ROSE M. THOMPSON

Rose Marie Magliarditi Thompson, 57, of Icard, died July 30 [2000] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
A paralegal with attorney Kirby Kepford, she attended Granite Falls Church of God.
Services were held at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donald Caldwell; memorials may be made to the Association for the Blind.
Survivors include her husband, Verdell Thompson; son David Thompson of Hildebran; daughters Donna Helms and Doreen Abernethy of Hickory, and Denise Wiggins of Connelly Springs; brother Vincent Magliarditi of Clifton; father Peter Magliarditi of Wayne, NJ; and seven grandchildren.

INEZ W. WILLIAMS

Inez White Williams, 70, of 3272 47th Ave. Pl. NE, Hickory, died July 25 [2000] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of Springs Road Baptist Church and retired from Centel.
Services were held at Springs Road Baptist by the Rev. Arthur Yount; burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the church, 3580 Springs Road NE, Hickory 28601 or to American Heart Association, PO Box 2636, Chapel Hill 27515. Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Survivors include a son, Gary L. Watts of Taylorsville; daughter Judy Poole of Taylorsville; brothers Perry and Paul White of Bethlehem; sister Ruth Johnson of Hickory; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

ANN BEAVER WITHERSPOON

Ann Beaver Witherspoon, 82, of 1309 14 St. Dr., NE, Hickory, died at her home.
Born in Blue Ridge, Ga., she was the daughter of Hattie Yelton Beaver and Obe Beaver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Witherspoon and son, Jimmy Whitherspoon.
A member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, she was retired from Catawba Sox, Newton, where she worked for over 40 years.
She was very active in the Democratic party.
Services were held at Bass-Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. Phillip Vos; burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Christian School Foundation, 1225 29th Ave. Dr. NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Frank and Jeanette Ridley, brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Carrie Yelton, daughter-in-law, Sandy M. Whitherspoon, three grandchildren, two great-children, a number of nieces and nephews.

Edna J. Aldridge

Edna Elsie Johnson Aldridge, 76, of Hickory, died Nov. 27 [2000] at Brian Center East.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Aldridge was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Howard Aldridge.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert Wiley Aldridge, Sr.; daughter Judy Aldridge Lail of Hickory; sons Hubert Wiley Aldridge, Jr. of Rhodhiss, Garland Lee Aldridge and Joseph Douglas Aldridge, both of Hickory; sisters Thelma Austin and Rose Kerley, both of Taylorsville, Tootsie Chapman of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Linda Comer of Stony Point; brothers Eugene Johnson of Taylorsville, and Conrad Johnson of Maryland; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Bert Dixon conducted services at Calvary Baptist Church, and burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1823 3rd Avenue SW, Hickory 28602.

Lula S. Barger

Lula Smith Barger, 79, of Hickory, died Nov. 24 [2000] at Brian Center in Viewmont.
She was born in Catawba County, to the late Robert A. and Dovie Whitworth Smith.
Mrs. Barger was retired from Red Sox Hosiery Mill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Barger.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Hayes of Hickory; a son, Bobby Barger of Hickory; a sister, Wilma Wilkie of Hickory; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at Catawba Memorial Park by the Rev. Jerry Stines.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Memorials may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, 170 Duke Street, Granite Falls 28630.

Virginia B. Barlow

Virginia McGuire Bullock Barlow, 88, of Hickory, and formerly of Southern Pines, and Hamlet, N.C., died Nov. 21 [2000] at Brian Center East in Hickory.
Mrs. Barlow was a retired teacher from Hamlet High School.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Charles Bullock; her second husband, David Barlow; and a daughter, Margaret Virginia Bullock.
Survivors include daughters Sarah Elizabeth Bullock of Washington, D.C., and Eugenia Bullock Miller of Hickory; brother William B. McGuire of Charlotte; and one grandson.
A private graveside service was held at Mary Love Cemetery in Hamlet, N.C.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.

Fulmer Bowman

Fulmer Bowman, 84, of Hickory, died Nov. 22 [2000] at Pellcare Nursing Home, following a period of declining health.
He was born in Catawba County, to the late O.P. and Bessie Bowman.
Mr. Bowman was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a retired car salesman for Rodman Chevrolet in Fresno, Calif.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Lackey Bowman.
Surviving him are three sisters, Revonda B. Huffman of Hickory, Lorette B. Hicks of Hildebrand and Janette Queen of Shelby.
The Rev. James Stephenson conducted services at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel and entombment followed in Catawba Memorial Park.

Mae L. Bowman

Mae Lee Bowman, 74, of Startown Road in Newton, died unexpectedly on Nov. 26 [2000] at a Hickory hospital.
She was born in Catawba County to the late Matthew M. and Minnie Lee Sigmon Bowman.
She was a homemaker.
Miss Bowman is survived by sisters Mary Alice Keller and Susie Belle Starr, both of Startown, and Sarah Starnes of Hickory; and a brother, John Lewis Bowman of Startown.
The Rev. Richard T. Carter conducted a graveside service at St. Paul’s Memorial Park.
Hickory Funeral Home served the family.

Carl D. Bunton, Jr.

Carl D. Bunton, Jr., 70, of Hickory, died Nov. 26 [2000] at a Hickory hospital.
An active church member, he was a Sunday school teacher and church elder.
He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, a former executive with Champion Paper Company, and a retired furniture manufacturer.
Mr. Bunton was a member of Lake Hickory Country Club, Catawba Country Club, Civitan Club and Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jane Lewis Bunton; daughters Sheri Bunton Gillette of Raleigh, Julia Bunton Hunt of Wilmington, and Laura Catherine Bunton of Richmond, Va.; sons Carl D. Bunton, III (Rusty) of Hickory, and Michael Edward Bunton of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters Jean Bunton Hodgkinson of Conover, and Mildred Kirby-Blair of Lincoln City, Ore.; brother Larry E. Bunton of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services were conducted at Northminster Presbyterian Church.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Memorials may be made to either Northminster Presbyterian Church or to Grandfather Children’s Home in Banner Elk.

Hugh E. Edwards

Hugh Elmer Edwards of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and formerly of Hickory, died Nov. 22 [2000] at the V.A. Medical Center in Charleston, S.C.
Mr. Edwards was retired from an insulation company and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Lackey Edwards.
Surviving him is a niece, Susan Wiltsie of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
A graveside service was held at Oakwood Cemetery.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 342 2nd Avenue SE, Hickory 28602.
