Nita R. Sigmon
NEWTON – Nita R. Sigmon, 78, of Brentwood Drive, Newton, passed away June 1 [2001] at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1923 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Guy Ritchie, Sr. and Mae Boyd Ritchie.
Mrs. Sigmon was a legal secretary and a member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Jesse C. Sigmon, Jr.; and brother Robert Guy Ritchie, Jr.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Sharon B. Sigmon and Rebekah and Roger Martin of Newton, and Miriam and Roy Hunt of Fort Mill, S.C.; and granddaughter Jessica Davis Hunt of Fort Mill, S.C.
Services were conducted June 4 at Mrs. Sigmon’s church by the Rev. Dr. Bill B. Mims, Jr. and the Rev. Ronnie Church, and burial followed in Eastview Cemetery in Newton.
Pallbearers were Gene Sigmon, Randy Isenhower, Kenny Goodson, Robert G. Ritchie, III, Nathan Poovey, Hugh Gaither and Eddie Haupt.
Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home served the family.

Dennis L. Starnes, Sr.
HICKORY – Dennis LeeRoy Starnes, Sr., 59, of 42nd Avenue Circle, NE, Hickory, died May 29 [2001] at Frye Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.
Born March 26, 1943 in Catawba County, he was the son of Eulalia Deal Starnes of Hickory, and the late Vance Starnes.
Mr. Starnes was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and was the owner and operator of Starnes Construction.
A graduate of St. Stephen's High School and CVCC, he also attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and was a member of the National Association of Homebuilders.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by fiancée Nancy Sessions of Hickory; former wife Doretta Sigmon of Hickory; son and daughter-in-law Dennis LeeRoy and Debbie Starnes, Jr. of Hickory; daughters and son-in-law Pamala Lenette Starnes of Hickory, and Tameletah and David Baxley of Holly Ridge, N.C.; granddaughters Sydney A. Starnes and Abigail G. Starnes of Hickory, and Christina M. Baxley of Holly Ridge; grandsons Logan M. Starnes and Corbin D. Starnes of Hickory; brother Art C. Starnes of Hickory; and sisters Jeanette Pappas of Hickory, and Peggy Putnam of Newton.
The Rev. David Guelzow conducted June 1 services at the Hickory Funeral Home Chapel, and burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Desola S. Stilwell
CONNELLY SPRINGS – Desola Starnes Stilwell, 89, of Sain Avenue, Connelly Springs, died May 29 [2001] at Morganton Long Term Care following a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 23, 1912 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Leatha Miller Starnes.
Mrs. Stilwell was a member of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church and was retired from Elliotts Hosiery Mill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Stilwell; son Luther Grant Stilwell; brothers Leonard, Glenn and Hubert Starnes; and stepson George Hildebran.
Survivors include daughter Magdelene Bowman of Conover; son Clyde Wayne Stilwell of Connelly Springs; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Gary Coble conducted June 1 services at Mrs. Stilwell’s church and burial was in Shoupes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Starnes, Ronald Bowman, Terry Gilliland, Darrell Freeman, Kendrick Starnes and Robin Stilwell.
Hickory Funeral Home served the family.

Dayton J. Wilson
HICKORY – Dayton Jack Wilson, 84, of Hickory, died June 2 [2001] at his residence.
Born April 16, 1918 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Pearl Green Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a member of Grace, Truth Missionary Baptist Church, where he was the oldest member, former Sunday School teacher, chairman of the deacon board and a trustee.
He was retired as a shoe cobbler and also from J.P. Stevens Co.
Also preceding him in death were son James (Jim) Wilson; grandson Jeff Wilson; granddaughter Valerie Wilson; and sister Betty Gouge.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Anna Cain Wilson; daughters and sons-in-law Pat and Claude Danner and Cathie and Eddie Johnson, all of Newton, and Sue and Jim Hobson of Bakersville; son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Sue Wilson of Hickory; daughter-in-law Cindy Wilson of Newton; brother Kepler Wilson of Hendersonville; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Services were conducted June 5 at Mr. Wilson’s church by the Revs. Ronnie Gouge, Danny Silvers and Howard Wilson, and burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roger Hobson, Ken Hobson, Tim Hobson, Rick Hayes, Mike Miller and Derek Brown; and honorary pallbearers were Carl Patton, Sherman Church, John Dempsey, Jessie Kannupp, John Blevins, Buddy Oliver, Jeff Wright, Jum Hobson, Eddie Johnson, Claude Danner and Andy Smith.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.

Ellen M. Yount
GRANITE FALLS – Ellen Maecill Yount, 76, formerly of Granite Falls, died June 3 [2001] at Hospice House of Catawba Valley.
Born April 9, 1926 in Dry Ponds, N.C., she was the daughter of the late David Monroe and Sarah Etta Bright Hilton.
Mrs. Yount was retired as the owner of Troydon Hosiery Mill and was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Granite Falls.
She was a member of the Hibriten Chapter #140 Order of Eastern Star and of Widowed Persons Organization.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Troy E. Yount; brother Dewey Helton; sisters Caddie Belle Lowman, Irene Young and Ethel Hamby; and grandchildren Dana Watkins and Tracey Marshall.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law David E. and Pamilla Yount; daughters and son-in-law Susan N. Yount of Granite Falls and Angela E. Yount and Bill Watkins of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; sister Coleen Hamby of Baton, N.C.; grandchildren Laura Watkins, Vicki Watkins, Sarah Watkins, Alannah Watkins, Tammy Yount, Tiffany Munday and Theron Marshall; and great-grandchild Karahgan Munday.
The Rev. Scott Bollinger will conduct 3 pm services today at Catawba Funerals and Cremations, and burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Margaret W. Brown
Margaret Weatherman Brown, 87, of Hickory, died Sept. 7 [2002] at the N.C. Lutheran Home in Hickory.
Born Dec. 5, 1914 in Winston-Salem, she was the daughter of the late Early I and Lenora Jane Weatherman.
Mrs. Brown was a member of First United Methodist Church and served her church in many areas and on many projects, including Vice-President and President of United Methodist Women; President and Secretary of her Sunday school class; Student Secretary of the local church and the Statesville District; Secretary and Chairman of Wesleyan Service Guild; Chairman of the Worship Commission; and MYF Counselor and Bible school teacher.
She was a faithful member of the choir for over 50 years and grew up singing with her father and sisters in Winston-Salem, at church services and revivals.
She worked at Katies in Hickory, and ran a men's/women's/children's hosiery shop during the Furniture Markets held in Hickory, at the Foundation Center and Hickory Home Furnishings Mart from the late 1950’s to 1984.
Mrs. Brown’s volunteer work included work in the schools her daughters attended; Red Cross Bloodmobile; Girl Scout Leader, Hickory Swim Team, started at the Community Center; Soup Kitchen; Meals on Wheels; Catawba Memorial Hospital; and Tutoring Program, for Ridgeview Schools.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband of Henry Wakefield Brown and a sister, Virginia Sams and a brother Bill Weatherman.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly B. Crews of Apex; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy B. Brown and Al Stivers of St. Paul, MN; a daughter and son-in-law Jane B. and Mike Tomberlin of Hickory; four sisters, Lucile Weatherman of Highpoint, Gladys Kiger of Sterling, VA, Louise Smith of Virginia Beach, VA, and Betty March of Winston-Salem; a brother, Earl Weatherman, Jr. of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Emily Lambert of Burlington, NC.
Grandchildren include Jean Klein, Cathy Van Liew, Sue Munnell, Steve Crews, Rebekah Stivers, Elizabeth Hall, Brent Tomberlin, Charles Tomerlin and James Tomberlin.
Great-grandchildren include Molly and Britt Munnell, Joshua and Nicole Van Liew and Colin Crews.
The Rev. George Freeman conducted Sept. 10 memorial services at Mrs. Brown’s church, and burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home served the family.
