of Wilmington and Doris Hulse and husband Phil of Sunset Harbor; seven grandchildren, Douglas and Colleen Whalen, Jennifer, Jessica and Katelin Burns and George David and Sarah Reiner; his fiance, Mary Walls of Boiling Spring Lakes, and her four children and seven grandchildren.

Hansford Ray Harrelson, 53, of Oak Island

Hansford Ray Harrelson, 53, of Oak Island, died Monday, August 7, 2000, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Harrelson was born September 1, 1946, in Lumberton, son of the late John and Madeline Phillips Harrelson, and moved to Oak Island, in 1973.
He had served in the U.S. Navy and was employed by CP&L from 1967 through 1995.
He was former president of Oak Island Fishing Club.
Survivors include his children, Stoney Harrelson and Courtney Raye Harrelson, both of Wilmington, and their mother, Faye Stone Harrelson of Oak Island; two brothers, Archie Carlton Harrelson and wife, Sharlene of Graham and William Truett Harrelson of Lumberton; a sister, Jenny Fowler of Lumberton; nieces and nephews, Stacy and Chad of Lumberton, and Melissa and Allen of Graham; a maternal aunt, Velenia Thompson of Lumberton; and his in-laws, Linwood and Irene Stone and Elizabeth Stone of Lumberton, Linda, Ray and Jacob Goff of Fayetteville, and Rena and Mark Giles of Wilmington.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Chapel.
Visitation will immediately follow the memorial service.

John Lewis Wagoner, 75, of Hillsborough

John Lewis Wagoner, 75, of Hillsborough, died Wednesday, August 1, 2001.
Wagoner also was an Oak Island resident.
He was a native of Orange County, and a retired builder.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy B. Wagoner; three sons, Dwight Wagoner of Oak Island, Charles Wagoner and Andrew Wagoner, both of Hillsborough; a daughter, Gayle W. Alexander of Franklin, N.J.; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four brothers, L. D. Wagoner of Hillsborough, Roy Wagoner of High Point, Doc Wagoner of Holly Ridge, and Buddy Wagoner of Hillsborough; four sisters, Louise Workman of Millersville, Md., Alma Brown of Hillsborough, Rachel Trexler of High Point, and Mae (Ann) Weaver of Oak Island.
He was predeceased by brothers, Jesse Wagoner, Horace Wagoner, Charlie Wagoner, Calvin Wagoner and unnamed twins, and a sister, Sally Upchurch.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial was in the Hillsborough Town Cemetery.
