Larson Moore: A life fully lived
Imagine Larson Hughes Moore’s shock when he found out Hickory Fire Education Coordinator Teri Rhodes didn’t have a joke ready and she was about to speak to the Rotary Club!
Quickly, he told her one, to save her from the situation.
Rhodes and other firefighters gathered around a table at the main fire station on Tuesday afternoon, laughing and remembering the man who worked so long for the fire department and the city.
The man who always had a joke ready and was always ready to befriend a new person.
Moore, 79, died Nov. 28 at Frye Regional Medical Center, but is still warmly remembered by those who knew him.
Ted Beshears, his best friend and a pallbearer at his funeral, knew Moore for about 45 years and remembers him as a friendly person with an outgoing personality.
“More than any other person, I saw that he liked to help people,” Beshears said.
Moore would help people in his neighborhood and those who were disadvantaged, and he tried to be fair to everyone, Beshears said.
But, he also enjoyed himself.
“He enjoyed living life more than anyone I ever saw,” Beshears said.
That showed in his playing golf, and in his later years, working with computers.
But, it also showed in his personality – the fact that he always had a joke ready and a quick wit, said Deputy Fire Chief Fred Hollar, who worked with Moore while he was the fire chief.
Moore, who had joined the Hickory Fire Department in 1953, retired in 1987, after serving 11 years as chief.
Even while Moore was sick and carrying around an oxygen tank, the humor never left him, Hollar said.
He recalled one day when he, Moore and others from the fire department went out to lunch and the waitress accidentally kicked the oxygen tank.
“'It’s OK, I throw it around', he told her,” said Hollar.
It was just like Moore to try to make everyone feel at ease.
“He was always extremely nice and always had time to speak to you,” said firefighter Bobby Rudisill.
“He always had a story,” added Fire Chief Thomas Alexander.
“Always,” agreed Hollar.
“He was the Will Rogers of the Fire Department,” Alexander joked.
But, afterward, everyone was quiet for a while, remembering their own stories of Moore.
His death was difficult because of the family-type relationship members of the Hickory Fire Department share with one another, Alexander said.
“I worked 30 years with another department,” he said.
“When people there retired, you didn’t see them again. This is truly more of a family situation.”
Though Moore hadn’t worked at the fire department since the 1980s, he continued to visit and to be an active part of the community.
“He stayed involved,” said Battalion Chief Rick Davis.
While at the Hickory Fire Department, Moore organized the fire prevention bureau, implemented Hickory’s first fire code and served as the city’s arson investigator.
After retirement, he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1988 by then-Gov. James G. Martin.
The award is presented to individuals who have a proven record of service to the state and is among the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina.
In the 1990s, he decided to run for office and served on Hickory City Council as a Ward 3 representative from 1991-98.
His service to the community dates back much further, though.
Moore served on the board of the American Red Cross in the 1960s and taught first aid.
He also helped Boy Scouts earn their first aid and firemanship merit badges.
A World War II veteran, Moore served in the 357th anti-aircraft artillery battalion as a sergeant and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
In the military, he earned an EAME Service Medal with two bronze stars, a good conduct medal and a WWII Victory Medal.
Moore was born March 7, 1923 in Henderson to the late Nannie and Larson Moore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Smith Moore of Lenoir, who died in 1994; by an identical twin brother, Carson; by brothers Max and Tommy; and sister Nelly Gray.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Tony and Beverly Moore of Newton; granddaughter and grandson-in-law Meredith and Mark Haynes of Bethlehem; granddaughter Elizabeth Moore of Newton; two sisters, Maxine, who lives in Henderson, and Loraine, who lives in Alabama; and companion Mary Emma Smith of Hickory.
He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church on Main Avenue Drive and 17th Street, NW, where memorials may be sent.
Memorials may also be made to the Larson H. Moore scholarship fund at Lenoir-Rhyne College.
He was also a member of the N.C. Fire Chiefs Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Catawba Valley Golden “K” Kiwanis, American Legion Post 48 and Oasis Shrine.
His funeral was Dec. 2, with Rev. Gregory B. Williams officiating and burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Ted Beshears, Buren Hamrick, Gene Haynes, Cecil Clark, Danny Seaver and O.W. Jarrett.
Honorary pallbearers were the firemen of Catawba County, and the Catawba Valley Golden “K” Kiwanis.
