LORETTA C. PYATTE
VALDESE - Loretta Campbell “Nana” Pyatte, 63, of Cook Road, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Valdese General Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1936, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Carl T. and Geneva Deal Campbell.
A charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Lon Pyatte; a son, Rodney Dale Pyatte of Morganton; two daughters, Carlotta Denise Ross of Valdese, and Star Baughman of Nebo; two brothers, Carl Robert “Bear” Campbell and Jerry Campbell of Valdese; a sister, Helen Williams of Valdese; eight grandchildren; and a great- grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Scott Moneyham at 3 p.m. Friday at her church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight.

HOWARD C. EPLEY
MORGANTON - Howard Calvin Epley, 82, of Dysartsville Road, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Broughton Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born May 12, 1918, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Herbert C. and Myrtie Epley Epley.
A member of Mountain View 2 Baptist Church, he retired from Wamsutta Doblin, Inc. of Morganton.
He also worked for W.R. Patton Construction and Highlander Ltd. and Henredon Furniture.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Epley; and four sisters, Ethel Epley Farris, Carrie Epley Clontz, Beulah Epley and Florence Epley.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Myrtle Deaton Epley; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Joette Epley of Lenoir; two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty Epley Taylor of Morganton, and Frances E. and Walter Thomas of Hickory; a brother, Roy Epley of Marion; three sisters, Sadie Epley Farris Eller of Drexel, Raye Epley Whitener Parrish of Columbia, S.C., and Myrtle Epley Downs of Nebo; four grandchildren, Robert Steven Epley, Kimberly Dawn Epley, Franklin Todd and Erin Taylor and Jason Scott and Alea Taylor; and three great-grandchildren, Ian Perry Taylor, Olive Denton and Christian Stamey.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Burl Sain and David Orders at 2 p.m. today at his church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of Betty Taylor, 4749 Dysartsville Road, at other times.

MORGANTON - Loretta Benton Helms, 33, of Brista Trail, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Grace Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1966, in Burke County, she was a daughter of Mary Jane Benton Benton of Angier, and the late Marshall Benton.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James T. and Annie Estelle Benton.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Robert Thomas Helms; two daughters, Amanda Nicole Wilson and Annie Margaret Helms of Morganton; three brothers, Mark Benton of Icard, Dwayne Banks of Angier, and Michael McMahon of Telford, Tenn.; and a sister, Tammy Benton Tallent of Angier.
A private service will be held at a later date.
The family will be at the residence of Eva Belle Crowder, 4797 Duckworth Circle, at other times.

DELORISE M. PETERSON
The Rev. Delorise Marie Peterson, 45, of Twenty-Sixth Street, SW, Hickory, died Aug. 2, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill after a period of declining health.
Born June 20, 1955, in Columbia, S.C., she was a daughter of the late David L. and Mildred Mackey Peterson.
A member of Hope Cathedral Word of Life Ministry, she was the associate minister and also a member of the Praise Team and Usher Board.
A member of Charlotte Chapter United Order of Tents and Mollies Lillies 596 in Charlotte, she was a sock boarder with Nueville Industries in Hildebran.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Arthur Mackey; and great-grandmother, Gussie Mackey.
Survivors include two brothers, Richard Lawrence and David Peterson, Jr. of Hickory; four sisters, Lynn Peterson and Beth Peterson of Hickory, Denise Young of Kings Mountain, and Georgia Guest of Shelby; a grandmother, Edna L. Mackey of Hickory; an uncle, Johnny Peterson of Hickory; a godmother, the Rev. Pruella Sanders of Kings Mountain; two god-brothers, George Reid, Jr. and John Reid of Newton; and a number of cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted by Bishop Terry L. Phillips and the Rev. Webster Lytle at 2 p.m. Saturday at Morningstar First Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

MORGANTON - Joseph Howard Mathews, 59, of Faet Street, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born April 5, 1941, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Joseph G. and Frances Corpening Mathies.
A member of Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church, he was a former employee of Drexel Heritage for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Alexander Mathews, Douglas Garfield Mathies and Arthur Nathaniel Mathies; and two sisters, Delia M. Corpening and Connell Mathies.
Survivors include a brother, Edward R. “Eddie” Mathies of Morganton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rose Mary M. and Wilson Collette of Morganton, and Josephine M. Patterson of the home; two uncles, Hugh Corpening and James “Jimmy” Corpening of Morganton; two aunts, Mildred Pearson and Delia Caldwell of Morganton; and a number of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Ronald Knight, Annie Belle Corpening, J.A. Hemby, W.F. McIntosh, Jr. and Herbert Carter at 2 p.m. today at Ebony Funeral Service.

ROY F. ARROWOOD
MORGANTON - Roy F. Arrowood, 75, of Morris Loop, died Aug. 1, 2000, at Britthaven of Morganton after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 24, 1924, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Pressley and Frances Watkins Arrowood.
He retired from Cross Cotton Mill in Marion, after 38 years of service.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laverne Clark Arrowood; a daughter, Linda Arrowood Revis; and a grandson, Tony Arrowood.
Survivors include a son, Danny Wayne Arrowood of Marion; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Howard Abernathy of Raleigh; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Burean Clark at 1 p.m. today at Sossoman Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.

EARL E. BRADFORD, Sr.
LENOIR - Earl Edwin Bradford, Sr., 89, of Oak Hill Park Circle, died Aug. 2, 2000, at Caldwell County Hospice.
Born April 18, 1911, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Dock C. and Ada Watson Bradford.
A member of Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, he served as a member of the choir, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, trustee and board member.
A rural letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a charter member of the Oak Hill Ruitan Club, Little River Volunteer Fire Department board of directors, American Legion, Disabled Veterans, Moose Club and Hibriten Masonic Lodge 262.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Bradford and D.C. Bradford, Jr.; three sisters, Elsie Gragg, Faye Kiser and Elizabeth Johnson; and a grandchild, Joseph Deal Edwards.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Anna Virginia Deal Bradford; three sons and daughters-in-law, E. Edwin and Janice H. Bradford and Roger D. and Carolyn C. Bradford of Hickory, and Keith W. and Grace H. Bradford of Lenoir; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne B. and Terry Edwards of Lenoir; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Chuck Byers and Lynn Hawkins at 2 p.m. Saturday at his church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

TAYLORSVILLE - Opal Jane “Granny” Venable Hill, 79, of Bethlehem, died Aug. 2, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born June 20, 1921, in Surry County, she was a daughter of the late John and Pearl Edmonds Venable.
A member of Promised Land Ministries, in Bethlehem, she was retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Billy Hill and Michael Hill; four brothers, John Venable, Cecil Venable, Paul Venable and Robert Venable; and two sisters, Pauline Hill and Virginia Hill.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny and Patricia Hill and Larry Janet Hill of Bethlehem; three daughters, Polly Jane Davis, Nancy Roger Howlett of Bethlehem, and Wanda and Shelton Taylor of Valdese; three sisters, Mary Black of Augusta, Ga., Frankie Shore of Rockingham, and Marie Heflin of Aberdeen; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of nephews and nieces.

CLAYTON B. WHISNANT
MORGANTON - Clayton B. Whisnant, 41, died Aug. 2, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 30, 1958, in Burke County, he was a son of Wilma Bolay Whisnant of Morganton, and the late James Clayton Whisnant.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a sister, Diana Webb of Mount Dora, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Michael Riley at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church.
The family will remain at the church after the service.
