Carmen (Nick) Nickell, 69, of Bolivia

Carmen (Nick) Nickell, 69, of Bolivia, died Monday, September 23, 2002.

Born in Fayetteville, W. Va., on September 8, 1933, he was son of the late Charles and Leila Nickell.

Survivors include two daughters, Toni Benton and Connie Gregory; four grandchildren, Bradley and Christopher Benton, Pamela Rinehart and John Gregory; three sisters, Margaret Bourne, Genevieve Lehman and Geraldine Westfall.

Memorial services will be held today (Wednesday) at 6 p.m., at Holden Beach Church of God, with the Rev. Tom Sprouse officiating.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, P. O. Box 987, Shallotte, NC 28459.

Vicki Robbins Brendle, 32, of Winnabow

Vicki Lanell Robbins Brendle, 32, of Winnabow, died Saturday, September 28, 2002, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born in New Hanover County on November 7, 1969, she was a daughter of Elbert and Joyce Ward Robbins of Columbus County.

Mrs. Brendle was a member of Liberty Holiness Chapel.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Alicia Swain and Miranda Swain, both of Bolivia; two brothers, Keith Robbins of Winnabow, Gary Robbins and wife, Wanda of Winnabow; two sisters, Aleta Ferguson and husband, Gary of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Cheryl Robbins of Belville.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday), at Mill Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles West and the Rev. Elizabeth Caine officiating.

Interment followed in Robbins Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Roberts, Josh Robbins, Jeremy Robbins, Tommy Caine, Jr., Benjamin Huffman, III, Christopher Frasl, Timothy Mintz and David Barron.

Janice Lee Hewett, 54, of Shallotte

Janice Lee Hewett, 54, of Shallotte, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Hewett was born May 2, 1948, in McRae, Ga.

She was a daughter of the late Jessie Thelton and Magalene Williams Holmes.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Levi Keith Hewett.

Mrs. Hewett is survived by her husband, Lattimore Hewett; four sons, Billy Hewett and wife Susan, Christopher Hewett, David Hewett and James Hewett, all of Shallotte; two daughters, Brenda Aiello of Sardus, Ga., and Donna Berry and husband Patrick of Oak Island; a brother, Jesse Dave Holmes of Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted at Brunswick Memorial Gardens on Saturday, with the Rev. Eddie Hicks officiating .

Truett Lacy Bowen, 80, of Virgilina, Va.

Truett Lacy Bowen, 80, of Virgilina, Va., died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at his home.

He was born December 12, 1921, in Halifax County, Va., a son of the late Oscar G. Bowen and Annie Talley Bowen.

He had worked as a self-employed farmer and was a member of North Fork Baptist Church, the American Legion and Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Palmer Bowen, of the home; two daughters, Brenda B. Ellixson and husband, Ray of Southport, and Dianne B. Lowery and husband, Clem of Roxboro, Va.; two sons, Dural L. Bowen, Sr. of Virgilina, and Dwight C. Bowen and wife, Marilyn of Virgilina; a brother, Watson Bryant Bowen of Virgilina; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mason Bowen and Garland Bowen, both of Virgilina.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Virgilina Cemetery with the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Association, Virgilina Cemetery Committee or North Fork Baptist Church Building Fund.

Donald Rollin Adams
Navy veteran, retired from Union Carbide

Donald Rollin Adams, 80, of Southport, died Friday, November 29, 2002, at his residence.

Adams was cremated and his cremains will be interred in Willsboro, N.Y., at a later date.

He was born November 6, 1922, in Willsboro, N.Y., son of the late John and Ruth Garvey Adams, and moved to Oak Island, later moving to Southport, in 1989.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Adams was stationed at Fort Caswell, in 1943.

He retired from the Linde division of Union Carbide in 1978, after 29 years of service.

He loved hunting, fishing and landscape and was an avid bingo player.

Adams also enjoyed needlework and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ida, of the home; a sister, Phebe Begly of Willsboro, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers, John, Bob and Billy Adams.

The family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to Ocean View United Methodist Church Building Fund, 600 Yaupon Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465.

Sheila Ann Kirby Clark
Former employee at Chandler’s Market

Mrs. Sheila Ann Kirby Clark, 68, of Southport died Friday, November 29, 2002, at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a member, with Fr. Douglas Lawson officiating.

Mrs. Clark was born February 26, 1934, in Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Thomas J. Kirby and Ruth (McDermott) Devlin and moved to Southport, in 1984.

For many years, she worked at The Boston Globe newspaper and retired from Chandler’s Market on Bald Head Island.

She was a member of Women of the Moose #2059.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas J. Kirby, Jr., and is survived by two sons, Ray Clark and wife, Lynn of Oak Island, Michael Clark and wife, Ruth of Rowley, Mass.; a daughter, Sheila O'Keefe and husband, Michael of Ipswich, Mass.; a sister, Patricia McCarthy of Brockton, Mass.; a brother, Jerome Kirby of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Michael, Sean, Kirby Lynn and Kevin Clark, Matthew and Caitlin O’Keefe, and Derek Ryan; one great-grandchild, Alison Ray Clark.

George William Milligan, Jr.
Retired from Buick Motor Division of GM

George William Milligan, Jr., 76, of Bolivia died Monday, December 2, 2002, at Dosher Nursing Center.

Milligan was born March 29, 1926, in Bladen County, and was the son of the late George William Milligan, Sr. and Delta Jane Canady Milligan.

He retired from Buick Motor Division of General Motors of Flint, Mich., and returned to Brunswick County, in 1979 and became an avid fisherman and shrimper.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Milligan; four daughters, Billie Ann Baggett of Fayetteville, Kathy Lowey and husband, Bill of Columbus, Ohio, Cheryl Johnson and husband, Stephen of Oscoda, Mich., and Cindy Strutski of Bolivia; five grandchildren, Sarah Johnson, Kathryn Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Kaycie Lee Fairchild and Matthew Fairchild; a brother, Ken Milligan of Bolivia, two sisters, Caroline Maultsby of Southport, and Erma Twitty of Charlotte.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, from the residence at Bolivia.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

The Rev. Jeffrey R. Brewer, Jr.
Ordained minister of World Faith Clinic

The Rev. Jeffrey R. (Jack) Brewer, Jr., 61, of Supply, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at his residence.

Born in Greensboro on May 15, 1941, he was a son of the late Jeffrey R. Brewer, Sr. and Robbie Irene Johnson Brewer.

He was retired from Brewer and Son Roofing Co. and was an ordained minister of World Faith Clinic and A.I.G.A. and was a member and elder of New Beginnings Full Gospel Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Brewer.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Shirley J. Brewer; their children, Ruth Smith of Supply, Sherry B. Burke of Winnabow, Jack D. Brewer of Supply, Jerri Collis of Tall Timbers, Md., Lisa Brewer of Waldo, Ark., Dwayne Brewer of Callaway, Md., Timothy and Michael Smith of Supply; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Boyd Johnson, Charles Brewer and Bill Brewer, all of Greensboro; and a sister, Pat Edwards of Reidsville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Beginnings Full Gospel Church, with the Rev. William Chappell officiating.

Interment will follow in Galloway Memorial Cemetery, Supply.
