Liston Holcombe
MORGANTON - Liston Holcombe, 79, of 2250 Sunshine Lane, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, in a Burke County Hospice Center.
A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Texie Robinson Holcombe of Burnsville, and the late Cheet Holcombe and the husband of Chloe Blankenship Holcombe, who died in 1996.
He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired carpenter.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sons, William Stanley Holcombe and Ricky Dean Holcombe of Morganton; five sisters, Jennie Penland and Eloise Austin of Burnsville, Grace Deweese of Kannapolis, Mildred Haas and Georgia Ann Sherlin of Arden; one brother, Lester Holcombe of Burnsville and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, of Burnsville.
The Revs. Philip Garland and Marty Bess will officiate.
Burial will be in the Alma Austin Cemetery on Horton Creek, with military grave rites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles McGalliard, Sr.
ICARD - Charles Henry McGalliard, Sr., 66, of Bailey Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital.
Born Sept. 6, 1935, in Burke County, he was a son of Charlsie Evans McGalliard of Hildebran, and the late Charles Worth McGalliard.
He was retired from Huffman Hosiery and was a member of Warlick's Baptist Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Hearn McGalliard and a sister, Rachel McGalliard.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a sister and brother-in-law, Gracie and Richard Watson of Hildebran; a half-sister, Sharon Fieg of Barbenton, Ohio; a half-brother, Rick McGalliard of Barbenton, Ohio; half sisters, Eleanor Potter and Kim McMurray, both of Barbenton, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Cherie and John Sutton of Perry, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Trudy Duckworth of Arizona; daughters, Angel Badcock of Michigan, and Teresa Setzer and her husband, Johnny of Hildebran; a son, Ron Hearn of Washington State; a daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Bobby Moore of Icard; a son, James Hearn McGalliard of Hampton Beach, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law of George Hildebrand; sons, William "Mitch" McGalliard of Icard, and Charles Henry McGalliard, Jr. and Tristram Shandy Denton, both of Morganton, and 24 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, at Warlick's Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gary Murry and Raymond Wilson officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, before the service.

Capt. Stephen Shouppe
MALABAR, Fla. - Capt. Stephen Shouppe, 53, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001.
Born in Morganton, Capt. Shouppe moved to Brevard County, Fla., in 1960.
He was a well-known archeologist and shipwreck historian.
He traveled the world in search of ancient shipwrecks.
He enjoyed traveling and farming at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Thea Shouppe of Malabar, Fla.; four daughters, Julie Clough, Jane Shouppe, Jodie Williams and Nene Shouppe; six sons, Victor, Ruel, Noel, Marlo, Buyett and Stevie; four grandchildren, a brother, Larry; sister, Loretta Urdock; mother, Bertha M. Shouppe; and former wife, Donna Shouppe.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at Victory Christian Center on West Emerson Road, in Palm Bay, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at the center.

CASAR - Brenda Hull Chapman, 55, of 305 Lemon Gap Road, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Tilden 'John' Harris
DREXEL - Tilden Filmore "John" Harris, 94, of Park Avenue, went home to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, surrounded by his loving family and pastor.
Born March 11, 1907, in Caldwell County, he was a son the late Samuel Tilden Harris and Maud Hartley Harris.
Mr. Harris began work at the age of 11, and worked as a fixer at several textile plants in the area until his retirement at age 70.
During his school years, he went to school during the day, and then worked from 3 until 11 at night.
He joined Enon Baptist in 1938, and served the church as a deacon, church treasurer, superintendent of Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher, and an R. A. counselor.
He was also a member of the building and grounds committee, the cemetery committee, the finance committee, the nominating committee, the pulpit committee, the church choir, and at his death was serving as a trustee of Enon Baptist Church.
He served as an R. A. counselor for the Catawba Baptist Association.
Mr. Harris was named Region 8 North Carolina Baptist Layman of the month in 1988 at age 81.
His community service included serving on the Drexel School Board, the Drexel Town Board, and helped organize the Drexel Fair.
He was a charter member and president of the Drexel Lions Club, a charter member and first president of the Huffman Fishing and Hunting Club, and president of the Drexel Community Club.
He was a member of the Senior Citizen Club, and was the Drexel Citizen of the Year in 1984.
Mr. Harris sold most of the land for the Drexel Community Center, the Drexel Primary School and the Drexel Fairgrounds.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph Otto Harris, Stuart Henry Harris, Clifford Harris, Oscar Jacob Harris, Wilmer Leander Harris, and Joseph Samuel Harris; and sisters, Pearl Harris Brinkley and Annie Harris McGalliard.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Donnie Powell Harris of the home; three sons, Cecil P. Harris and his wife, Mary Juan, of Lufkin, Texas, Lamont T. Harris and his wife, Moleta, and Kenneth A. Harris and his wife, Pat, all of Drexel; a daughter, Diann Harris Epley, and her husband, Larry, of Drexel; a half-sister, Lois Harris of Chapel Hill; 13 grandchildren, Chan Harris of New York City, Norm Harris of Arlington, Texas, Pam Richards of Lincolnton, Monty Harris, Donna McGuire, Sheila McKenzie, Michelle Barlowe, Kendra Baker, Kevin Harris, Teresa Setzer, and Regina Hackney, all of Drexel, Kory Harris of Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., and Billy Murphy of Valdese; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, at Enon Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gary Garner and Ernie Richards officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour.

Frank Shuping
MORGANTON - Frank Martin Shuping, 78, of Burkemont Road, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at his residence, following a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 4, 1923, in Burke County, he was the son of the late Russell and Bessie Dale Shuping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Shuping; and brothers, Albert Shuping and Grover Shuping.
He was a member of Burkemont Baptist Church and a retired employee of the City of Morganton.
Mr. Shuping is survived by his wife, Margie Kerley Shuping of the home; a son and his wife, Ned and Roberta Shuping of Morganton; a daughter and her husband, Naomi and Larry McGee of Morganton; a stepdaughter and her husband, Wilda and Gary Herman of Burlington; sisters, Louise Walker and Vergie Carroway, both of Morganton; grandchildren, Jeff Poteet and his wife, Diana, Philip Shuping and his wife, Betty, Andrew Shuping, Fallon Hensley and her husband, Eric, and Lynn Herman and his wife, Lavaine; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Tuesday, at Burkemont Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mark Pridgen and Johnny Tiller officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ray Willie Smith
MORGANTON - Ray Willie Smith, 73, of Buckhorn Tavern Road, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at Grace Hospital following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 1, 1927, in Burke County, he was a son of the late James W. Smith and Mattie Mosteller Smith.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and retired from the military after 20 years of service,
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Delma Cooke Smith of the home; a son, Dudley D. Smith; a step-daughter and her husband, Debbie and Dennis Anthony of Drexel; a special grandson, Kenny Simpson of Drexel; a brother and his wife, Fred and Grace Smith of Maryland.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with Rev. Jimmy Lambert officiating.
Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

Eva Buff
Eva Louise Shuffler Mayfield Buff, 83, a lifelong resident of Burke County, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 3, 1918, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Varrett Shuffler and Ollie Whisnant Shuffler.
She was a member of New Life Assembly Church, and a retired employee of Drexel Furniture Company.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Mayfield and her second husband, Bud Buff; children, Nancy Mayfield, Margaret Mayfield, and Ralph Mayfield; and brothers, Clyde Shuffler and Claudes Shuffler.
Mrs. Buff is survived by sons, Harold Mayfield and Sammy Buff, both of Morganton, and Ned Mayfield of Valdese; a daughter, Jean Norman of Morganton; a sister, Mary Mull of Drexel; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. today in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Colin Deal officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m at the funeral home.

Hazel Haun Clark
MORGANTON - Hazel Haun Clark, 82, of Irish Creek Road, died Satmday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Grace Heights in Morganton, following a period of declining health.
Born May 6, 1919 in Monroe County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Horace Greely Haun and Grace Gardner Haun.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Horace Haun and Glen Haun; and sisters, Opal Tallent and Lillian Wilson.
She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and a retired employee of Firestone Mills in Gastonia.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Richard Clark of the home; a son, Larry Clark and his wife, Patricia of Morganton; a sister, Jena Norman of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandchildren, Steven Richard Clark of Gibsonville, Alan Edward Clark of Marrieta, Ga., and Susan Elaine Smith of Greensboro; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ralph May officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
