Stella L. Hyatt
GRANITE FALLS – Stella Laney Hyatt, 75, of Camelot Manor, Granite Falls, died May 30 [2001] at Camelot Manor.
Born July 14, 1916 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Bertha Willet Laney.
Mrs. Hyatt was a member of Rhodhiss First Baptist Church, where she had worked in the nursery for many years.
She was retired from Pacific Mills as a textile worker.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Johnnie Hyatt; son Bobby Allen Hyatt; sister Notsie Rash; and brothers John and William (Bill) Laney.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Roger James and Linda Hyatt of Granite Falls, and William Clyde and Judi Hyatt of Patterson, N.C.; granddaughters Sherry Helton of Connelly Springs, Sandy Bumgarner of Rhodhiss, and Charity Morrison of Granite Falls; grandsons Rick Sisk of Connelly Springs, and Gregory Hyatt of Lenoir; and six great-grandchildren.
Pastors Conrad Hefner and Robert Livingston conducted June 1 services at Mrs. Hyatt’s church, and burial was in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.
Pallbearers were William Helton, Andy Morrison, David Bumgarner, Rick Sisk, Ronnie Rash and Charles Laney.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
Memorials may be made to Rhodhiss First Baptist Church.

Glen W. Kirby
HICKORY – Glen Wilborn Kirby, 71, of Hickory, died May 29 [2001] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1930 in Burke County, he was the son of the late John C. and Daisy Settlemyre Kirby.
Mr. Kirby was retired from General Motors after 32 years of service, having worked in the Swartz Creek/Gaines Michigan, area.
He had served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Carole Rawlins Kirby; son Stephen Kirby of Hickory; daughters Glenda Fisher of St. Peters, Mo., and Deana McMurty of Granite Falls; grandsons Larry and Gary McMurty of Rhodhiss, Barry McMurty of Fort Bragg, N.C., Terry McMurty of Granite Falls, and Joel and Jake Fisher of St. Peters, Mo.; granddaughter Heather Fisher of St. Peters, Mo.; great-grandson Alan McMurty of Rhodhiss; and a host of cousins and friends.
Services were conducted June 2 at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Floyd Perry and burial was in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Mahan, John Settlemore and Mr. Kirby’s grandsons.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 172 North Main Street, Granite Falls 28630.

Raymond Morgan
NEWTON – Raymond “Buddy” Morgan, 86, of Springdale Drive, Newton, died May 29 [2001] at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1915 in Boothville, La., he was the son of the late Frank and Alveretta Goodman Morgan.
Mr. Morgan was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was retired from Freeport Sulphur-McMoran.
He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army.
A grandson, Christopher Lee Morgan, one brother and two sisters also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie B. Morgan; daughters and sons-in-law Brenda and Rick Powell of Newton, and Carol Tanner-Thornton and Buck Thornton of Henrietta, N.C.; and son and daughter-in-law Danny R. and Oene Morgan of Simpson, La.
A June 1 memorial service was held at Mr. Morgan’s church by the Rev. Brant Hoots, and burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Mr. Morgan’s Sunday School class.
Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home served the family.

William T. Powell, Jr.
HICKORY – William Thomas Powell, Jr., 95, of Eighth Avenue Drive, NE, Hickory, died May 29 [2001] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 14, 1906 in Wilson, N.C., he was the son of the late William Thomas and Mamie Jenkins Powell, Sr.
Mr. Powell was a member of Episcopal Church of the Ascension and was retired from Liggett-Myers Tobacco Co. as a manager.
He was a mason and a Shriner.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Farmer Powell; sons William “Bill” Powell, III of Hickory, and Joe Powell of Rocky Mount, N.C.; grandsons Mark and Chris Powell of Hickory; great-granddaughter Katie Powell of Hickory; and brother Joe C. Powell of Little Rock, Ark.
A graveside memorial service was held June 3 at Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, N.C.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.

Linda C. Putnam
MAIDEN – Linda Lee Conard Putnam, 62, of East Main Street, Maiden, passed away May 30 [2001] at her residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1940 in Greene County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Charlie P. Conard and Mary Good Propst.
Mrs. Putnam was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witnesses Church.
Her husband, Jule Frank Putnam, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law Mary Sue and Charles Stidham of Denver, and Navada Marie Price and companion David Price of Maiden; granddaughters Stephanie Luann Christopher of Conover, and Carol Ann Brooks of Maiden; and great-grandchildren Julee Marie Stidham and Halen Lee Hoke.
A memorial service was held June 1 at Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness Church in Newton.
Burke Mortuary in Maiden served the family.

Ricky Reavis
CLAREMONT – Ricky Reavis, 48, of Circle Drive, Claremont, passed away unexpectedly May 30 [2001] at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Colo.
Born Feb. 14, 1954 in Catawba County, he was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Beard Rozzelle of Conover, and the late Hubert P. “Shorty” Reavis.
Mr. Reavis was a member of North Newton Baptist Church and was an electrician for Sieman Corporation.
In addition to his mother, survivors include daughter Rochelle Sain of Taylorsville; sisters Sherry R. Cline of Newton, Frances McCaslin of Dobson, N.C., and Judy Triggiano of Tampa, Fla.; and brother Richard D. Reavis of Newton.
The Rev. Lloyd King conducted June 3 services at Mr. Reavis’s church, and burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Dennis Campbell, Rick Beard, Loyd Whitmire, Eddie Coulbourn, Jeff Beard and Allen Whitmire.
Drum Funeral Home in Conover served the family.
Memorials may be made to American Liver Foundation, 1425 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, N.J., 07009; or to the University of Colorado Hospital, 4200 East Ninth Avenue, Denver, Colo., 80262.

Godfrey R. Shafto
SOUTH CAROLINA – Godfrey Richard Shafto, 98, a resident of the Seabrook, Hilton Head Island, S.C., died May 31 [2001].
He was born April 22, 1904 in Cliffwood, N.J.
Mr. Shafto was a pioneer in broadcasting in South Carolina.
He began his career in Columbia, as general manager of WIS and was a leading force in the growth and development of the station as it grew into Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation.
He became president of an organization that controlled six radio stations, three television stations and six cable television systems.
He was the first president of the South Carolina Broadcasters’ Association, a director of the National Association of Broadcasters, chairman of the Association’s Television Code Review Board and chairman of the NBC Stations Planning and Advisory Committee.
He was also the first president of the Broadcast Pioneers Educational Fund, Inc.
He was inducted into the S.C. Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1973, and served as a director to the Liberty Corporation since 1969.
As a result of his expertise, Mr. Shafto became a consultant with the Office of War Information and was a Naval consultant during WWII.
He represented the United States as a delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris in 1949.
He contributed generously of his time and resources to numerous civic, educational and humanitarian causes nationally and in Columbia, the Midlands, and Hilton Head Island.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Treva Hanson Shafto; his second wife, Elizabeth Jordan Shafto; sister Florence Shafto Wade; and brother Wesley Simes Shafto.
He is survived by a sister, Mary Shafto Rohr of Pascagoula, Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren, including niece Patricia Moss of Hickory, who is accepting condolences for the family.
A memorial service was held June 4 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island, and burial was June 5 in Trinity Church Cemetery in Columbia.
Island Funeral Home in Hilton Head, S.C., served the family.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Hilton Head; South Carolina Educational T.V.; or to the University of South Carolina College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Archie W. Shuford
HICKORY – Archie Whiting Shuford, 88, of Hickory, died May 29 [2001] at the Lutheran Home.
Born May 4, 1914 in Hickory, he was the son of the late James Campbell and Elva Crowell Shuford.
Mr. Shuford was a member of Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ, where he was a past deacon and Sunday School teacher, and also served in many other capacities.
He was a retired hosiery manufacturer, having served on the National Board of Hosiery Manufacturers.
A graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., he was also a 1936 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College, where he was on the track team and later served as president of the college’s Alumni Association.
He was a member of Hickory Rotary Club, where he had served as president, was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as Rotary District Governor in 1963-64.
He served as president of the Hickory Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of what is now the United Fund.
He was a former member of the Hickory Coffee Club and Lake Hickory Country Club.
A brother, James C. Shuford, Jr., also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Cline Shuford; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Al Spivey of Hickory, and Mary and Bob Singletary of Cambridge, Mass.; sons and daughter-in-law A. Whiting Shuford, Jr. of Asheville, and Henry and Mary Shuford of Hickory; granddaughters and their husbands Suzanne and Ty Brown of Kannapolis, Alice and Glen Hutto, Jr. of Hickory, Sara Jane Spivey of Washington, D.C., and Adrienne Shuford of Hickory; grandsons Archie Shuford, III and Henry Shuford of Hickory; great-granddaughter Claire Hutto of Hickory; step-great-granddaughter Summer Brown of Kannapolis; step-great-grandson Samuel Brown of Kannapolis; and sisters and brother-in-law Elva Schmulling of Hickory, Maude Lloyd of Greensboro, and Mildred and William Stronach of Lenoir.
A June 1 memorial service was conducted at Mr. Shuford’s church by the Revs. Robert M. Thompson and William Howell, and burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hickory Rotary Club and the Hickory Coffee Club.
Memorials may be made to Corinth Reformed UCC, 150 16th Avenue, NW, Hickory 28601; or to Davidson College.

Angel N. Shull
GRANITE FALLS – Angel Nichelle Shull, stillborn daughter of Chad M. Shull of Conover, and Heather D. Dula of Granite Falls, passed away May 29 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather Bobby Shull; maternal great-grandfathers Durine Dula and Albert Starnes; paternal great-grandparents Guy and Junie Baker and Zero and Helen Shull; and aunt Crystal Michelle Dula.
In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandparents Jeff and Pam Dula of Granite Falls; paternal grandmother Inez B. Shull of Conover; maternal great-grandmothers Willadean Dula of Granite Falls, and Barbara Edwards of Bethlehem; uncle Eugene Shull of Woodland Park, Colo.; and aunt Leslie Dula of Granite Falls.
A graveside service will be held today at 2 pm at Temple Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Granite Falls, with the Revs. Charles Murrell and Jeremy Emory officiating.
Drum Funeral Home in Conover is serving the family.

Essie T. Shull
HICKORY – Essie Thelma Shull, 76, of Second Avenue, SE, Hickory, died May 28 [2001] at Catawba Valley Medical Center following several years of declining health.
Born June 23, 1925 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Lewis and Anna Penola Smith Reese.
She was retired from Neuville Industries.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Woodrow Willie Shuff; daughters Helen Seagle and Margie Reese; and son Everett James Shull.
She is survived by daughters Sue Stroupe and Joyce Greene of Morganton, Louise Seagle of Valdese, and Judy Shull of Hickory; sons Willie and Forest Shull of Drexel; sisters Inez Cook of Hickory, and Clara Beard of Brookford; 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Kenneth Bright conducted graveside services May 31 at Burke Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Tim Reese, Wayne Reese, Todd Shull, Johnny Shull, Clint Shull, Ben Greene, Wesley Sain and Allen Seagle; and grandchildren were honorary pallbearers.
Hickory Funeral Home served the family.
