CONOVER - Ray Alexander Johnson, 79, of Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville, formerly of Eighth Street, NE, died Aug. 5, 2000, at Valley Nursing Center.
Born June 25, 1921, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Augustus W. and Esther Hendren Johnson.
A member of Concordia Lutheran Church, he retired from Southern Furniture Company.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Hefner Johnson of Conover; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan Johnson of Raleigh, and Tina and Chip Cranford of Charlotte; a sister, Nell Hinson of Anchorage, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Donald Oldenburg at 2 p.m. today in Conover City Cemetery.
The family will remain at the cemetery after the service.

LENOIR - Sarah Sanders Cox, 65, of West Lenoir Drive, died Aug. 5, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 26, 1935, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Bertha Hart Sanders.
A member of Marion Freewill Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Sanders.
Survivors include her husband, John M. Cox; two sons, John Michael Cox and Jimmy Lee Cox of Lenoir; four daughters and sons-in-law, Teah and Issac Jackson and Elisa and Kenneth Marley of Ferguson, andMillie and Alfred Pennell and Pamela and Joseph Bass of Lenoir; a brother, Arthur H. Sanders of Lenoir; a stepbrother, John Henry Allen of Lenoir; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Lloyd King at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Cox family cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Cox III, Billy Pennell, Pete Cox, Michael Pennell, Jeff Marley, Alfred Pennell and Dale Jackson.

VALDESE - Octa Stamey Pugh, 91, of Dock Pugh Road, Connelly Springs, died Aug. 6, 2000, at College Pines Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Born July 13, 1909, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Liza Jane Martin Stamey.
She retired as a hosiery manufacturing inspector.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dock E. Pugh; and two sons, Ralph E. Pugh and Thad R. Pugh.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby L. Pugh and James E. Pugh of Connelly Springs; two daughters, Sue Benfield and Betty Robinson of Connelly Springs; a brother, J.P. Stamey of Vale; a sister, Margie Owens of Valdese; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Joel Cook at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Service.
Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

VALDESE - Alma Crane Hamby, 46, of Track Sideway, Hudson, died Aug. 4, 2000, at Hospice House of Caldwell County.
Born Nov. 19, 1953, in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of Bertha White Crane of Harmony, and the late Shirley Crane.
A member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a son and daughter-in-law, Lennie C. and Bonnie Hamby of Hudson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Bonnie and Jerry Reid of Lenoir, and Amy Hamby of Granite Falls; two brothers, Dan Crane and David Crane of Lenoir; a sister, Louise Barker of Hudson; and a granddaughter, Bailey Hamby.
A memorial service was held Sunday at Family Funeral Care, Kirksey Chapel.

Evelyn Bean Davis, died Aug. 7, 2000, at Brian Center East.
Born Nov. 11, 1915, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Margaret Whisnant Bean.
A member of Mountain View Mennonite Church, she retired from Bassett Industries.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eligah Allen Davis; a brother, Isaac Bean; a sister, Inez Rage; and a grandson, Danny Carver.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby Allen Davis and Tommy Davis of Mountain View and Billy Davis of Hickory; four daughters, Amalean Williams of Mountain View, Sue Heavner of Newton, Boneta Carver and Judy Starnes of Vale; a niece, Betty McCabe of West Springfield, Mass.; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Edward Godshall and Wellington Moyer at 4 p.m. Thursday at her church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LENOIR - Robert Harold Beane, 82, died Aug. 7, 2000, at Sterling House in Hickory.
Born July 9, 1918, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Fritz and Maude Carlton Beane.
A member of Hudson First Baptist Church, he retired from Fairfield Chair after 35 years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine White Beane; and a sister, Lucille Beane.
Survivors include his wife, Freeta Keller Beane; a son, Robert D. Beane of Hildebran; a daughter, Katherine B. Johanson of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Betty and Paul Christopher of Stony Point; a brother, Gerald C. Beane of Granite Falls; two sisters, Doris Philman of Bell, Fla., and Shirley Reid of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by Drs. C. Wade Dellinger and Billy Rivers and the Rev. Michael Isaac at 3 p.m. today at his church.
Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

A charter member of Community Baptist Church in Dallas, he retired from Talon Inc. of Stanley.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nell Brafford Armstrong; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. and Lois Armstrong of Newton and David J. and Dana Armstrong of Dallas; a daughter, Sandra J. Canning of Foxboro, Mass.; eight grandchildren, John M. Canning, Michael C. Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late George H. and Estelle Fleming Curtis.
A member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, she also attended First United Methodist Church in Morganton.
She was a hair stylist and cosmetologist for 41 years at Cinderella Beauty Shop and the Hair House.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Simpson Abernathy; a brother, Edward Curtis; and a sister, Adelaide Curtis.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Elaine Abernathy of Morganton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Gary Benton of Glen Alpine; a brother, Harry Curtis of Charlotte; five grandchildren and three grandchildren-in-law, Stefanie and Ken Brogley, Stephen and Melissa Burris of Morganton, Patrick Abernathy, Shannon and Bryan Drake and Chris Abernathy of Denver, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren, Brittney Smith, Karissa Burris, Taylor Brogley, Tyler Brogley and Stephen Dakota Burris.

A member of Central Baptist Church of Whitnel, he was a self-employed truck driver.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Sanders; and sisters, Mary Sanders and Lillian Bishop.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Childress Sanders; two sons, James Bryan Saunders of Lenoir, and Kelly Mark Saunders of Hudson; a daughter, Amber Saunders Drum of Lenoir; four brothers, Tommy Sanders, Carter Saunders and Teddy Saunders of Lenoir, and Charles Saunders of Love Valley; two sisters, Ida Hall of Hudson and Martha Hall of Lenoir; and four grandchildren.
