Mr. Thomas Galloway, Jr.
CONCORD -- Thomas Eugene "Gene" Galloway, Jr. entered this life on February 18, 1924, in Concord, N.C., as the son of the late Thomas E. Galloway, Sr. and Anna Steele Galloway.
On Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, while hospitalized in Cincinnati, where he lived since 2000, God called him home from this earthly life of 77 full and fruitful years to an earned peaceful rest after several years of illness.
Affectionately known as "Gene" by family and friends, he was loved and admired by all for his quiet, subtle sense of humor and gentle disposition.
He enjoyed fishing, photography and geology.
Gene spent his adult life as an educator, leaving a lasting impression on the lives of many hundreds of young people in Concord, where he worked as a science teacher, athletic coach, yearbook advisor and all-around student advisor for more than three decades before and after school busing.
He was especially known for generating an intense interest in science through creating adventurous classroom experiments that got students' attention.
He taught and coached at Logan from the late 1940s to 1968, the year that city schools were integrated, then at Concord, Middle School from 1968, until his retirement in 1982.
Gene was raised in Concord, and graduated from the old Logan High School.
He attended Emmanuel Lutheran College in Greensboro, before leaving school temporarily to defend America's freedom as a soldier in the United States Army in World War II.
Gene served overseas in the European theater in frontline combat from 1943-46.
After the war, he taught for one year in Alabama, before returning home to finish his education at Livingstone College in Salisbury, where he earned a Bachelor's degree.
He went on to receive a Master's at UNCC in 1975.
He and his family were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.
Gene leaves behind, to cherish many loving memories, his wife of 44 years, the former Madeline Chambers; a son, Dr. Marc Thomas Galloway (Dr. Jeannie Galloway) and a grandson, Ryan, all of Cincinnati.
He is also survived by two sisters, Anna Blue (Willie C. Blue) of Hillsborough, N.C. and Mrs. Catherine Robinson of Asbury Park, N.J.; a brother, Fred S. Galloway (Wilhemina Galloway) of Palm Coast, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Norma Howard
KANNAPOLIS -- Norma Chapman Howard, 83, formerly of 315 S. Ridge Ave., Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, following a lengthy illness, at Brian Center in Concord, where she had lived for several years.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The Rev. Tom Cabaniss will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Whitley's Funeral Home.
At other times, they will be at the home of a sister, Vessie Belk, at 118 Suburban Avenue in Kannapolis.
Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Pickens County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Ira T. Chapman Sr. and the late Nancy Wham Chapman.
Following World War II, she was employed by the local police department to modernize the filing system.
This became a permanent position and she was the first female deputy in Kannapolis.
During this time, she became a feature writer as well as book editor for the Daily Independent.
Following her retirement, she was appointed magistrate for Cabarrus County, and filled this post for several years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Kannapolis, and was active in a number of local activities; Little Theater Production; Kannapolis Chapter of the N.C. Symphony; Eastern Star; and various garden and book clubs.
She was an avid golfer with a number of trophies to her credit.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Douglas (Vivian) LeMaster of Howe, Ind., and Mrs. Harold (Vessie) Belk of Kannapolis; a brother, Ira T. Chapman of Charlotte; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dewell (D.T.) Funderburk
KANNAPOLIS -- Dewell Theodore (D.T.) Funderburk, 74, of 302 Glenn Ave., Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at his home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis.
Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The Rev. Curtis Parker will officiate.

Born Sept. 24, 1927, in Union County, he was the son of the late Isaac Theodore Funderburk and the late Cary Melton Funderburk.
He was retired from Fieldcrest Cannon, Inc., Plant 4 Spinning Room.
He also worked part-time at Carolina Mall in the Maintenance Dept.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and usher.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Stacks Funderburk; three daughters, Mrs. Vickie F. Hunsucker, Mrs. Rita F. Harwell and Mrs. Karen F. Tucker, all of Concord; his sister, Hannah Lou Adams of Chesterfield, S.C.; two brothers, Farley Funderburk of Monroe and Norman Funderburk of Lancaster, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Gray
CONCORD -- Mary Lee Krimminger Gray, 90, of 4641 Garden Terrace Drive, Concord, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at West Concord Cemetery.
The Rev. Marvin Honeycutt will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
At other times, the family will be at 4659 Garden Terrace Drive.
Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Wade and Mary Belle Christy Krimminger.
She was retired from Cannon Mills, Plant No. 9 and a member of Westford United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Young Gray, and a son, Leonard Young.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ruth G. Hopkins of Concord; a sister, Ruth Crider of Kannapolis; a brother, William Krimminger of Kannapolis; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Eldridge "Lenny" Henry
KANNAPOLIS -- Eldridge Newton Henry "Lenny", 67, of 2105 Strickland Court, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lakewood Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park in China Grove. The Rev. Robert D. Howard will officiate.

Born June 7, 1934, in Houston, Texas, he was the son of the late Levi Henry and the late Verna Lerlie Thompson Henry. Mr. Henry retired in 1998 from Fieldcrest-Cannon where he worked in the sewing room. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith. He enjoyed fishing. He was also a veteran of Korea, serving in the Navy.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Henry, and a sister, Geneva Hickman.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Jackson Henry of the home; a son, Jackson Henry of China Grove; three daughters, Janette Doolittle of Dunkin, S.C., Shirley Graves of Holly Ridge, N.C., and Linda Sossomon of Kannapolis; two sisters, Lerli Williams and Margaret Goins, both of Texas; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Joyce Somers
RALEIGH -- Joyce Ratliff Somers, 51, of 6121-201 Sunpoint Drive, Raleigh, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh after a short illness.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Shuman will officiate.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Born July 22, 1950, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late S. Ray Ratliff and the late Colleen Hager Ratliff. She had been employed as a social studies teacher at Martin Middle School in Raleigh, and had been teaching since 1972 until the present. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis. Throughout the years, she was actively involved in assisting students active with the N.C. Student Council organization.
Survivors include her sister, Tilda Ratliff of Kannapolis; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mrs. Betty Tucker
NEW LONDON -- Betty Jean Herrin Tucker, 68, of 110 North Oak Street, New London, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle. Burial will follow at Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Chris Hawks and Earl Barringer will officiate.

Born Aug. 17, 1933, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late Ida May Hatley Herrin and Paul William Herrin. She was a retired sewing machine operator from Richfield Manufacturing, where she worked for 28 years. She was educated at Millingport School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyle Duncan Tucker, who died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Iossi and her husband Pete of Spencer; a son, Tommy Tucker and his wife Mickey of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Jewell Efird of Albemarle; a grandson, Michael Cauthen and his wife Crystal of Concord; two great-grandchildren Shane and Breanna Cauthen of Concord; two brothers, Norman Herrin and Rayvon Herrin of Charlotte and extended family members Jackie and Joe Phifer of Matthews.

Mrs. Hazel (Juanita) Wellmon
KANNAPOLIS -- Hazel Ruff Wellmon (Juanita), 73, of 2211 Brookview Ave., Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center after a short illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Revs. Susan German and Gary Sheets will officiate.

Born April 17, 1928, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Lucius M. Ruff Sr. and Etta J. Benfield Ruff. She was employed at Fieldcrest-Cannon, Inc., Plant No. 1, Wash Cloth Dept. for 35 years until her retirement. She was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church and a lifetime resident of the area.
She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Ray Wellmon, and a brother, Ernest Ruff.
Survivors include her husband, James Grady Wellmon; three sons, Gerald Wellmon of Davidson, Douglas Wellmon of Kannapolis, and Christopher Wellmon of Rockwell; a daughter, Jeanne W. Tarlton of China Grove; a brother, Lucius M. Ruff Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Lucille R. Sides of Kannapolis; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Susan Ainsworth
CONCORD -- Susan Zeit Ainsworth, 51, of 3511 Milford Court, Concord, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at her home.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Episcopal Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Fred Hoffman will officiate.
Visitation will follow the memorial service in the Parrish Hall of the church. At other times the family will be at the residence.
Born Feb. 20, 1950, in Opa Locka, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Harry Zeit and the late Phyllis Anderson Zeit. She was employed as president of TSA The Leaders Edge. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners. The Susan Z. Ainsworth Scholarship Fund was established by the National Association of Women Business Owners in her name. Susan was a board member of Cabarrus Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, where she did Leadership Cabarrus.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Philip Ainsworth of the home; son, Jeffrey Ryan Ainsworth and wife Cayce of Concord; daughter, Heather Anne Todd and husband Lee of Concord; three brothers, Steven Zeit of Concord, Fred Zeit of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and John Ely of Laramie, Wyo.; and grandchildren Kieran Taylor Todd, Brody Nicholas Todd and Harry Austin Ainsworth.
