Wayne G. White
Wayne Gilbert White, 64, of North Caldwell Avenue, Newton, died Sept. 5 [2002] at Conover Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1937 in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Moton and Grace Short White.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne White, a sister Ailene Towery, and three brothers, Paul White, James White and Cly White.
He was retired from the Newton Police Department as a lieutenant after 15 years of service and was a member of East First Street Baptist Church in Newton.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years Lois Kanupp White of the home; three daughters, Vickie Perkins and Sandra Hall, both of Newton, Katherine White of Mt. View; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Lee and Amy White of Newton, and Jeffery Wayne and Janet White of Grover; a sister, Nadine Saunders of Morganton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Earl and Norma White of Hickory, and Hugh White of Morganton; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sept. 8 at Drum Funeral Home Chapel in Conover, with Revs. Fred Thompson and Henry Payne officiating.
Burial was in Eastview Cemetery.
The Newton Police Department served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
Drum Funeral Home in Conover, was in charge of arrangements.

James Blackburn, Jr.
James Blackburn, Jr., 74, died Nov. 20 [2002] at Hospice of Catawba Valley.
Born Sept. 12, 1928 in Wilkes County, he was the son of the late James Blackburn, Sr. and Jessie Bell Blackburn.
He was an electronic engineer with the FAA and a member of First Christian Church of Newton.
He was a Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #16 of Newton, and a member of 40/8 of Newton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Judy Blackburn.
Survivors include his wife Flossie Hatley Blackburn of the home; sons James “Doug” Douglas Blackburn of Newton, David Alan Blackburn of Hays, N.C., Rick Wallace of Newton and Bob Hatley of Claremont; daughters Deborah Lynn Blackburn of Pfaggtown, Sandy Wilfong of Newton, Pam Smith of Vale, Kay Salyers of Newton and Dona Turner of Newton; twenty-one grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 23 at Burke Mortuary with Rev. Gary Patterson officiating.
Burial followed in Conover City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.

Fred R. Bowen
Fred Randall Bowen, 69, died Nov. 20 [2002] at his residence.
Born June 22, 1933 in Catawba County he was the son of Thomas Marshall and Myrtle Bowen.
Bowen was a retired construction worker.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Mary H. Bowen of the home; son Roger Bowen of Florida; daughter Brenda Gail Bowen of Florida; brothers Jimmy Bowen, Hubert Bowen and Jack Bowen all of Hickory; sister Della Frye of Hickory.
Graveside services were held Nov. 22 at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Homer F. Greene officiating.
Hickory Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charles J. Burgess
Charles “Charlie” J. Burgess, 76, died Nov. 19 [2002].
Born Aug. 3, 1926 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Paul J. Burgess and Juanita Deal Burgess.
The owner of Burgess Transport, Inc. in Charlotte, he held numerous industry and civic posts such as American Trucking Association, Florida Trucking Association, North and South Carolina Trucking Association as well as a member of the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle.
His passions were his work with various organizations such as the Sword of the Lord, Peace for Israel, Friends of Israel, Wings of Freedom as well as his passion for being a pilot.
He was a member of Providence Road Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents a brother Glenn Burgess preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of fifty one years, Anne Burgess of the home; daughters Pam Burgess of Charlotte, Peggy Burgess of Atlanta; sons Robert Burgess and wife Monica of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Bill Burgess of Hollywood, Florida; grandsons Jeremy Dalton of Murphy, and Chris Burgess of Alpharetta, Georgia.
Services were held Nov. 21 at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, with Rev. Charles Worley officiating.
A graveside service was held Nov. 22.
Memorials may be made to Providence Road Baptist Church, Providence Road, Maiden, and N.C.
Burke Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy H. Edwards
Dorothy Hursey Edwards, 79, died Nov. 19 [2002] at Abernathy Retirement Center following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born Sept. 5, 1923 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late William Durant Hursey and Irma Yount Hursey.
She and her late husband owned and operated Newton Furniture Store, Inc.
She was also involved in various volunteer activities with senior adults and people who were in need.
The focus of her life was her relationship with the Lord and with her family.
She was involved in various leadership opportunities with Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Currently she was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newton.
She enjoyed traveling around the world and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Her husband Rupert Gantt Edwards, sister Claudine Hursey and brothers Norman Hursey and William Durant Hursey, Jr, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons Alan Gantt Edward of Newton, and Donald Edward of Shurman Oaks, California; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 22 at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton, with Rev. Daniel G. Martin and Dr. Boyce Huffsteler officiating.
Burial was in Bethlehem United Methodist church cemetery in Claremont.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Western N.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 1066, Asheville, N.C. 28802.
Burke Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Edward B. Hedrick
Edward “Eddie” Baxter Hedrick, 38, died Nov. 21 [2002].
Born July 16, 1964 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late John Theodore Hedrick and Rose Blanche Moser Hedrick.
He was formerly employed at Pizza Hut.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother James Hedrick.
Survivors include four sisters Gladys Hall of Newton, Lena Hedrick of Newton, Lena “Sis” Willis of Maiden, and Peggy Wise of Lincolnton.; five brothers Russell Hedrick of Newton, Leroy Hedrick of Newton, David Hedrick of Newton, Guy Hedrick of Maiden, and Ray Hedrick of Maiden; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 24 at Drum Funeral Home Chapel.
Rev. Richard Kale officiated and burial followed in Eastview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Hall, Delbert Hall, Tommy Wise, Jr., Gary Reynolds, David Hedrick, Mark Stalnaker, Brian Smith and John Hardy.
Drum Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

David R. Kanipe
David Rocklyn “Rocky” Kanipe, 53, died Nov. 20 [2002] at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1949 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Byrl E. and Louise Smith Kanipe.
He was employed by Interstate Foam and was a U.S. Army veteran.
A brother Jerry W. Kanipe preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife Faye Ann McLaughlin Kanipe of the home; three sons, Allen Shook of Claremont, Joey Shook and Tommy Shook of Newton; sister and brother-in-law Rita and Johnny Williams of Newton; sister-in-law Bessie B. Kanipe of Newton; five nieces and nephews Natalie Williams, Kathy Davis, Diane K. Cushing, Kenneth Kanipe and Jeffrey Kanipe.
Services were held Nov. 23 at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
Rev. Ronnie L. Church officiated and burial was in Eastview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Kanipe, Jeffrey Kanipe, Jeff Davis, John Cushing, Jeremy Cushing and Larry Annas.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Daisy C. Proctor
Daisy Carswell Proctor, 78, died Nov. 21 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born June 26, 1924 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Nancy Carswell.
Proctor was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dwight J. Proctor; sister Marie Buchanan; three brothers Roy Carswell, Ed Carswell and Jesse Carswell.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Butch Lippard of Hickory; daughter Phyllis Proctor of Hickory; granddaughter Brooke Lippard of Hickory; grandson Chase Lippard of Hickory; sister Betty Abernethy of Morganton; brothers Wilson Carswell, Joe Carswell and Sherrell Carswell of Morganton.
Services were held Nov. 23 at Augustana Lutheran Church.
Rev. Delbert R. Roth officiated and burial was in the church cemetery.

Jennifer L. Rowe
Jennifer Lassena Rowe, 31, died Nov. 11 [2002] at N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Born March 13, 1971, she was the daughter of Bruce and Jan Spurlock Ketcham and Dennis and Margie Rowe.
She was a graduate of Hickory High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in human and community services at Lenoir-Rhyne College.
She was in Sigma Kappa sorority.
She was active at Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ.
She taught Sunday school and kept the nursery.
She was a Hospice volunteer and taught pre-school at First Presbyterian Church.
Jennifer was waiting for a multi-organ transplant.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Albert and Lassena Spurlock.
Survivors include her step-father and mother Bruce and Jan Spurlock Ketcham of Hampstead, N.C.; father and step-mother Dennis and Margie Rowe of Vale; brother Devin Clark Rowe of Hickory; sister Taylor Spurlock Ketcham of Hampstead; grandfather Herbert Ketcham of Hampstead; grandparents Howard and Tommie Rowe of Hickory; several aunts and uncles.
A memorial service was held Nov. 14 at Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ.
Rev. Robert Thompson and Rev. Bill Howell officiated.

Margie S. Turner
Margie Sigmon Turner, 77, died Nov. 18 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born March 20, 1925 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late B.A. and Edith Smyre Turner.
She was retired from New Sock Co. and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband Donald Lee Turner of the home; half-brother Carl Sigmon of Catawba; brother Claude Sigmon of Catawba; brother-in-law Charles Ray Turner of Connelly Springs; brother-in-law J.R. Turner of Hickory.
Services were held Nov. 20 at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bert Dixon officiating.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Hickory Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
