Nancy J. Simpson
MORGANTON - Nancy J. Chester Simpson, 53, of Antioch Road, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at her residence, after an extended illness.
Born June 13, 1948, in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of Elsie McGee Chester of Morganton, and the late Clarence Chester.
Mrs. Simpson was a very active and faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church in Morganton, and was retired from Bernhardt Furniture plant No. 1 in Lenoir.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Jeff C. Epley and Rodney A. Epley, both of Morganton; three daughters, Lisa Epley Shoun, Debbie Epley Dyson and her husband, Bobby, all of Morganton, and Tina L. Epley of Lenoir; two brothers, Bud Chester of Lenoir, and Kenneth Chester of Morganton; two sisters, Elaine Sweet of Morganton, and Helen Taylor of Lenoir; 10 grandchildren, Taylor Epley, Jason Parker, Angelica Epley, Samantha Epley, Rodney A. Epley, Jr., Brandy Dyson, Michael Dyson, Jonathan Shoun, Wayne Shoun, Jr. and Jarrett Epley.
Funeral services will be held noon Monday, at the Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Burt Wilbur officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Hazel 'Maw' Hall
NEBO - Hazel "Maw" Carver Hall, 72, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at her residence.
Born March 7, 1929, in Cosby, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Jesse L. Carver and Nettie Wells Carver.
She was a retired employee of Drexel Heritage Furnishings in Morganton.
She was also a homemaker and beloved mother and grandmother.
She attended Muddy Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shifley Hall and a great-grandchild, Emma Grace Brittain.
Survivors include a daughter, Louise Hall Edwards of Marion; a son, Charles Hall of Marion; daughters, Brenda Brittain Lingle of Morganton, Linda Hall Boone and Judy Hall Capps, both Nebo; brothers, Frank Carver of Morganton, David Carver of Kernersville, and Clyde Carver of Morganton; a sister, Shirley Conner of Marion; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Westmoreland Chapel with the Revs. Milton Hollifield and Keith Bishop officiating.
Burial will be in the Pinnacle United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

MARION - Lee Ell Hollifield, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, in the McDowell Hospital.
Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Murphy's Chapel Cemetery in Marion, with the Rev. Ray Martin officiating.

Dorothy Humphries
RUTHERFORD COLLEGE - Dorothy Cassels Humphries, 80, died Saturday Nov. 24, 2001, at her residence, after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Humphries was born July 3, 1921 in Rutherford College to the late Rhuben Oscar and Minnie Pearl Franklin Humphries.
She was a member of the Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Valdese Pilot Club, a charter member of the Lovelady Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a past president of the N.C. State Ladies Fire Department Auxiliary and a charter member of the Valdese Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Humphries retired from the Rutherford College Post Office after 25 years of service from 1958 till 1983.
"Dot" also was an Avon representative from 1952 until the present.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Charles "J.C." Humphries; one son, Earl Terry Humphries; five brothers, Norris, Theodore "Ted," Melvin, Ralph and Lee Cassels; and one sister, Catherine Cassels.
Survivors include sons, Larry Humphries and his wife, Alice of Connelly Springs and Johnnie Humphries and his wife, Connie of Rutherford College; a daughter-in-law, Marie B. Humphries of Clayton; a sister, Minnie Belle Cassels of Rutherford College; grandchildren, Mike and Dru Humphries, Janice Kirby, Marion Reid, Jerry and Julie Humphries, Tim Humphries, Rick and Madonna Humphries, and John Humphries; great-grandchildren, Danielle Humphries, Erica Humphries, Jeff Hensley, Jamie and Josh Kirby, Chase Reid, Jessie, Jodie and Jerry Humphries, Jeni and Terry Humphries; and special great-great-grandchildren, Cynthia Hensley and Lindsay Puett.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hamlyn officiating.
Interment will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

GLEN ALPINE - Helen Elizabeth Williams Hutchins, 80, of Allen Street, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001 at Grace Hospital.
Born in McDowell County, on June 9, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Mary Puckridge Williams.
Mrs. Hutchins was a member of Glen Alpine Presbyterian Church, and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Hutchins; sisters, Ruby Williams and Pearl Nichols; and a brother, Ivey Williams.
Surviving are sons and their wives, John and Jennie Hutchins, and David and Edith Hutchins, all of Morganton; a daughter, Margaret Owens of Glen Alpine; brothers, Frank, Fred and Tally Williams, all of Marion, Jack Williams of Nebo, and Lester Williams of Texas; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Faith Tabernacle Church in Marion, with the Rev. Harold Davis officiating.
Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park.

SPRUCE PINE - Mr. Emmett Allen Satterfield, 83, formerly of Marion, died, Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in the Blue Ridge Hospital, Spruce Pine.

Eunice Marie Ervin
DREXEL - Eunice Marie Cuthbertson Ervin, 85, of 307 Oakland Ave., died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Autumn Care of Drexel, after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 30, 1916, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Cuthbertson and Martha Caldwell Cuthbertson.
A retired domestic worker, Mrs. Ervin was also a member of the Bethune Woman's Civic Club and a volunteer for the Burke United Christian Ministries.
She was a member of Shiloh AME Church, where she was a member and former president of the Stewardess Board for 14 years.
She was also a member and former president of the Nina Bess Missionary Society and a former member of the Willing Workers Club at Shiloh AME Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Phifer Ervin, Sr.; brothers, Kirksey Cuthbertson, Charles Edward Cuthbertson, Avery Cuthbertson; sisters, Flossie C. Caldwell, Fannie C. Hunter, Lucille C. Ervin, Mildred N. Cuthbertson, Gladys Cuthbertson and Mary Willie Cuthbertson.
Survivors include her sons, retired Lt. Col. Charles Phifer Ervin, Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla., Danny B. Ervin and his wife, Dottie of Marion, and Kenneth D. Ervin and his wife, Liz of Greensboro; a foster son, Alan Cuthbertson of Greensboro; daughters, Norma E. Caldwell and Flossie E. Bryant and her husband, Elias, all of Morganton, and Carolyn E. Hill of Hackensack, N.J.; a sister, Minnie C. James of Chapel Hill; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces and a circle of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. today, at Shiloh AME Church, with the Revs. Frank W. Saunders, Carol Davis, Charles P. Ervin, III and Herbert Carter officiating.

VALDESE - Mrs. Minnie Hull Young, 90, of Valdese, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at College Pines Nursing Center, after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Young was born May 5, 1911, in Cleveland County, to the late Hosea Benjamin and Mary Bessie Cook Hull.
She was retired from Valdese Mfg. Co., Inc. and was a member of New Covenant Church, Valdese.
She is survived by: her husband, Monroe Young of the home; a daughter, Janet Young of Charlotte; two brothers, Thomas Hull of Valdese and Columbus Hull of Gastonia; two sisters, Golia Lail of Connelly Springs and Zula Parker of Casar; three grandchildren, Charles Taylor and wife Michelle of Conover, Mary Elizabeth Abernethy and Jennifer Lee Abernethy, both of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Taylor and Brendon Taylor.
Graveside services for Mrs. Minnie Hull Young will be at 2 p.m. Friday, in Hillcrest Cemetery, with the Rev. R.A. Brackett officiating.
