JOHN D. SMITH
MOCKSVILLE - John Dean Smith, 60, of Advance, died July 30, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
Born March 31, 1939, in Union County, he was a son of Maggie S. Shook of Hildebran, and the late J.D. Smith.
He was a machine operator at Crown Wood for 17 years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Smith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include three brothers, Robert Smith of Advance, and James A. Smith and David C. Smith of Green Cove Spring, Fla.; a sister, Patrica G. Smith of Hildebran; and a number of nephews and nieces.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Revs. Shelby Harbour and Dwight Durham at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Rose Cemetery.

PHILLIP L. HARRISON
Phillip Lee Harrison, 48, of Lenoir, died July 28, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
Born January 2, 1952, in Burke County, he was son of Samuel L. and Lucille Harrison.
He was a former employee of North Carolina Forestry Service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Whistnant Harrison; and a daughter, Roxanne Elizabeth Harrison.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Lewis of Morganton, and Sarah Harris of Lenoir; two nephews; two nieces; a great-nephew; and two great-nieces.
No services have been announced.

GRACE C. BOLTON
CONOVER - Grace Carpenter Bolton, 87, of North Carolina Lutheran Home in Hickory, formerly of Catawba Street in Claremont, died Aug. 1, 2000, at the N.C. Lutheran Home.
Born Aug. 27, 1912, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Lottie Brown Carpenter.
A member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Richard Bolton; two brothers, Coyte Carpenter and Clarence Carpenter; and six sisters, Chloe Sigmon, Nona Deal, Belle Cline, Rena Bost, Nell Bolton and Sue Nealy.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Becky Bolton of Conover, Neil and Diane Bolton of Homestead, Fla., and Stan and Jean Bolton of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Lottie Davey-Beyer and Lew Beyer of Fairbanks, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Scott Bollinger at 11 a.m. Saturday at her church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Leland Eckard, David Bolton, Dale Bolton, Jason Lamb, Bryan Dula and Mark Carpenter.

RUTH S. STAMEY
VALDESE - Ruth Sain Stamey, 75, of Morganton Street, died Aug. 1, 2000, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Born April 12, 1925, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Hettie Yancey Sain.
A member of First Baptist Church, she retired as a seamer from Alba-Waldensian after 37 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus A. Stamey; and two brothers, Kenneth Sain and Elmer Sain.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Rebecca Stamey of Valdese; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Gary Jones of Valdese, and Andrea and Robert Barlow of Charlotte; a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Katherine Sain of Welcome; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Melva Pendia of Clearwater, Fla., and Merrell and Bill McCall of Valdese; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Tim Horldt at 3 p.m. Friday at her church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.

McDUFFIE S. LUTZ
McDuffie Smith Lutz, 50, of Davis Cove Road in Taylorsville, died Aug. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born Aug. 15, 1949, in Catawba County, he was a son of Jane Smith Lutz Thomson of Raleigh, and the late Joe Anderson.
A member of Bethany Lutheran Church, he worked in sales in the furniture industry.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive father, Iverson Lutz; and grandparents, Fred and Agnes Smith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a son, Austin McDuffie Lutz of Hickory; a daughter, Tisha Ann Lutz of Hickory; and a sister, Laurie Lutz Wegner of Hickory.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Greg Williams at 4 p.m. Friday at his church.

MICHAEL D. HOYLE
Michael “Mike” Dean Hoyle, 44, of Hickory, died Aug. 1, 2000, in Catawba County.
Born July 23, 1956, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Edwin “Toy” and Evelyn Clark Hoyle of Lake Norman.
Manager of Music and Games of Cherryville, he was a member of Moose Club, American Legion and a graduate of St. Stevens High School.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rose Lenhardt; and grandparents, Raymond and Blanche Hoyle.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Regina Yoder Hoyle; a son, Matthew Edwin Hoyle of the home; a daughter, Erika Dianne Hoyle of the home; a brother, Terry Hoyle of Hickory; a sister, Ruth Ann Hamby of Hickory; a grandfather, Clyde Lenhardt of Cherryville; and a number of nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Terry Pitts at 1 p.m. Friday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

GRANITE FALLS - Nellie C. Phillips, 77, of Archer Street, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Caldwell County Hospice.
Born July 18, 1923, in Lee County, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Elisha and Mary Elizabeth Fields Collins.
A member of Rhodhiss Church of God, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Phillips; a daughter, Kathy Haddix; and three infant children.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Phillips of Granite Falls and Lonnie Phillips of Hickory; four daughters, Marie Reynolds, Brenda Deaton and Donna Boggs of Granite Falls and Elsie Johnson of Rhodhiss; four brothers, Herbert Collins of California, Floyd Collins of Louisiana, Bobbie Collins of South Carolina and Ed Collins of Ohio; two sisters, Martha Pennell and Ellen Ellis of Ohio; an adopted daughter, Debbie Morningstar of Dayton, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

SHARON M. DELLINGER
NEWTON - Sharon “Sherry” Martin Dellinger, 48, of Winfield Drive in Maiden, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1951, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of Yates Terry Martin and Esther Drum Martin of Newton.
She was a sewer for Southern Furniture Company.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Rodney Dellinger; a son, Steven Dellinger of the home; two sisters, Susan Lane of Newton and Holly Martin of Kinston.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Fred Thompson at 3 p.m. Friday at Willis Reynolds Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.

MARY N. REID
Mary Jo Neal Reid, 60, of Seventh Street, SE, died July 30, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 3, 1940, in Blacksburg, S.C., she was a daughter of Myrtle Smith Neal of Hickory and the late Joseph Neal.
A member of Friendship Baptist Church, she was on the finance committee and news staff letter.
She retired as a business instructor from Catawba Valley Community College. A graduate of North Carolina Central University, she also was a member of the honor society Phi Beta Kappa, former secretary of Ridgeview Reunion Committee and valedictorian of the 1959 senior class at Ridgeview High School.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a daughter, DeLisa Reid of the home; an adopted daughter, Iona Saddler of the home; two adopted sisters, Sarah Johnson of Hickory, and Rosemary Manson of Charlotte; an aunt, Lillian Neal of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a number of other relatives and friends including Faye Dula, Pastor Peggy Geter and Emma Johnson of Hickory.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. E.B. Wilkerson at 3 p.m. Friday at her church.
Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
