Joseph J. Scull
Departed this life in Harrellsville, the 13th inst., Joseph J. Scull, an old and highly esteemed citizen of that town, having nearly completed his 70th year.
He was one of the first citizens of Harrellsville, and when he died, was i[t]s oldest citizen.
He had been a merchant of the highest integrity for forty years, and was for some years mayor of the town.
He leaves a spotless character, and his family and many friends lament his departure -- Economist.

Mrs. Venie Askew Funeral Services Are Held Sunday
Roduco -- Mrs. Emily Lavenia Askew, 62, widow of W. J. Askew, died at her home here Wednesday.
She is survived by three daughters and seven sons, Mrs. C. A. Lilley of Farmville, Mrs. J. I. Askew of Roduco, and Mrs. J. E. Lilley of Gates, W. L. and J. T. Askew of Eure, J. L., W. J., Jr., and Lonnie Lee of Roduco, and Ernest and Allen, U.S. Army; one sister, Mrs. Ivey Turner of Eure; eighteen grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at Eure Christian church Sunday by Rev. J. M. Roberts of Windsor, and Rev. J. M. Jolliff of Gatesville.
A quartette, composed of Mrs. T. L. Carter and Mrs. L. C. Carter, C. B. Blair and Dr. J. M. Detwielder, accompanied by Mrs. T. Sloane Guy sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "Sweet Peace," "A Gift of God's Love" and "In the Hour of Trial."
Members of the Missionary Society and friends of Mrs. Askew were honorary pallbearers and her nephews were active pallbearers.

Woman Born In Slavery Dies
Sophie Hunter, 92-year-old Negro house maid, who has worked for a number of people in and around Sunbury, died on September 5 from the infirmities of old age.
Her parents, Isaac and Amy Rountree, were slaves of Solomon Rountree of Gates county.
Sophie served as maid to one of Mr. Rountree's daughters and she stayed with her mistress until slavery was abolished.
Sophie served as midwife for both wife and Negro mothers in this section for many years and was respected by people of both races.
In 1863, Sophie, then 14, married Tom Hunter, and to them were born 17 children, four of which are still living.
James Crowder Hunter and Inetta Hunter never married and were living with their mother at the time of her death.

Burns Are Fatal to 73-Year-Old Woman of Corapeake Community
Funeral services for Mrs. Elza Riddick Brinkley, 73, who died at her home in Corapeake, Friday night were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert P. Miller, pastor.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Brinkley died from the effects of severe burns sustained Friday when she seized a lamp which was flaring and ran outside with it and her clothing became ignited.
Mrs. Brinkley is survived by her husband, Jethro O. Brinkley; four sons, Otis R. Brinkley, of Shawboro; Benjamin Brinkley, of Sunbury; Willis Edward Brinkley, of Suffolk; a daughter, Mrs. Eunice Brinkley, of Corapeake; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Riddick, of Norfolk; Walter Riddick, of Newport News, and William Riddick, of Belvedere.

DEATHS - Mr. Lemuel Newsome, of Union, who was probably the oldest citizen, died last week.
He was 96 years old.
Mrs. Sallie Northcott, of Winton, died very suddenly on Saturday last.
Capt. Abram Thomas, one of Hertford's oldest and most respected citizens fell dead while feeding a horse on Sunday last.
