William D. Walsh, 63, of St. James
William D. Walsh of St. James, died Friday, December 8, 2000.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y., son of the late John and Kathryn Walsh.
He was a member of the U.S. Army.
He obtained his bachelor's degree at State University of New York at Brockport and a master's degree from Hofstra University, Uniondale, N.Y.
He resided in Freeport, N. Y., and was an educator in the Freeport Public School System for over 30 years.
He retired to Southport, and resided at St. James Plantation.
He is survived by a brother, Dr. John E. Walsh, II: two sisters, Geraldine McFarland and Patricia Peters; two daughters, Margaret Frances Marshall and Kathryn Gaetana Muldowney; a son, William Daniel Walsh Jr.; and a granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Muldowney.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Southport, at 9 a.m. Friday.
East Coast Cremation and Funeral Services of Sunset Beach is in charge.
Virginia M. Blackwell, 83, former resident
Virginia M. Blackwell, 83, formerly of Boiling Spring Lakes, died Monday, December 11, 2000, at Fifth Avenue Health Care in Rome, Ga., after a long illness.
She was born January 24, 1917, in San Francisco, Calif.
She was an avid golfer and bridge player and was president of the Women's Golf Association at Fox Squirrel Country Club.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Thomas E. Blackwell.
Also surviving are three daughters and one son, Carole and Bob Merriam of Charlotte, Deb and Terry Ledbetter of Rome, Ga.,Lynn and Winn Story of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Terry and Thomas Blackwell of Lithonia, Ga.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild.
Following cremation, there will be a private family service before she is returned to her birthplace in California.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Virginia Garriss Love, 92, of Hot Springs, Va.
Virginia Garriss Love, 92, of Hot Springs, Va., a former resident and property owner at Bald Head Island, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at The Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs.
She was born May 20, 1909, in Conway, the daughter of the late John Paul Garriss, Sr. and Molly Truitt Garriss.
In 1933, she married Frank Steven Love, Sr., who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Love attended North Carolina Women’s College for Business at UNC-Greensboro and took her nursing training at Jackson Hospital in 1927.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston.
She traveled extensively throughout the world and the United States with the Florida Citrus Commission.
She is survived by a son, Frank Steven Love, Jr. of Millboro, Va.; a daughter, Florida Love Scott of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Brenton Lewis Young of Shelby, Frank Kevin Young of Macon, Ga., and Rasa Love McIver of Raleigh; an adopted grandson, Jensole Fisker of Denmark; five great-grandchildren; a brother, John Paul Garriss, Jr. of Conway.
Another brother, Stanley Garriss, also preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be conducted from the graveside at a later date at Conway Community Cemetery in Conway.
The family suggests that memorial contributions in Mrs. Love’s name be made to the Millboro Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 295, Millboro, Va. 24460.
Mrs. Janis Arnold Gore, 71, of Southport
Mrs. Janis Arnold Gore, 71, of Southport, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Southport Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Jonathan Kelley and the Rev. Roger Paxton officiating.
Interment followed in Northwood Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Billy Dosher, Richie Dosher, James H. Russ, Bill Gray, Joe Medlin and Billy Bob Hilger.
Mrs. Gore was born March 31, 1930, in Southport, a daughter of the late James Clifton and Annie Ringgold Arnold, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Letha Arnold Warth.
Survivors include her husband, Bernice Gore of the home; a son, Kenneth King and wife Milta of Kenansville; a step-son, Gehrig Spencer of Wilmington; a sister, Gilda A. Rogers of Oak Island; two grandchildren, Kristin and Margaret King; and nieces and nephews Richard Orenstein, Diane Vereen, Gina Jones, Prissy Horne, Renee' Hilger and Billy Horne.

Ms. Amy Lynn Marshall Justice, 40, of Charlotte, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at her residence.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m., at Hankins & Whittington’s Dilworth Chapel, with the Rev. Allen Laymon officiating.
Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Ms. Justice was born July 20, 1960, in Glendale, Mo., the daughter of Roy Marshall and Mary Jane Cochran Marshall.
She was a former postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and a massage therapist at Myers Park Country Club.
She is survived by her son, Dexter Yager, III of Charlotte; her parents, Roy and Jane Marshall of Southport; sisters, Kathy Jewell and husband Frank of Oak Island, and Leann Marshall of Charlotte; fiance, Monte Rosemond of Charlotte; uncle, Robert Cochran of Ashland, Oregon; nieces, Mindy Barker and Jordan Marshall of Charlotte; nephew, Scott Williams of Savannah, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Abby Marshall.

Loyd Ray Brown, 44, of Garden City Beach, S.C., died Sunday, May 27, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Born October 23, 1956, in Southport, he was the son of Loyd Benton Brown and Zilphia Muncy Mobley.
He was a commercial fisherman, an avid gardener and bicyclist.
Surviving, in addition to his father in Southport, and his mother in Garden City Beach, are his brother, Jay Mobley; sisters, Renee Brown, Elaine Brown and Pam Derleth; nieces, Jennifer Reichbaum, Melissa Cartun and Stephanie Derleth.
Services will be private.

Bobby Edward Jones, 65, of Shoreland Nursing Home, Whiteville, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

Jones was born June 18, 1935, in Tabor City, son of the late Charlie T. and Myrtle Hewett Jones, and was a former resident of Chadbourn, and Southport.
While in Chadbourn, he attended God’s Church and while in Southport, attended Midway Apostolic Church.
He was a U. S. Army veteran and a retired cannery worker.
He was the widower of Margaret Lee Jones and is survived by three daughters, Annette Grainger of Tabor City, Dorothy Rose Whitehurst and Barbara Ann Jones; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Kay Burton Hayes, 67, of Boiling Spring Lakes, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, at Lee Funeral Home Chapel, Clinton, Md.
Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Md.

Mrs. Hayes was born February 20, 1934, in Bluefield, W. Va., a daughter of the late William C. and Margaret Martin Burton, and moved here from Charlotte, in 1993.
She lived in Ft. Washington, Md., from 1960 to 1983, and was a member of Church of the Holy Communion in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Donald H. Hayes of the home; a son, Donald B. Hayes of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Terry Lynn Atkinson of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Pat Cronin of Pomona, Calif.; a grandchild, Cameron Atkinson.
