Tempie Young

MORGANTON - Tempie Thomas Young, 88, of New Eastwood Circle, formerly of Bakersville, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at Grace Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born April 1, 1913 in Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Carper and Nellie Thomas.
She was a member of the Mine Creek Baptist Church in Bakersville, and attended Morganton First Church of God.
Mrs. Young was a retired employee of Baxter Corporation.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Young; three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by sons, Jack O. Young of Boiling Springs, and Phil Young of Morganton; grandchildren, Donna Farmer and Bryan Young, both of Morganton; and great-grandchildren, Michael Farmer and Alysha Farmer, both of Morganton.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Burke Memorial Park, with the Rev. Don Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Sossoman Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Morganton First Church of God, P.O. Box 1404, Morganton, N.C. 28680, or to the Mine Creek Baptist Church, Mine Creek Road, Bakersville, N.C. 28705.

C. Wayne Perkins

CONNELLY SPRINGS - C. Wayne Perkins, 76, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at Memorial Mission Hospital, Asheville, following many years of declining health.
Born in Burke County, on April 6, 1925, he was a son of the late C. R. Perkins and Maude Stillwell Perkins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Edwin Perkins, Clifford Perkins, and Cecil Perkins and a sister, Hazel Perkins.
Mr. Perkins was a graduate of Valdese High School and attended N.C. State University.
He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater and at Iwo Jima.
He received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement.
Surviving are a brother, John C. Perkins of Morganton; sisters, Kathleen Berry of Rutherford College, Sarah Hill of Laurens, S.C., and Frances Shull and her husband, Dwight of Valdese; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held noon, at Burke Memorial Park, with the Rev. John Herold officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today, at Sossoman Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marjorie McCuen Memorial Center, 101 Lions Way, Black Mountain N.C. 28711.

Betty Mae Hughes

MORGANTON - Betty Mae Hughes, 69, of Lee Loop, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital.
Born in Burnsville, on June 28, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Dallas and Helen Ellis Howell.
Mrs. Hughes was a retired employee of Broughton Hospital and a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Hughes and by a brother, Ellis Howell.
Surviving are a son and his wife, James and Jill Hughes, of Morganton; a daughter and her husband, Janice and David Harwell, of Connelly Springs; a brother, Bud Howell, of Rock Hill, S.C.; sisters, Ruby Buchanan of Newton, Barbara Hall of Black Mountain, and Naomi Benge of Old Fort; grandchildren, Jacob Hughes, Holly Tallent, and Ben Hughes; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, at Solid Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Land officiating.
Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral.
Memorial contributions may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, c/o Dean Buchanan, 3206 W. View St., Valdese, N.C. 28690.

Harriett Setzer

MORGANTON - Mrs. Harriett Bryson Caldwell Setzer, 78, died Monday Nov. 12, 2001 at the Hospice Shytle House in Valdese, after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Setzer was born Dec. 5, 1922 in Haywood County, to the late John and Rebecca Ray Bryson.
She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church and retired from Da-Co. Southern, Inc.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Caldwell and her second husband, Herman Setzer, four brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are a son, Perry Caldwell and his wife, Karen of Vale; a daughter, Karen Fleming and her husband, Joseph of the home; a sister, Dorothy Setzer and her husband, Claude of Waynesville; an adopted son, Johnny Fleming and his wife, Glynis of Morganton; seven grandchildren, Penny Eggers and her husband, Danny, Amy Sigmon, David Sigmon, Joy Fleming, Shelia Fleming, Marie Fleming, and Rebecca Hudson and her husband, Tim; eight great-grandchildren, Anthony Sigmon, Eli Fleming, Faith Fleming, Hanna Eggers, Scott Caldwell, Skylar Hudson, Timmy Hudson, and Tyler Fleming.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at St. John's Baptist Church, with the Revs. Johnny Johnson, James Bumgarner, and Tony Dyson officiating.
Interment will follow in the St. John's Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6:30 p.m., at St. John's Baptist Church.

Hazel Haun Clark

MORGANTON - Hazel Haun Clark, 82, of Irish Creek Road, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Grace Heights in Morganton, following a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., today, at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ralph May officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends today, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, The Burke County Chapter, c/o First Citizens Bank, P.O. Box 560, Rutherford College, N.C. 28671.
Sossoman Funeral Home of Morganton, is assisting the Clark family.

Lennie Edmonson, Jr.

MORGANTON - Lennie Edmonson, Jr., 56, of 1595 N.C. 126, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Grace Hospital, after an automobile accident.
Born Oct. 24, 1945, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Lennie Edmonson, Sr. and Mary Anna Cox Edmonson.
Mr. Edmonson was a former employee of Western Youth Institute and a current employee of Broughton Hospital, resulting in more than 26 years of combined service with the State of North Carolina.
He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam war.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Virginia Bettis Edmonson of the home; brothers, Larry S. Edmonson and Carlton Edmonson, Sr. and his wife, Helen, all of Morganton; sister, Jacqueline E. Turner of Morganton, aunts, Earlene Cox, Vernie Davis, and Laura Thomas and her husband, Tommy L., all of Morganton, great-uncle, Wesley P. Cox and his wife, Emily of Morganton, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and a circle of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Fleming Memorial Chapel at Ebony Funeral Services, with the Revs. Jas. Hemby and W.F. McIntosh, Jr. officiating.
Burial will be held at Olive Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Morganton Chapter 43, P.O. Box 572, Morganton, N.C. 28680-0572.

Katie Rhoney

CONNELLY SPRINGS - Katie Lize Workman Rhoney, 85, of R.R. Farm Road, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Grace Hospital, Morganton, following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 3, 1916, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late John Workman and Zula Ingle Workman.
She was a member of Mull's Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to her parent, she was preceded in death by her husband, A.R. "Tut" Rhoney and by children, Dale, Johnny, Harold, Bob, Neil, and Loretta Rhoney and Ruby Swink.
Surviving are a son, Donald Rhoney and his wife, Caroleen of Vale; a brother, Boge Workman; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Mull's Chapel Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard Adams and Thomas Berry officiating.
Burial will follow in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cooksville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour.
At other times, the family will be at Mrs. Rhoney's home, 5625 R.R. Farm Road.

Wecie Harris

MORGANTON - Wecie Geneva Duckworth Harris, 97, of Randolph Street, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Autumn Care of Drexel.
Born June 2, 1904, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Ora Rockett Duckworth.
Mrs. Harris was a homemaker and a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in Morganton, since 1942, where she taught Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and the G. A. and R. A.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Wilfong Harris; brothers, Oscar Duckworth, Orville Duckworth, Floyd Duckworth, David Duckworth and a sister, Callie Mull.
She is survived by sons, Otis Harris, Jr., Carl Edward Harris and his wife, Diana, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Garold Harris, Francine York, great-grandchildren, Brian York, Jeremy York; brothers, Wilson Duckworth and Richard Duckworth, both of Morganton; sisters, Maudie Cline and Bonnie Epley, both of Morganton.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Raymond Rowland officiating.
Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Carl Harris on Wilson Street in Morganton.
Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Harris family.

Lorine 'Renie' Litaker

GLEN ALPINE - Lorine "Renie" Butler Litaker, 92, of Linville Street, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Park Ridge Hospital, in Fletcher.
Born March 7, 1909, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late William Samuel and Alice Walker Butler.
Mrs. Litaker was a teacher at the Glen Alpine Elementary School for 40 years, and was a faithful member of the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, where she attended the Sarah Pitts Bible Class and the Inspirational Group.
She was a member of the Glen Alpine Women's Club, Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary, the AARP and was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Litaker; brothers, William Earl Butler, James Edward Butler, A. Leon Butler and Charles A. Butler.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Butler Waller of Glen Alpine, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Frank Gordon and Thomas Beall, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Glen Alpine Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Waller.

Merrell McCall

VALDESE - Merrell Sain Norris McCall, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Morganton, after a brief illness.
Mrs. McCall was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Lincoln County, to the late Luico and Hettie Yancey Sain.
Merrell was a member of Valdese First Baptist Church and the Women of the Moose.
She retired from the Waldensian Bakery, Inc., and above all, was a wonderful homemaker and excellent cook.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Elmer Sain and one sister, Ruth Stamey.
Surviving are her husband, Bill McCall of the home; daughters, Judy Jones and her husband, Donald of Valdese, Inita Hennessee and her husband, Bob of Drexel, and Karen Leigh Norris of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Susan Bernard and her husband, Danny of Morganton; stepson, Billy Joe McCall and his wife, Yupah of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Eugene Sain of Welcome; a sister, Melva Piedna of Clearwater, Fla; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, in Valdese, with the Rev. Timothy Horldt officiating.
Interment will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Heritage Funeral Service, in Valdese.
