Mrs. Betty Eddleman
CONCORD -- Betty Jean Evans Eddleman, 67, of 295 Broad Drive, Concord, was the daughter of the late Margaret Caldwell Evans and William George Evans. She was born on Nov. 11, 1933 in Concord, North Carolina. Betty departed this life on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Ruby Margaretta Eddleman Thompson.
Betty received her elementary education and secondary education at Logan School in Concord, N.C. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Barber-Scotia College in Concord, and a Masters degree in Education from the North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
Betty devoted her life to educating and counseling young people. She taught in Cabarrus, Stanly and Mecklenburg Counties. She retired from public education as a guidance counselor at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C. After her retirement from the public school system Betty served as Director of the Upward Bound Program at Barber-Scotia College. Betty later became the Vice President of Student Affairs at the college. She also worked diligently with the U.N.C.F. Drive for Barber-Scotia.
Betty worked tirelessly for the community, city, county and state. She received an award for her outstanding community, educational and political service by the Logan Community. Betty was a staunch Democrat all of her life! She served on the Cabarrus County Democratic Board as the Vice President and the secretary for many years. She was the first black elected official in Concord, N.C. She was elected to the Concord School Board of Education for 12 years. After the merging of the system she served 6 additional years on the Cabarrus County School Board of Education. She was the President of the North Carolina State Black Caucus from 1991 to 1994. Betty served as the secretary fro the Eighth District Political Black Caucus in the later years.
Betty was appointed to the Human Relations Council of North Carolina by past Governor Jim Hunt. She was also presented with the Longleaf Pine Award, the highest award given to a citizen by the State of North Carolina.
Betty was a loyal and faithful member of Zion Hill A.M.E. Zion Church. She served 18 years as treasurer of the church, 25 years on the church Trustees board; Deaconess, class leader, life member of the Missionaries, and served on the board of the Church Child Development Center.
Betty Eddleman was a soldier who fought many battles throughout her life. Her latest battle was a personal illness.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Mr. William Eddleman; three devoted children, Ruby Margaretta Eddleman Thompson; William T. Eddleman, Jr. and his wife Cherelle, and Andre L. Eddleman and his wife Genee; two brothers, William "June" Evans and his wife Elease of Concord, and Jerome K. Evans and his wife Naomi of Bessemer, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Kory Thompson, Deon , William III, Caleb, Charity, Bianca, Jasmine , Trinity, Bethany, and Destiny Eddleman, all of Concord; one dear devoted aunt Frances C. Phillips of Charlotte; one dear devoted uncle Franklin Evans of Concord; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church.
Burial will follow at Rutherford Memorial Park.
Dr. Wayne Harris, pastor of Zion Hill A.M.E. Church will be officiating and Rev. Elvin Mickens, pastor of Mt. Calvary church, will be the eulogist.

Mr. Billy Green
GREENSBORO -- Billy Edward Green, 72, of Liberty Drive, Greensboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
Billy was a native of Cabarrus County, but had lived in Greensboro, for close to 50 years.
He worked as a partner with Pulliam and Associates where he served as a CPA.
He was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and was a member of the Greensboro Elks Lodge #602 and a member of Revolution Lodge #552 A.F. & A.M.
Mr. Green was also a U.S. Navy veteran and an avid golfer.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Whitaker of Black Mountain, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Cashion Green.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Street Funeral Home.
No funeral services are scheduled.

Mrs. Caroline Petrea
CONCORD -- Caroline McMahan Petrea, 98, of 470 St. John's Church Rd., Concord, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Transitional Health Care in Kannapolis.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson will officiate.
The family will receive friends after the funeral service at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Petrea was born Dec. 14, 1902, in Oconee County, S.C., the daughter of the late Jesse McMahan and Dora Callas McMahan. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a former Sunday School teacher and Grange member.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Petrea, who died June 29, 1987.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Sara Holcomb of Gastonia and Mrs. Jeanette Overcash of Concord; and a brother, George McMahan of Littleton, N.C.

Mr. Glen Cole
HIGH POINT -- Glen Cole, 81, former resident of 1107 Meadowlawn Ave., died Thursday morning, Nov. 8, 2001, in the Westwood Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Cole was born Jan. 26, 1920, in Simpson County, Miss., a son of Leonard and Nora Roberts Cole.
He had been a resident of High Point, since 1960, and was associated with Cumby Family Funeral Service as an agent for Investors Heritage Life Insurance Company.
A mason, he was a member of the Numa F. Reid 344 A.F. & A.M. and the Oasis Shrine Temple.
Mr. Cole was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
On Feb. 12, 1941, he was married to Louise Winecoft, who preceded him in death on April 8, 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Ms. Sharon Cole Elder of 123 Mayview Ave.; one son, Daryl G. Cole and wife Gail of 104 Brandon Lane, Trinity; four grandchildren; and one brother, Gwen Cole of Clinton, Miss.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church by Pastor John Petry.
Interment will follow in the Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Mrs. Bessie Gray
CONCORD -- Bessie Pless Gray, 91, of 1165 Old Salisbury Road, Concord, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hermon Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Norbert Hahn will officiate.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.
At other times the family will be at her home on Old Salisbury Road.
Born Oct. 23, 1910, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late James Pless and Betty Faggart Pless.
She was a retired pre-boarder at Carol May Hosiery and a member of Mount Hermon Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reckard Gray.
Survivors include three sons, Earl Gray, Frank Gray and Ralph Gray, all of Concord; a sister, Bernice Barrier of Mount Pleasant; a brother, Ray Pless of Cayce, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Julia Linker
KANNAPOLIS -- Julia Mary Gallimore Linker, 81, of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
A private burial will be held Sunday.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Born June 3, 1920, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Smith Gallimore and the late Pearl Byars Gallimore. She was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hunter Linker, and a son, Larry Linker.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Cheek and husband Dean of Kannapolis, and Debra Linker of the home; a son, Eric Linker and wife Kathy of Harrisburg; a brother, John Wilson Gallimore of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kara Goldstein and husband Gregg, Bryan Cheek and wife Janice, Erica Cagle and husband Don, Deana Lewis and husband Aaron, and Ross Linker and wife Heather; and four great-grandchildren, Skylar and Savanna Goldstein and Alexandra and Anna Cheek.

Rev. Dr. William Rush
ELLERBE, N.C. -- The Reverend Dr. William Leon Rush passed to his reward within the altar of God on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at 6:05 a.m.
He was born on June 10, 1940, in Ellerbe, North Carolina, to the late Marvin and Hettie McBride Rush. Following his early education in Richmond County Schools, Dr. Rush received his Bachelor of Theology Degree from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, N.C. in 1977, and a Master of Divinity from Union Christian Bible College in Raleigh, N.C. in 1978. In recognition of his achievements, Union Christian Bible College conferred upon him the Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1979.
With unerring faith in himself and in mankind, he found no job too menial, no task too challenging and no request too insignificant. He was a sincere Minister, a devoted Pastor and a methodical administrator. Yielding to the call, he was Ordained as a Deacon, Oct. 1972, and an Ordained Elder, Oct. 1973. His pastoral labors included the following: St. Mary's A.M.E. Zion Church, Laurel Hill, N.C.; St. Julia A.M.E. Zion Church, Jacksonville, N.C.; Wallace Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Summit, New Jersey; and Savannah and Bessie Chapel Churches, Lilesville, N.C. He also served as Supply Pastor of the following churches: Zion Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Concord, N.C.; Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church, Kannapolis, N.C.; Cottonville A.M.E. Zion Church, Cottonville, N.C.; and Cedar Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Concord, N.C., where he was serving as Interim Pastor at the time of his illness.
Other appointments included: Interim Presiding Elder of the Rockingham District (June 1994); Presiding Elder of the Wadesboro-Monroe District (September 1994); and from 1997 until his death, he served as Presiding Elder of the Concord District. Also, he was employed as Assistant Principal at Ellerbe Junior High School in Ellerbe, N.C. for several years.

Dr. William Leon Rush leaves to cherish his loving and unforgettable memory: a devoted wife, Jeanette Sneed Rush ("my sunshine on a cloudy day"); one daughter, Marvena Denette Rush of Rockingham, N.C.; one son, Derick Keith Rush of Red Cross, N.C.; two brothers, John W. Rush and wife Vystia of Trinity, N.C. and Lacy E. Rush and wife Casey of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Viola Rush-Miller of Austin, Texas, and Yvonne Rush-Wright of Ellerbe, N.C.; two grandsons, DeMarick Thomas and Derick Rush, Jr.; five granddaughters, Marvena A. Rush, Tekisha Thomas, Sherae Quick, Shatisha Bowden and Dominique Rush; five brothers-in-law, Willie McCain, Henry Leak, Alfred Sneed, Sherman Miller and James Sneed; five sisters-in-law, Catherine McCain, Shirlene Leak, Belinda Jones, Evenly Sneed and Otra Womble-Rush; one uncle, Walter Rush of Jersey City, N.J.; four aunts, Stella Rush of Asheboro, Lucy Rush and Charlotte Rush, both of Ellerbe, and Dephane Rush of Jersey City, N.J.; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Brothers Hayes Rush and Marvin Rush, Jr., and sister Mabel Rush Tennione preceded him in death.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellerbe Jr. High School.
Entombment will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Rockingham.

Mr. Carl Anderson
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Carl Elwood Anderson, 83, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001.
He had been ill for two years.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Northwood Funeral Home in West Palm Beach.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Born Dec. 11, 1918, in Cabarrus County, he lived in Kannapolis, N.C., until making his permanent residence in Florida, in 1956.
He was the son of the late Charles Anderson and Ethel Anderson.
He was employed by Cannon Mills in their Sample Department for several years.
He served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in Field Artillery Gunnery in World War II for over four and a half years.
He will be honored with military rites at his funeral.
Survivors include a brother, Edward Anderson of West Palm Beach; a sister, Gladys Deaton of Kannapolis; four nephews and two nieces.
Miss Kathryn Brown
CONCORD -- Kathryn Nichole Brown, 18, of 3226 Hwy. 601, South Concord, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Duke Medical Center.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
At other times the family will be at the home on Hwy 601.
Born July 16, 1983, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of Tony Ray Brown, Sr. of Concord, and Kathryn Jorita Russell Brown of Concord.
She was a 2001 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Craig Steven Brown.
In addition to her parents, survivors include her grandmother, Fannie Elizabeth Brown of Mooresville; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Brown of Concord; and two brothers, Tony Ray Brown, Jr. and Gary Brent Brown, both of Concord.
