R. K. Lindquist, M.D.
MORGANTON - Dr. Richard Kurt Lindquist, 69, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001.
He was born March 31, 1932, in Albany, N.Y. A graduate of Duke University and the Duke University School of Medicine, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Morganton, for 35 years.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred Hazlett of Sarasota, Fla.; his wife, Nancy; son, Kurt and wife, Sherry of Charlotte; daughter, Sally of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter, Pookie, and son, Todd, both of Park City, Utah; grandsons, Rick, Gray and Axel and granddaughter, Campbell; and sister, Shirley Veenstra of Whittier, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.

Della Coffey Clarke
MORGANTON - Della Coffey Clarke, 84, of Hartland Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Camelot Manor Nursing Care.
Born Sept. 29, 1917, in Burke County, she was a daughter to the late Henry and Virginia "Jenny" Branch Coffey.
She was a homemaker and a member of Conway's Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Clarke; a son, Mason David Clarke; three brothers, Lawrence, Les and Carl Coffey; two sisters, Vera Powell and Ellie Clarke; and a grandson, Ricky Greene.
Surviving are three sons, James Clarke, Max Clarke and Johnny Clarke, all of Morganton; two daughters, Barbara Greene of Morganton, and Bonnie Coleman of Cleveland, Tenn.; a brother, John Coffey of Morganton; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Raby officiating.
Interment will follow in Conway's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Johnathan Clarke, Matthew Clarke, Chris Richardson, Tom Martin, Rodney Clarke and Ronnie Suttles.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bobby Lee 'Bob' Greene
VALDESE - Bobby Lee "Bob" Greene, 67, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, after a brief illness.
Bob was born Dec. 11, 1933, in Union County, to the late Lonnie Wilson and Frankie Jane Hinson Greene.
He was a graduate of East Carolina University and was retired as the recreation director for the Town of Valdese.
Bob's major contributions to the community include the Steve Rostan Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, the Arbor of Honor, McGalliard Falls Park, Reconstruction of Meytre Mill, Memorable Valdese Sports Figures of the Century, Valdese Mayors of the Century Field of Flowers, and Past President of the Valdese Rotary Club.
He served his county in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was Post Commander of American Legion Post 234, Valdese.
The membership of Post 234 proudly honored him as their leader, friend, and major contributor to the quality of life for this community by naming the American Legion Ball Field, the "Bob Greene Legion Field."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James W. Greene.
Surviving are four brothers, Wriston Greene and his wife, Bessie, L.W. Greene and his wife, Peggy, Charles Greene and his wife, Doris, and Nat Greene and his wife, Dot, all of Monroe; five sisters, Olive Harkey, Blondell Lane and her husband, Cam, Edith Simpson and her husband, Heath, Jessie Goodman, all of Monroe, and Myrtle Hartwell of Seminole, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 234, Church Street, Valdese, with members of the American Legion officiating.

Raye Anderson
GLEN ALPINE - Raye Causby Anderson, 89, of Main Street, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Burke Long Term Care following an extended illness.
Born Sept. 1, 1912, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Mary Ada Causby.
She was a member of the Calvin Heights Baptist Church and an avid gardener.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Anderson, and a brother, Raymond Causby.
Surviving are a sister, Edward Bradshaw; a niece, Linda Brittian and husband, Carl; and a number of cousins.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Glen Alpine Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank Gordan officiating.
The family will receive friends today at the home of Mrs. Bradshaw, 115 Main St., Glen Alpine.

Kenneth Lavoid Givens
GIBSONVILLE - Kenneth Lavoid Givens, 73, of North N.C. 61, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, near his residence as a result of an auto accident.
Born Aug. 24, 1938, in Lauderdale County, Ala., he was a son of the late Herbert and Callie Jones Givens.
He was a member of Apples Chapel Christian Church in Gibsonville, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Givens.
Mr. Givens is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of Greensboro; brothers, Eugene Givens and Bobby Givens, both of Florence, Ala.; sisters, Thalia Robertson and Shirley Norred, both of Florence, and Vandalia "Dolly" Hendrix and Betty Morgan, both of Tennessee; grandchildren, Kenneth P. Givens of Greensboro, and Christopher C. Givens of Hilton Head, S.C., and a great-grandson, David Edge, of Hilton Head.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. today, at Jonas Ridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Carswell officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

HICKORY - Marie Ward Laughter, 72, of 36th Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at her residence, after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 12, 1928, in Gastonia, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William B. Ward, Sr. and Hazel Dawn Ward.
She was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church, and served as the church organist for West Hickory Baptist Church for 15 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harvey R. Laughter.
Surviving are a son, Michael Laughter and wife, Susan, of Hickory; daughters, Myra Laughter of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Diane Jones and husband, Bill, of Asheboro, N.C., and Amelia Capalbo and husband, Kevin, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Blackwelder of Salem, Ohio, and Mrs. Sandra Mauney of Columbus, Ohio; an aunt, Mrs. Norine Rose of Danville, Va.; and eight grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today, at Catawba Memorial Park Mausoleum, followed by a memorial worship service at 7 p.m., at West Hickory Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends following the worship service today at West Hickory Baptist Church.

Bertha H. Causby
MORGANTON - Bertha Hicks Causby, 91, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Britthaven of Morganton, following a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1910, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late James Edney Hicks and Minnie Deal Hicks.
She was a retired employee of Drexel-Heritage Furnishings and was a member of Missionary Ride Baptist Church and a former member of Asheville Street Baptist Church.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and faithful church member.
Cooking and being with family and friends were the joys in her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nadine Harbison; a sister, Essie Ingle; and brothers, Garland and Wilson Hicks.
Surviving are sons and their wives, Royce and Maria Causby of Virginia Beach, Va., Charles and Lynn Causby and Jim and Janis Causby, all of Morganton; a daughter and her husband, Patricia and Jerry Warlick of Morganton; a brother, James Hicks of Apple Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at Missionary Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today, at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour.

Nita McFalls
MORGANTON - Juanita Elizabeth "Nita" McFalls, 77, of Fish Hatchery Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Grace Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Earl McFalls and Nettie Cuthbertson McFalls.
She was a retired employee of Premier Hosiery.
She was also a dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Nina Lingerfelt and Peggy Galloway; a brother, John McFalls; and a nephew, Steve McFalls.
Surviving are a brother, Leroy McFalls and wife, Nancy, of Morganton; a sister-in-law, Lib McFalls of Morganton; former brothers-in-law, Chris Lingerfelt of Thomasville, and Bill Galloway of Morganton; nephews, Mark McFalls and wife, Tammy, Jeff Lingerfelt and wife, Angie, and Scott Galloway; a niece, Jonie McGurk and husband, Timothy; two grand-nephews and three grand-nieces.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Friday, at Zion Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ralph May, Jimmy Lambert and Lee Shuffler officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4 p.m. at the church.

MORGANTON - Helen Breedlove Waldrop, 75, of Lenoir Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Hospice of Burke County, Shytle House, following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 3, 1926, in Canton, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Sara Cabe Breedlove.
She operated a beauty shop in her home and, for many years, she and her husband, the late Edwin H. "Red" Waldrop, Sr., provided foster care for 26 children through Professional Parenting.
She was a member of Mount Home Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Whisnant; and brothers, Odell and Billy Breedlove.
Surviving are a son, Eddie Waldrop, Jr. and wife, Darrell Ann, of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Faye W. Powell and husband, Ronald, and Vicky W. Adkins and husband, Larry, all of Morganton; a brother, Don Breedlove of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Dorothy Burnette of Bryson City, and Darlene Corbin of Franklin; grandchildren, Tracy Eller, Kelly Randall, Angel Digh, Ryan Freeman, and Brent Blair; seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, at Mount Home Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating.
Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
