Rebecca C. Marlow
Rebecca Cody Marlow, 86, of 28th Street NW in Hickory, died Nov. 24 [2000] at a Hickory hospital.
She was born in Catawba County to the late Emmett Wesley and Ella Mull Cody.
Mrs. Marlow was a member of Christ United Baptist Church and was retired from Ivey Weavers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Philip C. Marlow.
Survivors include her husband, Jeffie D. Marlow; sons Thomas Keith Marlow, Sr. of Hickory, and Jeffrey E. Marlow of Morganton; sister Susan Cody Howard of Hickory; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The Rev. E.B. Elmore conducted services at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, and burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Clara K. Marlowe
Clara Keller Marlowe, 81, of Hickory, died Nov. 24 [2000] at Brian Center in Viewmont.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hickory, and was a retired salesperson with Melville’s Shoe Department.
Mrs. Marlowe is survived by her husband, L.J. (Red) Marlowe; sons James Richard Marlowe of Newton and Stephen E. Marlowe of Charlotte; sisters Goldie Johnson of Vale, and Mildred Huffman of Mt. View; brother Leroy Keller of Hickory; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The Rev. Dr. William Leathers and the Rev. Pat Pearce conducted services at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, and burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.
ROBERT J. MARTIN IV
Robert Jouette Martin IV, 49, died Sunday, Nov. 26, [2000] at his home in Simi Valley CA.
A former Hickory resident, he was a brother to Hickory educator Dr. Nicole Martin Pope and Keith T. Martin of Charlotte, producer and managing director of the Charlotte Repertory Theatre.
Martin, a 1969 graduate of Hickory High School, was a computer engineering and design consultant specializing in micro-miniaturization, and was active in school and community affairs.
He was born in 1951 in Pasadena, CA, to the late Jane Whitener Martin, a native of Hickory, and the late Robert J. Martin, III.
He was a descendant of Virginia Revolutionary War hero Jacques Jouette and 18th century Catawba Valley pioneer Michael Weidner.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Steele Martin, and their three children, Robert J. Martin, V, 14, Nicole Martin, 12, and Teddy Martin, 9.
He is also survived by brothers and sisters including Oxford, OH, educator Janet Martin Kretschmer; Michele Martin Dienno, a graphic design and advertising consultant, also of Oxford, OH; Michael W. Martin of Santa Ana, CA, a food service executive; Kevin K. Martin, a touring dance professional and auditions director for the Nutmeg Ballet in Fairfield, CT; and Brian Xan Martin of Costa Mesa, CA, an actor in the Los Angeles area; and by his maternal uncle, Julian G. Whitener of Hickory, and by his maternal aunt Elizabeth Martin Amos of Towson, MD.
The family will hold a private memorial service in the Simi Valley area.
They have requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Robert J. Martin IV Family Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2584, Hickory, NC 28603.
Personal correspondence will be forwarded to both East and West Coast family members from the Hickory address.
Marguerite H. Parke
Marguerite “Marge” Hull Parke, 91, of 2nd Street SE in Conover, died Nov. 26 [2000] at a Hickory hospital.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Conover, and was a retired photographer and owner of Falcon Studio.
Mrs. Parke was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred W. Parke.
She is survived by several nieces, neighbors and friends.
Memorial services were held at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kerry Fralic officiating.

Juanita B. Sigmon
Juanita Bryant Sigmon, 68, of Westway Drive in Conover, died unexpectedly on Nov. 23 [2000] at her residence.
Mrs. Sigmon was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, where she had been active as a Sunday school teacher and with the youth and various other duties.
She was a retired employee of Southern Furniture.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey L. “Bud” Sigmon.
Survivors include son Allen Sigmon of Conover; daughter Elaine Sigmon Weaver of Newton; sister Jackie Drum of Hickory; brothers Eugene Bryant of Hickory, Clyde Bryant, Jr. of Newton, and James Bryant of Conover; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at the Conover City Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Carroll Bartholomew officiating.

John C. Smathers
John C. Smathers, 51, of Madison, Ala., died Nov. 18 [2000] at his home.
Mr. Smathers was a veteran of the U.S. Army and owned John Smathers, Inc.
He was a member of University Baptist Church and served as a volunteer firefighter.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Doris and William Howard Goans of Huntsville, Ala.; sister Louise Brezin of Hickory; and half-sister Martha Potts of Madison, Ala.
A memorial service was held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, with the Revs. Dan Summerlin and Bill McKinney officiating.

Rev. Ted L. Starnes, Sr.
Rev. Ted Linzy Starnes, Sr., 76, of Hickory, died Nov. 26 [2000] at his residence.
He was a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.
A Baptist minister, he pastured several local churches and was also president and part owner of Starnes Industries.
Rev. Starnes was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving him are his wife of 55 years, Kathleen Austin Starnes, and a son, Ted Linzy Starnes, Jr., of Hickory.
Services were held at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Don Ingle and Jack Ray Hodge officiating.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Myrtle M. Whitener
Myrtle Marie Whitener, 79, formerly of Granite Falls, died Nov. 23 [2000] at the N.C. Lutheran Home.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Temple and was a retired seamer with Reese’s Finishing Co.
Mrs. Whitener was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Lee Whitener; son Nathaniel Whitener; and daughter Patricia Ann VanHorn.
Surviving her are sons Daniel R. Whitener of Mt. View, and Paul Rudledge Whitener of Icard; daughters Dorothy Marie Vandenburg and Julia K. Hefner, both of Hickory; sisters Helen Houston of Bethlehem, Ruth VonArk of Monroe, Wis., Nancy Mays and Barbara Price, both of Granite Falls; brother John Robert Mace of Marion, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Ledford officiating.
Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.
Rev. Robert W. Winters, Sr.
Rev. Robert W. Winters, Sr., 97, of Squirrel Creek Road in Newland, N.C., formerly of Conover, died Nov. 27 [2000] at his residence, following a period of declining health.
He was born in Catawba County, to the late James F. and Rosa McRee Winters.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as Visitation Pastor for 18 years after retiring from full time ministry.
He served as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City, Pa., for 18 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Boggs Winters.
Surviving are sons Paul Winters of St. Michael's, Md., and Robert Winters, Jr. of Enon, Ohio; daughters Sylvia W. English of Newland, N.C., and Patricia Winters of Tilghman, Md.; brother John Winters of N.C.; sister Elizabeth Freeze of Statesville; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 30 at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.
The Pastors James P. Zimmerman and Tim Smith and Bishop Leonard Bolick will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
