Minnie Belle B. Bumgarner
Minnie Belle Benfield Bumgarner, 84, of Hickory, died Sept. 7 [2002] at her residence, following a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 9, 1918 in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Sardis and Alma Fox Benfield.
Mrs. Bumgarner was a member of Gateway Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bumgarner was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Wesley Bumgarner; two daughters, Norma Belle and Paula Marvelle Bumgarner; two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Lowell Baker of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law Ronald Wesley Bumgarner and Ann of Gainesville, FL; a granddaughter and husband of Hildebran; a granddaughter and husband of Tina Bumgarner English and Pete of Gainesville, FL; a granddaughter and husband CheriAnn Bumgarner Peterson and Bill of Gainesville, Fl; a grandson, Jason Lowell Baker of Charlotte; six great-grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Mitchell, of Hickory.
Rev. Stan Frye and Rev. Mike McKinney conducted Sept. 9 services at Mrs. Bumgarner’s church.
Burial followed in Winklers Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Katherine H. Caldwell
Katherine Herman Caldwell, 96, of the Abernethy Center in Newton, formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 7 [2002] at the Abernethy Center.
Born Sept. 7, she was the daughter of the late James Lawrence and Eddie Coulter Herman.
She was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte, and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Lowell L. Caldwell, a brother and four sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lowell H. and Iris Caldwell of Blowing Rock; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Glenn Keever of Raleigh, Dotty and Bob Blake of Gastonia, and Peggy and Gary Williams of Rock Hill, SC; two sisters, Lucile Herman Harris of Newton, and Sarah Herman Rhodes of Newton; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Al Mullen conducted Sept. 9 memorial services at the Spirit Place in the Abernethy Center.
Burial was at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.

Virginia W. Campbell
Virginia Wright Campbell, 79, of the Heritage Village in Newton, died Sept. 7 [2002] at the Brian Center East.
Born Sept. 15, 1922 in Wythe County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Brady and Della Catherine Rosenbalm Wright.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Akers Campbell, Sr; a son, Rex Stanley Akers and a brother, Butch Wright.
Survivors include five sons: Doug Akers and his wife, Thelma of Newton; Edgar Akers, Jr. of Hickory; Claude Akers of Buckner, NC; Billy Joe Campbell of Asheboro; Johnny Campbell of Asheboro; six daughters: Mary Catherine and her husband, Billy Nance of Gibsonville; Evelyn Blizzard of Elreno, OK; Rebecca Patterson and her husband, Neal Patterson of Claremont; Diane Campbell of Asheville; Teresa Campbell of Charlotte; Juanita Campbell of Highpoint; seven brothers, Rex Wright, Ray Wright, Ronnie Wright and Donnie Wright of Greensboro; Jackie Wright of Richmond, VA; and George Wright and Albert Wright of Portland, OR; a sister, Willie Mae Fisher of Greensboro, and a number of grandchildren.

John C. Chaney
John Clayton “J.C.” Chaney, 10-week-old son of John and Amanda Bryant Chaney of Conover, died Sept. 3 [2002] at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born June 24, 2002 in Catawba County, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Brenda Bryant.
In addition to his parents survivors include a sister, Amber Allison of the home; two brothers, Wayne Richardson of Lincolnton, and Sean Lambert, Jr. of the home; and paternal grandparents Clayton And Angela Smeal of Lusby, MD, and Teresa Smeal of Elizabethtown, PA.
Rev. Bobby Langston conducted Sept. 6 services at the Fairgrove Baptist Church.
Burial was Sept. 8 in the Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dunkirk, MD.

Richard D. Clark
Richard Dwane Clark, 73, died Aug. 28 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 4, 1929 in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Raymond D. and Lila Ray Rozzel Clark.
Having served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S. Fargo, he attended Clevenger Business College in Hickory, and Radio and TV Technical College in Baltimore, MD.
He worked for the Bendix Corporation in Baltimore, and Superior Cable Corporation in Quality Control.
He retired from Shurtape Technologies.
A member of Sandy Ridge Wesleyan Church, he served as Treasurer and on the Local Church Board.
He was a member of the St. Stephens Optimist Club for 10 years and coached Little League Baseball.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Clark, Jr., Burl Clark, Howard Clark, and James Clark.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lane Clark, two sisters, Peggy C. Beam of Conover; and Betty C. Parker of Hildebran, and many nieces and nephews.
Rec. Scott Howard and Rev. Eric Lane conducted Aug. 31 services at Mr. Clark’s church.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Max Richards, James Cannon, Darrell Wise, Todd Lane, Scott Beam and Kyle Lane.
Honorary Pallbearers were Dean Caldwell, Maurice Richards, Lester Dellinger, Jim Huffman, Leonard Wise, Doyle Carter and James R. Johnson.
Military Services were conducted by American Legion Post 48 of Hickory.

Lynda T. Day
Lynda Tyler Day, 62, of Newton, died Sept. 8 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1940 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Joshua M. and Bernice Phelps Tyler.
Mrs. Day was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served as the first organist as well as a Sunday school teacher and Bible school teacher. .
She was employed by Newton-Conover City Schools for 28 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas “Tommy” Day.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy and Vic Glenn of Hickory, and Patti and Frank Harris of St. Louis, MO; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Teri Day of Thomasville, N.C. and Robert and Lea Day of Newton; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ida Day of Hickory; sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Carol and Dr. Carter Sinclair of Hickory; brothers-in-law Allen Day and Jerry Day; sister-in-law Donna Buff; seven grandchildren, Lauren Glenn, Katherine Glenn, Glen Harris, Jessica Harris, Tommy Day, Nathan Day, and Alyson Day; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Rev. Fred Thompson and Rev. Randy Cowan conducted Sept. 11 services at Mrs. Day’s church.
Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery.

Bradley S. Dills
Bradley Shawn Dills, 6, of Hickory, died Sept. 8 [2002], from accidental drowning.
Born Dec. 6, 1995, in Catawba County, he was the son of Wanda Hall Dills of Hickory, and the late Robert Eugene Dills.
He was a kindergarten student at Bethlehem Elementary School.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by maternal great-grandmothers Lottie Lail and Clara Hall, paternal grandfather Jerry Clain Dills; two uncles, Danny Dills and Gilbert Dills; two great-aunts, Frances Smith and Carolyn Shook; and two great-uncles, Dean Hall and Lee Teague.
Survivors include his mother Wanda Hall Dills of the home; a brother Dale Hall of the home; a sister Christina Dills, of Hickory; maternal grandparents Blain and Ruby Hall of Bethlehem; paternal grandmother Fannie Dills of Catawba; maternal great-grandfathers Woodrow Lail of Conover and George Hall; special cousin, Chloe Hall of Bethlehem; maternal aunts Rita Hall of Conover, and Lisa Hall of Bethlehem; maternal uncle Randy Hall of Bethlehem; paternal aunts Joan Dills, Joyce Dills, Darlene Drum, Wilma (Dusty) Hardwick of Hickory; and a number of cousins and great-aunts and uncles.

Helen Comeau Duclos, 78, of Hickory, died Sept. 5 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Apr. 16, 1924 in Cohoes, New York, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Louis Comeau and Katherine O’Brien Comeau.
Mrs. Duclos was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and a member of the Supreme Timers and the Bible Study Group at her church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Eugene Comeau.
Surviviors include her husband, Donald A. Duclos of the Hickory; a daughter Katherine Marks of Hickory; two daughters and sons-in-laws Jo-Ann (Mrs. Glen) Davis of Plano, N.C., and Gene Louise (Mrs. Ralph) Scalvini of Concord; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald A. Norman Grey Eddy, 78, of Hickory, died Aug. 25 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1923 in Bates County, Missouri, he was the son of the late Clifford William Eddy and Edith Gench Eddy Coop.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hortense Mitchell Eddy.
He was employed by Boise Cascade as a General Plant Manager.

He was an avid golfer and he also served in the U.S. Military.
