Robert Young
Robert “Bobby” Young, 42, died Nov. 19 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1960 in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Robert and Carmen Bezada Young.
Survivors include four sisters Laura Pritchard of Lenoir; Deborah Cook of Taylorsville; Lisa Scott of Hickory, and Diane Cruz of Morganton.
Services were held Nov. 21 at the Salvation Army in Lenoir, with Captains Timothy Bartram and Garnett Bartram officiating.
Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Elizabeth H. Bradberry
Elizabeth Hollifield Bradberry, 80 died Nov. 27 [2002] at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1922 in Little Switzerland, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ron and Minda Elliott Hollifield.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Fairgrove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Watkins C. Bradberry and a son Charles A. “Chuck” Bradberry.
Survivors include two sons Watkins C. Bradberry of Catawba, and Kenneth Bradberry of Conover; one daughter Vicki Bradberry Abee of Hickory; one brother Linzie Hollifield of Cullowee; one sister Lessie Williams of Marion; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were Nov. 30 at Fairgrove Baptist Church.
Rev. Bobby Langston officiated with burial in Catawba Memorial Park.

Arnold G. Brandon, Sr.
Arnold “Arnie” Gwynn Brandon, Sr., 56, died Dec. 1 [2002] at his residence.
Born July 27, 1946 in Caswell County, he was the son of the late Robert Allen and Annie Bet Snow Brandon.
He attended Center United Methodist Church in Catawba, where he was active in the Methodist Men’s Group.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Sarah Watlington and Janie Brandon; three brothers Henry Brandon, William Brandon and Edward Brandon.
Survivors include his wife, Brownye C. Brandon of the home; daughters and sons-in-law Dawn and Jerry Hensley of Catawba, and Ginnye A. Brandon of Catawba; son and daughter-in-law Arnold Gwynn, Jr. and Kitty Brandon of Burlington; grandchildren Austin and Alex Brandon of Burlington, Trey Hensley of Catawba; Savannah Hensley of Catawba; mother-in-law Virginia Coward of the home; sister Mrs. Sally Shelton of Danville, Virginia; brother Hezekiah Brandon of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 4 at the Center United Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba.

Beulah K. Benfield
Beulah Inez Kanipe Benfield, 79, died Nov. 30 [2002] at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Mar. 21, 1923 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Ed Kanipe and Ester Lafone Kanipe.
She was retired from Shuford Mills and a member of First Assembly Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Arcus Acoda Benfield and one sister Elizabeth Craig Marsh.
Survivors include a sons Ronald Benfield of Hickory, and Autry Dan Benfield of Hickory; granddaughter and husband Dawn and William Mull of Maiden; grandson Jesse D. Benfield of Nashville; great-grandsons Joseph and Andrew Mull of Maiden; great-granddaughter Lindsey Mull of Maiden; granddaughters Diana Benfield Beebe and Angela Benfield of Hickory; grandson Charlie Benfield of Hickory.
Graveside rites were held Dec. 2 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Homer Greene officiating.

Pete T. Bowman
Pete T. Bowman, 92, died Nov. 30 [2002] at his residence.
Born June 2, 1910 in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Calvin and Matilda Miller Bowman.
He was retired from Clayton Marcus and was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Sherry Bowman, four sisters Carrie Hickey, Amanda Hefner, Alice Isenhour and Edna Bowman; five brothers Gilbert Bowman, Augustus Bowman, John Bowman, Vernace Bowman and Charles Bowman.
Survivors include his wife Lottie Elizabeth Bowman of the home; daughters Mrs. Arnold (Pauline) Richey of Bethlehem, Mrs. Harold Lou Ann) Frye of Taylorsville, Mrs. Conley (Glenda) Sipe of Taylorsville; sons Ted Bowman of Bethlehem, Linzey Bowman of Taylorsville, and Wayne Bowman of Bethlehem; five grandsons Chris Richey, Bradley Richey, Eric Frye, Kevin Sipe and Kendall Sipe; eight granddaughters Cindy Maese, Roxanne Buff, Crystal Clippard, Julia Rhyne Shelly Chapman, Mitizi Farrens, Jill Peek and Christie Alley; nine great-grandsons Joey richey, Jamie Richey, Kyle Richey, Morgan London, Jacob Frye, Mason Frye, Keaton Peek, Karter Peek and Kyler Peek; seven great-granddaughters Caroline Clippard, Porter Maese, Andrea Rhyne, Brianna Rhyne, Candy Sprinkle, Kaitlyn Sipe and Kenna Sipe; one great-great-grandson Logan Sprinkle; sister Susie Bowman.
Services were held Dec. 3 at Shiloh Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Mattie H. Clevenger
Mattie Huffman Clevenger, 81, died Nov. 27 [2002] at Valdese General Hospital.
Born April 15, 1921 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Columbus Hayes and Ida Burns Huffman .
He was retired from the hosiery industry,
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Hugh Clevenger, a son Ernest Clevenger and a daughter Carolyn Perkins; brothers Eli Huffman, Ike Huffman, Bill Huffman and Ray Huffman; sisters Bertha Rogers, Lillie Icard, Minnie Wright and Pearl Ingle.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Thomas Houston of Hildebran; brother and sister-in-law John and Grace Huffman of Baton; grandsons Chad Houston of Hildebran, Dwayne Perkins of Hildebran, and Timothy Perkins of Hildebran; granddaughter Kim Houston of Hildebran; niece Linda Faye Hersom of Morganton; and several other nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 30 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Christine S. Fox
Christine Sparks Fox, 95, died Nov. 27 [2002] at Abernethy Center United Church Retirement Homes in Newton, where she had been a resident for more than 11 years.
Born April 22, 1907 in Morganton, she was the daughter of the late James W. Sparks and Margaret Hallyburton Sparks.
She was on the nursing staff of the former Catawba General Hospital in Newton, for many years.
She had also been a nurse at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, and in Valdese, and at a hospital in Asheboro, and in medical offices in Atlanta, and in Valdese.
She was a charter member of the Catawba Memorial Hospital Auxiliary when it was established in 1968 and was honored by the medical facility for having been a volunteer for 30 years.
Mrs. Fox had also been a volunteer with the local Red Cross blood collection program.
A member of the Ransom-Sherrill Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Catawba County Historical Association, she was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Newton.
Mrs. Fox had been a donor to the Catawba Medical Foundation to benefit the county-owned hospital and had donated family heirlooms to the Catawba County Museum of History.
Mrs. Fox moved to the retirement village at Abernethy Center in April 1991 following the death of her husband.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Newton realtor Ralph T. Fox and four sisters and a grandson.
Survivors include a son John Courtney of Columbia, S.C., two granddaughters Constance Courtney and Kelly Courtney; great-grandson Aaron Courtney and a niece Margaret McBride of Atlanta Georgia.
A memorial service was conducted Dec. 4 at Spirit Place at Abernethy Center.
Rev. Randy Cowan of Calvary Baptist Church and the Rev. Fred Thompson officiated.

Donald R. Fuller, Sr.
Donald Ray Fuller, Sr., 80, died Nov. 24 [2002] at Duke University Medical Center.
He was a resident of Lumberton, N.C.
Survivors include sons Donald R. Fuller, Jr. and Sue Nell of Hickory, and Stephen A. Fuller and Janet Fuller of Savannah, Georgia; sister Mary Louise Fuller Berkeley of Fairfax, Va.; and one granddaughter Carson Elizabeth Fuller of Hickory.
Services were held Nov. 26 at First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton, with burial in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Shirley D. Goble
Shirley Dover Goble, 42, died Nov. 28 [2002] at her residence.
Born Jan. 13 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of William Floyd Dover of Pickens, SC, and the late Charlene Hubbard Dover.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother she was preceded in death by a daughter Beverly Higgs and a sister Julie Dover.
Survivors include her father and stepmother William Floyd and Ruby Dover of Pickens, SC; daughter Kimberly Joan Banner of Kentucky; fiancé Bobby Young; sisters Janet Estes of Morganton, Patricia Workman of Hickory, Debra Carpenter of Newton, Joyce Day of Hickory, and Tammy Greenard of Hickory; brother Eddie D. Dover of Newton.
Services were held Dec. 1 at Drum Funeral Home Chapel.
Rev. Mike McKinney officiated and burial followed in the Eastview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Terry Carpenter, Wayne Day, Aaron Young, Delano Young, Michael Young and Verlin Estes.
