Dominick F. Martino

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -­ Dominick Frank Martino, 86, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.
Born Jan. 2, 1914, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was a son of the late John and Chiara Pulice Martino.
He owned and operated a grocery store in Watson, for 22 years.
He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier and worked for the Alcohol Beverage Commission of West Virginia.
At one time, he was a barber.
He was an avid golfer and won many awards.
He taught golf at the Fox Hill Golf Course.
As a kid, his first job was a paper boy and was a caddy at the Fairmont Field Club, while in school.
In his semi-retirement years, he worked for the Times West Virginian.
He attended Watson Grade School and Fairmont Junior High.
He did a lot of writing and kept a daily diary.
He also worked for Johnny Warash as an assistant golf pro.
His favorite sports were golf and fishing.
He served in World War II in the Army with the 201th Infantry from 1941 until 1945.
He served in Alaska, and in the Aleutian Islands.
After being out of the Army for 44 years, he kept in contact with many of his Army buddies all over the country, and had several reunions before he became ill.
He corresponded with them until his death.
He was a life-long member of the St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Watson, and was active in the Holy Name Society, when they had their spaghetti dinners.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Pasco "Peachie" Martino and one sister, Ann Riggi.
Survivors are: his wife, Irene Zaccagnino Martino of Fairmont, whom he married on Nov. 26, 1949; two sons and two daughters-in-law, John and Terri Martino of Morganton, and Michael and Amy Martino of Brookville, Ind.; three brothers, Joe and Frank Martino of Fairmont, and Sammy Martino of Dearborn, Mich.; two sisters, Mary Loria of Fairmont, and Rose Muto of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Tricia, Jona, John Lawrence, Nicholas and Angela Martino.
Friends may call today at the Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave. from 1 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Watson, with Father Gary P. Naegele as Celebrant.
Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont.
A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the Tender Loving Care Home Care & Hospice, 170 Thompson Drive in Bridgeport, W.V. 26330.

Grace Bodford Greene

BURNSVILLE -­ Grace Bodford Greene, 79, of Hunter Street, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Spruce Pine Hospital.
A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Martha McCandless Bodford.
She was a retired textile worker and a member of Windom United Methodist Church.
She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Reid Bodford and Floyd Bodford.
Survivors are: a daughter, Doris McMahan of Morganton; a sister, Hope Matthews of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Alicia Baker of Lenoir; one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, with the Revs. Danny Carr and Williams-Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert 'Bobby' Milam

MORGANTON - Robert "Bobby" Alan Milam, 32, of Zion Road, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, following a brief illness.
Born March 7, 1969, in Weirton, W.Va., he was a son of Colin "Deke" and Anita Jarrell Milam of Arnett, W.Va.
He was an employee of Boyles Furniture Co. in Hickory.
He served with the U.S. Army and was a former member of the 82nd Airborne.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Sharon Barnes Patton Milam of the home; a son, Ethan Beane of the home; a daughter, Falon Milam, of the home; brothers, Colin Milam, Jr. and Jonathan Milam, both of Arnett; sisters, Theresa Milam Ortiz-Medrano of Conover, Linda Harmen and Jennifer Lintz, both of New Haven, W.Va.; his maternal grandfather, James Marshall Jarrell, of Dry Creek, W.Va.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Darrell and Edith Patton Worsham of Morganton; sisters-in-law, Jennifer Ward Bradley, and Michelle Lingerfelt and her husband, Todd; nephews, Joshua Lingerfelt, Troy Harmen, Cory Harmen, Josh Lintz and Charlie Lintz; and nieces, Dana Long, Hailey Smith, Amy Smith, Aurgripinia Ortiz-Medrana and Angelina Hernandez.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brad Coley officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The burial will be held in the Jarrell Family Cemetery, Dry Creek, W.Va.

Jessie Lee Turmire

MORGANTON ­- Mr. Jessie Lee Turnmire, 72, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Valdese General Hospital.
Born Sept 1, 1928, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Ernest G. Turnmire and Fannie Green Turnmire.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Catherine Lane.
As a hobby, Mr. Turnmire enjoyed panning for gold in the local mining sites.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Johnson Turnmire, of the home; two daughters, Joyce Denton and Catana Turnmire, both of Morganton; three brothers, Robert Turnmire of Valdese, Nelson Turnmire of Hickory, and Joe Turnmire of Drexel; one sister, Brenda Davis of Valdese; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, in the Kirksey Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. Interment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., today at the funeral home.
Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton, is serving the Turnmire family.

Charles Robert Lowman

HICKORY - Charles Robert Lowman, 52, of County Line Road, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at the VA Medical Center, Oteen, following a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1949, in Catawba County, Lowman was a son of Rachel Hazel Kiser Lowman and the late Levi D. Lowman.
Mr. Lowman was a retired upholsterer with Century Furniture and a member of Burke Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister Phyllis Ann Lowman.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Janice Philyau Lowman of Lenior; two sons, Charles Ralph Maynard of Hickory, and Tony Randall of Union Grove; a brother, Levi D. Lowman, Jr. and his wife, Frances of Springfield, Va; a sister, Kay Nix and her husband, Danny of Hickory; a number of stepchildren and step-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at Burke Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott Owen officiating.
The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends at the home, where Mr. Lowman will be taken 5 p.m. today.
Burial will take place at Burke Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 48.
Memorials may be made to the Burke Chapel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 120, Icard, N.C. 28666.
Hickory Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl A. Chapman

MORGANTON - Earl A. Chapman, 79, of Enola Road, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Sossoman Funeral Home.

Earl Hildebrand

CONNELLY SPRINGS - Earl Hildebrand, 88, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital.
Born May 16, 1913, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Tildon Hildebrand and Lillie Burns Hildebrand.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hildebrand was also preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Icard Hildebrand; three sons, Virgil, Herman and J.D. Hildebrand; and a number of brothers and sisters.
Mr. Hildebrand was retired from Shufford Mills and was a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Cecil Hildebrand and his wife, Cathy, of Hickory, and Earl Hildebrand, Jr. and his wife, Doris, of Huntsville, Ala.; three daughters, Betty Buff and her husband, Doug, Merita Shuford and her husband, Charles, and Ethel Roberts, all of Connelly Springs; a sister, Thelma Brittian of Hickory; 16 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Mount Hebron Baptist Church, with the Revs. Eric James and Ray Rhymer officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mount Hebron Baptist Church cemetery.
Visitation for the Hildebrand family will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Family Funeral Care, Kirksey Chapel, Valdese, is serving the Hildebrand family.

Patricia Ann Bailey

CONNELLY SPRINGS - Patricia Ann Bailey, 57, of 7591 Sain Ave., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was born May 29, 1944, in Caldwell County, to Mattie Hildebran Bailey of Connelly Springs, and the late Gordon Fate.
She was a retired furniture worker and a member of Clover Baptist Church in Granite Falls.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Bailey Whitener.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include: a son, Michael Bailey of Granite Falls; a sister, Betty Hawn of Hickory; two brothers, William Gordon Bailey and Jerry Robert Bailey, both of Connelly Springs; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Drum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Geouge officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The Bailey family has entrusted arrangements to Drum Funeral Home in Conover.

Eva Louise Self

MORGANTON - Eva Louise Everhart Self, 64, of Air Park Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Morganton.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Sossoman Funeral Home.

Jeanne Holder

MORGANTON - Jeanne Freeman Holder, 67, of Zion Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001 at Grace Hospital from heart problems.
Born Oct. 16, 1933, in Morganton, she was the daughter of the late Frank Freeman and Edna Holland.
She was a graduate of Grant Union High School and American River College in Sacramento, Calif.
She taught at Rio Linda High School and Don Julio, Jr. High School in the Special Educational Department for handicapped students.
She is a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in N. Highlands, Calif.
She served on various committees while she attended church there.
She is survived by her husband, Horace Holder, Jr. of the home and three sons, J. Stephen Holder and Leann of Morganton, and Kenneth D. Holder and his wife, Rosemary of Elk Grove, Calif., and Francis E. Holder of Sacramento, Calif.; and one daughter, Susan L. Knight and her husband, Mark of Antelope, Calif.; two grandsons, Aaron Holder and David Knight; three granddaughters, Angie, Kelly and Naomi.
Her six sisters are as follows: Bertha Epley (deceased), Jettie Causby, Frances Brewer, Doris Garrison, Pearl Norman and Dayle Holland.
Her five brothers are as follows: Charles Holland, Joe Ben Holland (deceased), W.A. Holland, Jr., John Holland and Larry Holland.
W. A. Holland, Sr. (deceased) was her stepfather.
Her body will be cremated by Bass Smith Funeral Home and Crematorium of Hickory.
A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 3 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. Dr. John Mason officiating.
Please no floral contributions, memorials may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 1834 U.S. 70 East.
Family visitation will follow in the church sanctuary.
Bass Smith Funeral Home of Hickory, is assisting the Holder family.
