Brenda C. Moore
Brenda C. Moore, 50, of Maiden, died Sept. 4 [2002] at her residence.
Born Dec. 9, 1951 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of John Lewis and Willow Allen Caldwell.
She was a substitute teacher and office manager for Family Business.
She was active in Redemption World Outreach Center in Greenville, SC.
She was preceded in death by her father John Lewis Caldwell.
Survivors include her husband, Monty Moore; mother, Willow Allen Caldwell of Maiden; one son, Devin S. Moore of Statesville; one daughter, Danielle M. Figueroa of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren, Zackary, Abigail, Emily, Jayden and Nevan.
Apostle Ron Carpenter, Jr. conducted Sept. 7 at Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church in Maiden.
Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.

Albert P. Moose
Albert P. Moose, 87, of Conover, died Sept. 7 [2002] at the Abernethy Center in Newton.
Born Aug. 15, 1915 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Flora Travis Moose.
He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Newton, and a retired employee of Bassett Furniture in Newton.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater, where he received a Silver Star for his service.
He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, American Legion Post 1981, and the VFW-Donald Landord Drum Post 5305.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd L. Moose and Millard “Jack” Moose.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Huffman Moose; son and daughter-in-law Randall and Liz Moose of Newton; daughter and son-in-law, Judy Little and Jerry McMurry of Lincolnton; two brothers, George Moose of Conover, and Charles Moose of Newton; two sisters, Lorene Yount of Claremont, and Josephine Cansler of Conover; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Rev. Ralph A. Abernethy, III and Rev. Richard Mazak conducted Sept. 9 services at Mr. Moose’s church.
Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post 16.
Drum Funeral Home in Conover served the family.

Eugene Ray
Eugene “Sammy” Dexter Ray, 84, of Hickory, died Sept. 4 [2002] at his residence.
Born Feb. 1, 1918, in Watauga County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Minnie Carroll Ray.
He was a retired electrician.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn E. Ray; four brothers, Clyde, Clifford, Rhonda, and D.O. Ray; and a sister, Treva Coonce.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Belle Miller Ray, Hickory; a son, Johnny Ray, Boone; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Rev. Homer Greene conducted Sept. 7 services at Catawba Funerals and Cremations.

Mildred C. Seagle
Mildred Christine Cooke Carroll Seagle, 74, of Lenoir, died Sept. 8 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born April 8, 1928 in Cairo, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Cecil C. and Onita Cox Cooke.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Regina Gonzales of Lincolnton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mildred Kay Main of Lenoir, and Ann Carroll Manson and Al Manson of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren Frank and Sharon Raines, Ronda and James Edwards of Lenoir, Robert and Connie Powell of Hickory, Anita Owens of Taylorsville, Star and Butch Crawford of Spindale, and Jennifer and Anthony Gonzales of Maiden; 12 great-grandchildren, Shane, Coty and Josh Bumgarner, Amber Raines, Danielle and Jermey Edwards, Gavin, Anslie and Terrance Owens, Haley and Austin Crawford and Shelby R. Price.
A graveside service was held Sept. 11 at Brookford Cemetery.
Doris E. Shinn
Doris Eleanor Coffey Shinn, 62, of Connelly Springs, died Sept. 7 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 5, 1940 in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Milton and Willie Mae Fulbright Coffey.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Billy A. Coffey, Benny W. Coffey and Ronald G. Coffey.
She worked at Shuford Mills.
Survivors include her husband Sherman William Shinn of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Kim Coffey and Terry Coffey, all of Granite Falls; a daughter, Stacey Simmons of Granite Falls; two stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Kenneth W. and Patricia Shinn of Lenoir, and Darren Shinn of Bethlehem; two stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Cathy L. Shinn and husband Scott of Granite Falls, and Deborah A. Ward of Hickory; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Paul “Butch” Milton Coffey, Jr. and Barry and Ann Coffey, all of Granite Falls, Rick and Kay Coffey of Conover, and Dan Coffey of Youngstown, Ohio; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Trudy and Leonard White of Granite Falls, and Tommy Jean and Don Wagner of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was Sept. 10 at Catawba Funerals & Cremations with Rev. Kevin Keffer officiating.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Kenny Shinn, Josh Shinn, Bryan Ward, Kelly Ward, Willie Street and Scotty White.
Clyde E. Starnes, Jr.
Clyde Emit Starnes, Jr., 46, of Vale, died Sept. 8 [2002] at Cherokee Indian Hospital in Cherokee, N.C.
Born July 19, 1956 in Catawba County, he was the son of Clyde E. Starnes, Sr. of Hickory, and the late Thelma Knox Starnes.
He was a member of Royal Chapel Church of God and owner of C-S Mart.
He served in the Armed Forces.
In addition to his father and stepmother, Colleen Starnes of Hickory, survivors include his wife Donna Frederick Starnes of the home; two sons, Dylan Starnes of Vale, and Bryan Savage of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandsons, Dakota Spicer of Vale, and Brandon and Tyson Savage, both of Tucson, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Kailee Savage of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Delores Starnes of Buffalo, S.C.; and a brother, Jonathan Starnes of Hickory.
The funeral service was Sept. 11 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Petty officiating.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.

Ruth T. Stracke
Ruth Torres Stracke, 84, of 23rd St., NW, Hickory died Sept. 3 [2002] at her residence after a brief illness.
Born May 3, 1918 in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mae Torres.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Gustave Nis Stracke, a daughter, Dolores Stracke Ivey and a grandson, Chad Ivey.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Richard and Suzan Stracke of Fairfield, Ohio; three grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Charles “Chip” H. and Jennifer Ivey of Granite Falls, Richard G. Stracke, II of Akron, Ohio, and Robert Chad Stracke of Fairfield, Ohio; two great-granddaughters, Jena and Madison Ivey, both of Granite Falls.
The memorial service was Sept. 7 at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel and conducted by Chuck Ivey.
Entombment was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Nolene S. Teague
Nolene St. Clair Teague, 79, of Hickory, died Sept. 9 [2002] at N.C. Lutheran Home.
Born April 15, 1923 in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Artie Davis St. Clair.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Teague and by three brothers, James, Charlie and Ed St. Clair.
She was a life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Melissa Teague of Hickory; granddaughter Sara Teague of Hickory; brother Ernest St. Clair of Taylorsville; two sisters-in-law, Dee St. Clair of Oregon, and Lucille Cordelle of Hickory; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Perry and Tressie Jarrett and Bill Michael, all of Hickory.
The funeral service was Sept. 11 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Bert Dixon officiating.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Howard L. Ward, Sr.
Howard Louis Egnor Ward, Sr., 58, of 13th St., SE, Hickory, died Sept. 8 [2002] at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born July 1, 1944 in Delaware County, N.Y., he was the son of the late Luke Egnor and Mary Wyman Degasta.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Christina Ward and Deborah Ward and stepfather Frances J. Ward.
He was self-employed as a contractor and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife Mary Gouthremont Ward of Sidney, N.Y.; four sons, Tad Ward Moore of Tonawanda, N.Y., William Ward of Granite Falls, and Howard L. Ward, Jr. and Clarence Ward, both of Hickory; five brothers, Luke Egnor of Phoenix, Richard Ward of Sidney, N.Y., William Egnor of New York, Mikey Ward of Columbia, S.C., and Aaron Ward of Maiden; four sisters, Leah Archer of Sidney, N.Y., Beatrice Kane of Unadilla, N.Y., Edna Helms of Endicott, N.Y., and Jennifer Ward of California; eight grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle and cousins.
A memorial service was held Sept. 11 with Rev. Darrell Mull officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in New York.
