Dr. Glenn Burris, Sr.
CONCORD -- Glenn Burris, Sr., 74, of 240 Kings Creek Court, Concord, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at First Foursquare Church, 452 Brookwood Ave., at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The Rev. Gary Clouse and the Rev. Glenn Burris, Jr. will officiate.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at the church.
Dr. Glenn C. Burris, Sr. was born in Badin on June 25, 1927.
He was the son of Duncan and Hannah Burris.
He graduated from Albemarle High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately upon graduation.
He served as a personal assistant to Admiral Nimitz.
He also served on the USS Chandelier during World War II.
He came to know the Lord as his personal savior through the ministry of Rev. Ralph Porterfield at the First Foursquare Church after his return from the Navy.
He met and married Garnette Robertson from Mooresville.
They were married on Sept. 18, 1948.
They moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in LIFE Bible College.
They graduated from there in 1952 and moved to Macon, Ga., to take their first pastorate at the Foursquare Church there.
They also pastored churches in Alexander City, Ala., and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
He also pioneered a church in Rock Hill.
They moved to Concord, in 1964.
They pastored there at the First Foursquare Church for 10 years.
In 1974, the International Foursquare Church asked Dr. Burris to become the Southeast District Supervisor for the Ten Southeastern States.
In 1984, the denomination honored Rev. Burris with an Honorary Doctorate degree at Angeles Temple in Los Angeles.
In 1992, Dr. Glenn C. Burris, Sr. retired.
He continued to serve as an assisting minister and elder of the First Foursquare Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Garnette.
Dr. Burris had three sons, Glenn Burris, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, Jeff Burris and his wife, Judy, and Tim Burris and his wife, Kim.
The love of his life were his five grandchildren, Heidi Burris, Joshua Burris and his wife Heather, Zachary Burris, Meredith Burris and Trevor Burris.
Dr. Burris had one surviving brother, Jack Burris, of Albemarle.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who he loved very much.
The family would especially like to thank their neighbors, pastor friends and also their church family from the First Foursquare Church, for all their love during this season.
The family is so grateful for the help of Hospice during Dad's illness, especially Connie and Lisa.
The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, that donations in loving memory of Dr. Glenn C. Burris, Sr. be sent to the Building Fund at First Foursquare Church, 452 Brookwood Avenue, Concord, NC 28025.

Mrs. Luise Klaesson
CONCORD -- Luise Mittenbuhler Klaesson, 98, of 500 Penny Lane (Manor House), Concord, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the Manor House.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at All Saints Episcopal Church, of which she was a member.
The Revs. Fred Hoffman and Dianne Corlett will officiate.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Born Oct. 8, 1902, in Effingham, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Augusta Anglen Mittenbuhler.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed canvas painting and golf.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Majorie M. Greer and a brother, Gene Mittenbuhler.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Phillip Severin Klaesson; and a nephew, John A. Greer and wife Gail of Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church at 525 Lake Concord Road, Concord, NC 28025, or to the Salvation Army of Cabarrus County, at P.O. Box 511, Concord, NC 28026-0511.

Mr. Randy Mullis
LOCUST -- Randy Harwood Mullis, 44, of 221 Smith St., Locust, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at West Stanly Baptist Church Cemetery in Albermarle.
The Rev. Ron Nichols will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland from 7 to 8.
At other times the family will be at the home of his mother, Rose Mullis, at 221 Smith St., Locust.
Born April 23, 1957, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Buddy Allen Mullis.
He was a fixer at the Knotting Mill and a graduate of Central Cabarrus High School.
Survivors include his mother, Rose Ellen Harwood Mullis of Locust; a brother, Danny Allen Mullis of Stanfield; and three sisters, Cindy Sides of Concord, Sherry Shue of Stanfield and Tammy Henderson of Indian Trail.
Memorials may be made to West Stanly Baptist Church Cemetery at 24172 NC 24-27, Albermarle, NC 28002.

Mr. Hubert Powell
KANNAPOLIS -- Mr. Hubert Hague Powell, 87, of 4827 Camp Cabarrus Road, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral was Saturday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, with the Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver officiating.
Burial was in Carolina Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers were Edward Durham, Jr., Thomas Durham, Charles Powell, Max Thomason, III, Thomas Powell, Jr. and Edward Durham, III.
The family received friends Friday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home.
At other times, the family will be at the residence.
Born Sept. 29, 1913, in Caldwell County, N.C., he was the son of the late Hubert Lee Powell and the late Margaret V. Hague Powell.
He retired from Cannon Mills Plant No. 1 after 49 years of service in administration.
He had been active in scouting since 1934 and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
Mr. Powell was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church serving on the executive board and as a long-time teacher of the Men's Bible Class.
He was a former member of the Cabarrus County Board of Education, having served for 18 years and was responsible through the years for modernization and administration improvements within the school system.
He was a graduate of Weaver Junior College and earned his Bachelor's degree from Wofford College.
He was the caretaker, ranger and naturalist at Camp Cabarrus Boy Scout Camp since 1942.
Mr. Powell was an active member of the Winecoff Lions Club for many years, and he was also a member of Gideons International.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Marie Hudspeth Powell, who died in 1981, and two sisters, Mary Ellen Coleman and Martha Powell Coston.
Survivors include two sons, Hubert H. Powell, Jr. of Taylors, S.C., and Dr. Thomas W. Powell of Concord; a daughter, Dr. Mary Ellen Powell Durham of Raleigh; two brothers, Rev. John James Powell of Mill Spring, N.C., and Loren Quincy Powell of Troutman, N.C.; two sisters, Margaret Alice Sims of Harrisburg, and Sarah Leslie Edmiston of Cocoa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Ann Marie Powell Smith, Charles Hague Powell, Edward Joseph Durham, III, Thomas Michael Durham, Thomas W. Powell, Jr. and Leigh Elizabeth Powell and three great-grandchildren, Charles Jordan Powell, Maggie Marie Smith and Crystal Pearly May Powell.
Memorials may be made to NorthEast Medical Center Foundation, 920 Church St. N., Concord, NC 28025, or in the name of Hubert H. Powell (member), James E. West Scholarship Fund, Central NC Council, Albemarle, NC 28001.

Mrs. Ollie Upright
CHINA GROVE -- Ollie Mae Upright, 93, of 290 Madison Road, China Grove, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at the Green Lawn Cemetery.
The Revs. Billy Honeycutt and Horace Moree will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove.
Born Feb. 25, 1908, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Emma Nelly Farrington and the late Robert Phillips.
She was a member of Landis Baptist Church and retried from Cone Mills of Salisbury.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lee Upright, Sr. and two sons, Lee Upright, Jr. and Jerry Max Upright.
Survivors include three daughters, Helen Ruth White and her husband J.V. of Taylorsville, Emma Joeleen Griffin and her husband Bill of Kannapolis, and Sandra Fay Plyler of China Grove; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Rowan Regional Home Health & Hospice at 825A W. Henderson St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

Mr. Jay Barbee, Sr.
CHINA GROVE -- Jay Edward Barbee, Sr. 70, of China Grove, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at West Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Mable Barbee
CONCORD -- Mable Barbee, 71, of Britthaven of Kannapolis, and formerly of 90 Sarah Drive, Concord, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Britthaven of Kannapolis, of natural causes.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The Revs. Clyde Dungee and James Milton, III, will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church Friday.
At other times, they will be at the home of her son at 100 McGill Ave.
Born May 4, 1930, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Mel Alexander and Etta Mahatha Alexander.
She was employed by Cannon Mills, Plant No. 4.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church and served on the Usher Board, was in the Senior Choir and was a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include six daughters, Brenda Wingate of High Point, Catherine Adams of Charlotte, Esther Gilmore of Kannapolis, Paulette Forney, Antionette Gilmore, and Tameka Gilmore, all of Concord; five sons, Willie Gilmore, Aguster Gilmore, Larry Gilmore, Freddie Gilmore, and Ricky Gilmore, all of Concord; three sisters, Margaret Klutz of Kannapolis, Elva Klutz of Concord, and Louise McCauley of Charlotte; one brother, Robert Alexander of New Jersey; 54 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Allie Boyd
KANNAPOLIS -- Allie Dalton Boyd, 91, of 2607 Earle Street, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Big Elm Nursing Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. David Shomake will officiate.
Burial will be at West Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home.
At other times, the family will be at the residence.
Born May 19, 1910, in Carroll County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ruben Dalton and Mary Hendrix Dalton.
She was a retired employee of Cannon Mills Plant 1, number three spinning room.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Marion Boyd; two children, David Lee Thomas and Dorothy Elswick; and a great-great-grandchild, Krystal Goodnight.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Galloway of Rosman and Ellen Henry of Polkton; a son, Lundy Elswick of Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren, including Carolyn Goodnight Hudson, Pam Brown, George Shelton, Sherry Harrington and Debbie Shelton; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Margie Hatley
STANFIELD -- Margie Herrin Hatley, 60, of 4557 Hwy. 200, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Chapel in Midland.
Elder Rom Kerley will officiate.
Burial will be at Hatley's Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Oakboro.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland.
At other times, they will be at the home of a son, Gary Hatley, at 5036 Rushing Road in Stanfield.
Born April 16, 1941, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of Claude M. Herrin and the late Bertha Gheen.
She was a homemaker and a member of Hatley's Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Ervin Hatley of Stanfield; her father and stepmother, Claude M. and Rachel Herrin of Mount Pleasant; three sons, Donnie Hatley and wife Stacy, Gary Hatley and wife Sandy and Ronnie Hatley and wife Alisa, all of Stanfield; a daughter, Teresa Love and husband Robbie of Stanfield; two brothers, Eugene Herrin of Oakboro and Jimmy Ray Herrin of Wilson; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Frances Reid
KANNAPOLIS -- Frances Bowers Krimminger Reid, 88, a resident of Five Oaks Nursing Center and formerly of Jackson Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the nursing center after declining health for a number of years and seriously ill for two weeks.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Carolina Memorial Park.
The Rev. Dean Mitchem will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born May 18, 1913, in Thomasville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Julian Oscar Bowers and Cora Cates Bowers.
Mrs. Reid retired from Cannon Mills Co. and has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Kannapolis since 1927.
She graduated from J.W. Cannon High School in Kannapolis in 1932.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde W. Krimminger and her second husband, Ernest Leroy Reid.
Survivors include a brother, Oscar E. Bowers of Kannapolis; a nephew, Gene Bowers of Kannapolis; and a niece, Cora Lee Shimpock of Thomasville.
Lady's Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
