ANNIE O. CARSWELL
MORGANTON - Annie Lou Orders Carswell, 93, of Carbon City Road, died July 29, 2000, at Grace Heights after a period of declining health.
Born April 30, 1907, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Lillie Morrison Orders.
She was the last surviving charter member of Calvin Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, B.F. “Festus” Carswell; four brothers, Gorman Orders, Frank Orders, Melvin Orders and Arthur Orders; and two sisters, Eula Leonard and Ella Mae Stamey.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wilbert and Joanne Carswell of Morganton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Aileen Lowdermilk and Nancy and Roland “Dude” Lambert of Morganton; seven grandchildren, Trula Baker, Bud Lowdermilk, Sandy Lonon, Alan Lambert, Jeff Carswell, Lisa Metcalf and Ann Morris; and six great-grandchildren, Kristen Lonon, Matthew Lambert, Sloan Lowdermilk, Kaitlin Carswell, Spencer Lambert and Keri Jo Carswell.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Ralph Gouge and T.B. Deese at 11 a.m. today at her church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will remain at the church after the service.
Memorials may be made to Southmountain Childrens' Home, 7330 Myrtle Drive, Nebo, N.C. 28761; or Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese, N.C. 28690.

CLIFTON G. BROWN
Clifton “Red” Grover Brown, 58, of Hickory, died July 28, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass.
Born April 25, 1942, in Roxboro, he was a son of Agnes Crewe Haith of Mebane, and the late Carlisle Grover Brown.
He was a truck driver for Hickory Hill Furniture Company.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include companions, Kay Smith Bedford of Claremont, and Betty Jean Brown of Hickory; three sons, Roy Brown and Casey G. Bedford of Hickory, and Ronnie C. Brown of Maiden; five daughters, Shelia Brown of London, Ky., Carolyn Lowman of Connelly Springs, Verna Brown of Icard, Connie G. Bedford of Hickory, and Brandy B. Nipper of Morganton; other children, Roy L. Bedford, Jr. of Charlotte, and Kathy Bedford of Hickory; two sisters, Betty Bowes and Carolyn Wrenn of Burlington; and 22 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Ernie Richards and Michael Harrill, Jr. at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2315 A Sunset Ave., Rocky Mount, N.C. 27804.

VERNON L. WALDROP
MAIDEN - Vernon Lee Waldrop, 44, of Car Farm Road, Lincolnton, died July 28, 2000, at his residence.
Born Aug. 19, 1955, in Lincoln County, he was a son of Ray and Lillian Propst Waldrop of Lincolnton.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Nadine Waldrop; four brothers, Jackie Waldrop of Newton, Ricky Waldrop of Denver, Timmy Waldrop of Lincolnton and Eddie Waldrop of Marion; and three sisters, Doris W. Henderson of Lincolnton, and Darlene W. Coleman and Brenda Waldrop of Newton.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Matthew Sparks at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Maiden City Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight and at the home of Ray and Lillian Waldrop, 416 East Church St., Lincolnton, at other times.

RICHARD R. TRAVIS
VALDESE - Richard R. Travis, 58, of Meytre Avenue, died July 29, 2000, at Valdese General Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 17, 1941, in Susquehanna, Pa., he was a son of Ann Buchanan Travis of Susquehanna, Pa., and the late Wilford R. Travis.
Retired as a long-haul truck driver, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of American Legion Post 234 of Valdese.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richie Travis.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Vicki Beamer Travis; a son, Carl E. Travis of Hildebran; three daughters and two sons- in-law, Corrinne and J.R. Trivette of Hildebran, Jody Lynne Travis of the home and Teresa and Michael Ingle of Valdese; three brothers, Albert Travis and Marvin Travis of Susquehanna, Pa., and Gary Travis of Hildebran; six sisters, Beverly Stanton and Charlotte Travis of Susquehanna, Pa., Phyllis Deaton of Rockingham, Caroline Dininny of Valdese, Mary Jane Phillips of Badin Lake, and Christine Smith of Drexel; five grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Dwight Rice at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Service.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese, N.C. 28690.

MICHAEL L. BEAVER, Sr.
LINCOLNTON - Michael Lee Beaver, Sr., 44, of Gladden Drive, died July 29, 2000.
Born May 8, 1956, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Carl Lee Beaver and the late Hattie Chitwood Beaver.
He was a frame builder for Custom Frame Shop and was an accomplished crew chief and car owner in local NASCAR short tracks racing series.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Vickie Beaver; a son, Michael Beaver, Jr. of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Coffey of Maiden; a brother, Larry Beaver of Lincolnton; three sisters, Donna Newton of Vale, Debbie Goodwin of Conover, and Denise Lopez of Maiden; one stepson, Steven Jolley of Scottsburg, Va.; and three grandsons.
The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Ray Young at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bright Light Tabernacle Church in Hickory.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will be at Warlick Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

LOYD M. MOORE
LENOIR - Loyd Melvin Moore, 70, of West First Street, Winston-Salem, died July 28, 2000, in Winston-Salem.
Born May 30, 1930, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Melvin L. and Lucy Lynch Moore.
A member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, he retired from the furniture industry and served in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jones Moore; and a sister, Elizabeth Moore Washington.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Norma "Dottie" Jones of Lenoir; a brother, Ambus Moore of Lenoir; a sister, Pastor Mother Irene Moore Corpening of Lenoir; a step-granddaughter, Stephanie Jones of Lenoir; and a number of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Miller Carter at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at his church.
Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral and at the residence of Denise Jones, 2229 Staircase Road, at other times.

NIXIE B. CANN
MORGANTON - Nixie Barkley Cann, 86, of Morganton, died July 28, 2000, at Grace Hospital.
Born Dec. 15, 1913, in Hickory, she was a daughter of the late W.H. and Ruth Moser Barkley.
A member of Calvary Lutheran Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Cann; and a daughter, Greta Behlke.
Survivors include a son, Wayne W. Martin of Morganton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sissy M. and David Gorsline of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren, Melanie Gorsline, W. David Gorsline, Jr., Rein Behlke, Eric Behlke, Beth Martin Finein, Bill Martin and John Martin; and nine great- grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Mike Riley at 2 p.m. today at her church.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Morganton.

NELLE D. LOWMAN
Nelle Donnelly Lowman, 89, of Hildebran, died July 28, 2000, at Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, Ga.
Born March 5, 1911, in Tryon, she was a daughter of the late John P. and Carrie Belle Ballew Donnelly.
A member of Mount Hebron Lutheran Church in Hildebran, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Able Eugene Lowman.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Lucille Brown of Lithonia, Ga.; a brother, Bert Donnelly of Hickory; a sister, Pearl Phillips of Hickory; seven grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Gary Coble, Steve Brown and Don Phillips at 2 p.m. today at her church.
Burial will be in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Hildebran.
The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

LINDA A. SLATTON
GREER, S.C. - Linda A. Slatton, 57, of Hillside Drive, died July 29, 2000, at Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital.
Born in Catawba, N.C., she was a daughter of Willis and Hazel Arndt of Catawba, N.C.
A member of Highland Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, L.J. Slatton; two sons, Jeffrey Scott Slatton of Rock Hill and Russell A. Slatton of Groton, Conn.; a brother, David Arndt of Catawba, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Shell of Morganton, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Mitchell Thomas and David Slatton at 11 a.m. today at The Wood Mortuary.
Burial will be in Highland Baptist Church Cemetery.

HELEN R. WEBSTER
STONY POINT - Helen Rosetta Webster, 73, of Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville, formerly of Baltimore, Md., died July 29, 2000, at Valley Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Lee County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Amos and Anis Winkle Presley.
A Baptist, she retired as a caretaker.
She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Webster; two daughters and a son-in-law, Virgie Lee W. and Dallas Letterman of Taylorsville and Betty Ann Wilson of Rose Hill, Va.; a brother, Avery Presley of Jonesville, Va.; two sisters, Lavada Presley of Largo, Fla., and Nelda Perras of Rochelle, Ill.; and five grandchildren, Lester Webster of Baltimore, Md., David Webster of Hillsville, Va., and Shafin Letterman, Sylvia Letterman and Serena Letterman of Taylorsville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Va.
Burial will be in Cedar Hills Cemetery in Jonesville, Va.
The family will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
