CHARLES L. CANSLER, Sr.
NEWTON - Charles Leonard Cansler, Sr., 77, of Startown Road, died July 19, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory.
Born Jan. 23, 1923, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Eben and Lillie Goforth Cansler.
A member of Salem Lutheran Church, he was a former employee of Conover Chair and Superior Oil Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ella Lail Cansler; a brother, Troy Cansler, Sr.; and a sister, Mildred Whitener.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis W. and Elaine Cansler of Sherrills Ford, and Charles Leonard Cansler, Jr. of the home; five brothers, Carl Cansler, Paul Cansler and Vernon Cansler of Newton, Marshall Cansler and Richard Cansler of Maiden; a sister, Alice O'Dell of Charlotte; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Marty Ramey at 3 p.m. Saturday at his church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Cansler, Todd Cansler, Pete Whitener, Jerry Houser, Rick Cansler and Lanier Cansler.
The family will be at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

FLORA H. CANTRELL
MORGANTON - Flora Hardin Cantrell, 86, of the Lutheran Home in Hickory, died July 19, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 27, 1912, in Cherokee County, she was a member of Berea Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Henry Cantrell; two sons, Julian “Jay” Cantrell and Berl Boone Cantrell; and a grandson, Bryan T. Cantrell.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Harold and Mary Cantrell of Rutherford College and the Rev. Eugene and Betty Cantrell of Hickory; a daughter, Wanda Ellis of Detroit, Mich.; a brother, Willard Hardin of Andrews; a sister, Beulah Milsap of High Point; nine grandchildren, Dennis Cantrell, Toni Sams, Rocky Cantrell and David Cantrell of Hickory, Jimmy Cantrell, Steven Cantrell and John Cantrell of Drexel, Sherry Pugh of Rutherford College and Charlotte Ann Cantrell of Charlotte; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. J.T. Cline and Gwynn Sullivan at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sossoman Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight.

JOE L. FINGER
LINCOLNTON - Joe Leonard Finger, 67, of Salem Church Road in Maiden, died July 20, 2000, at his residence.
Born Aug. 23, 1932, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Joe and Bertha Cloninger Finger.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was a truck driver for Carolina Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Ann S. Finger; two sons, Joey L. Finger and Everette Lee Finger of Maiden; two daughters, Lisa F. Ballard of Maiden and Phyllis F. Imhauser of Denver; a brother, Millard Finger of Maiden; a sister, Deanne F. Painter of Maiden; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Walter Johnson and Wilburn Edmondson at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will be at Warlick Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

JOHN M. HERRING, Sr.
THOMASTON, Ga. - John Mose Herring, Sr., 72, of Colquitt Street, died July 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Upson County, he was a son of Janie Herring of Thomaston.
A carpenter, he was a machine repairman at a furniture factory in Hickory, N.C.
Survivors include two sons, John M. Herring, Jr. and Steve Herring of Hickory, N.C.; a daughter, Georgia Mask of Elderbran, N.C.; three stepsons, Keith Rogers, Ronnie Rogers and Rusty Rogers of Hickory, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Brenda Rogers, Cindy Rogers and Dixie Mae Rogers; three brothers, Clifford Herring of Detroit, Mich., Edward Herring and Terry Herring of Macon; four sisters, Betty Brown of Gaston, Ala., Joyce Matthews, Juanita Nixon and Vickie Smith of Thomaston; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Guy Green at 2 p.m. Sunday at Coggins Funeral Home.
FREEMAN R. THOMAS
LINCOLNTON - Freeman Ralph Thomas, 89, of Pellcare in Hickory, formerly of Vale, died July 19, 2000.
Born Sept. 16, 1910, in Hall County, Ga., he was a son of the late Harold and Miranda Butler Thomas.
He was a dairy farmer.
Survivors include two sisters, Dola Belle Cunningham of Georgia, and Myrtle Wade of Jacksonville, Fla.; a nephew, Jerry Thomas of Oklahoma; a niece and nephew-in-law, Mary S. and Richard Smith of Vale; and a number of other nephews and nieces.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Chris Kraft at 10 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at Warlick Funeral Home from 9 to 9:45 a.m. today.

RALPH E. WILLIAMS
LENOIR - Ralph Edward Williams, 88, of Falcon Ridge Road, died July 18, 2000, at his residence.
Born April 24, 1912, in Wexford, Mich., he was a son of the late James and Ethel Light Williams.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he retired as an automotive engineer.
Survivors include his wife, Florence M. Williams.
There will be no services at this time.

MAX E. DeWITT
LENOIR - Max Eugene DeWitt, 69, of Allendale Circle, died July 20, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston- Salem.
Born July 29, 1930, in Elk County, Kan., he was a son of Stella Greenwood DeWitt of Howard, Kan., and the late Harold DeWitt.
A member of Ambassador Baptist Church, he retired from Deal Typewriter in Hickory, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Wayne DeWitt; and a sister, Karen Tremble.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Jaunita Deal DeWitt; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Roger Bowman of Gamewell, and Cindy and Steve Dula of Lenoir; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Harry Blowey of Corey, Colo., and Kay and Gary Shaffer of Boulder, Colo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Setzer at 2 p.m. today at his church.
The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in North Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Deal, Worth Deal, Donald Deal, Charles Deal, Gary Austin and Jack Griffith.

MORGANTON - William “Bill” Price Simpson, Jr., 70, died July 19, 2000, at Grace Hospital.
Born Feb. 22, 1930, in Burke County, he was a son of the late William P. and Annie Mae McGimpsey Simpson Sr.
A member of First United Methodist Church in Morganton, he was owner and operator of Carpet and Drapery Shop.
A graduate of Catawba College, he was a member of Mimosa Hills Country Club.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen P. Simpson; and a sister, Carolyn Simpson Arney.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Franklin Simpson; a son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Martha Simpson of Morganton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann S. and Brian Reep of Morganton and Susan S. and Duke Dukart of Kingsport, Tenn.; a stepson, Chad and Maria Clark of Morganton; a stepdaughter, Dana and Kenny Major of Conover; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty S. and Bill Royal of Morganton; a sister-in-law, Denna and Roger McGalliard of Drexel; six grandchildren, Landon Mariani, Carolyn Reep and Bradley Reep of Morganton, Lane Dukart, Anna Dukart and Ashley Dukart of Kingsport, Tenn.; and a step-grandchild, McKenna Major of Conover.

FALLSTON - Larry Joe “Joey” Davis, 57, of Larry Davis Road in Lawndale, died July 20, 2000.
He was a son of Mozelle Davis of Lawndale and the late Earl Davis.
He was a former employee of Fine Furniture of Vale.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Davis; and a sister, Sylvia Townsend.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 38 years, Susan Carswell Davis; a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Rhonda Chapman Davis of Lincolnton; a daughter, Vickey Davis Crotts of Vale; two brothers, Randy Davis of Lawndale, and Tony Davis of Vale; three sisters, Penni Davis of Lincolnton, Earlene McIntyre of Lawndale, and Sybil Roseboro of Shelby; and two grandchildren, Nicole Davis and Zachary Davis.
