Mr. Howard Brewer, Sr.
GREENSBORO -- Howard Nelson Brewer, Sr., 70, of Greensboro, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Brewer will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service, Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave.
Interment, with Masonic Rites, will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
A native of Guilford County, Mr. Brewer was born June 20, 1931, the son of Rupert Nelson and Emma Graham Brewer.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and was employed as an agent by the Nationwide Insurance Company.
He was a member of Magnolia Street Baptist Church, Revolution Lodge #552, and the American Legion.
Survivors include his son H. Nelson Brewer Jr. and his wife Melodie of Garner, NC; daughter Jennifer Brewer Lewis and her husband Chris of Concord, NC; sister Mary Ann Poore of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Robert Brewer, and Piper and Jillian Lewis; nieces Margee Chesson and Deborah Sweezy; and many great-nieces and nephews to whom he was very close.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday.
Memorial donations may be made to Magnolia Street Baptist Church, 1203 Magnolia Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 or to the Masonic Revolution Lodge, 802 16th Street, Greensboro, NC 27405.

Mrs. Freda Burdine
CHARLOTTE -- Freda Beutel Burdine, 78, died Saturday evening, Jan. 12, 2002, at Hunter Woods Nursing Center in Charlotte, following a serious illness and four years of failing health.
Services to celebrate her life will be conducted today at the University Hills Baptist Church in Charlotte.
Officiating at the 2 p.m. rites will be her pastor, Dr. Phillip Martin Young, assisted by Rev. Howard Cobble.
Interment will be at a later date in the Pleasureville Cemetery in Pleasureville, Kentucky.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class of University Hills Church.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Gathering Area of the church.
A native of Henry County, Kentucky, Mrs. Burdine was born Sept. 13, 1923 in Pleasureville.
She was the only daughter of the late Thomas Frederick Beutel and Lola Douglas Beutel and the eldest of three children.
Educated in Henry County schools, she was also a graduate of the Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Louisville.
Mrs. Burdine served as a Registered Nurse for many years in Kentucky, Alaska, North Dakota and Georgia.
She had been a faithful member of the University Hills Baptist Church in Charlotte, since Oct. 11, 1998 and was a member of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.
She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Avondale Estates, Georgia, where she was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class, served as Mission Friends Leader for 20 years, served on the church Library Staff, and was a member of the Saints Alive Choir and was very active in the Round Table Group of the Women's Missionary Union.
She was reared in the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bethlehem, Kentucky.
Mrs. Burdine was the widow of the late Rev. James Theodore Burdine, Jr., who preceded her in death on July 7, 1981.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James William Beutel.
Survivors include her children, Rebecca Jean (Becky) Hutlgren and her husband Ed of Walnut Creek, Calif., Lynda Ann Eller and her husband Jim of Wasilla, Alaska, James Theodore (Jim) Burdine, III and his wife Lynn of St. Paul, Minn., and John William Burdine and his wife Tammi of Charlotte; her younger brother, Bobby Douglas Buetel of Eminence, Kentucky; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Annie Armstrong Missions Fund, c/o University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Road, Charlotte, NC 28213.
McEwen Funeral Service, Derita Chapel is handling the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Steven Hancock
KANNAPOLIS -- Steven Wayne Hancock, 35, of 8810 Dogwood Drive, Kannapolis, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, on arrival at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Death was unexpected.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The Rev. Bennie Burgess will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whitley's Funeral Home.
At other times, they will be at the home of his parents at 8846 Dogwood Drive, Kannapolis.
Born Jan. 24, 1966 in Iredell County, he was the son of Robert M. (Mickey) Hancock and Margie Faye Gulledge Hancock.
He was employed with several sprinkler and construction companies for many years.
He attended South Rowan High School in China Grove, and was a lifetime resident of the area.
In his spare time, he enjoyed being an automotive mechanic.
He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Kannapolis.
n addition to his parents, survivors include his fiance, Caroline Goodnight of Kannapolis; a brother, Darrell Eugene Hancock of Kannapolis; paternal grandmother, Grace Hancock of Kannapolis; two nieces, Amy and Ashley Hancock of Kannapolis; and a nephew, David Hancock of Kannapolis.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, Building Fund, 220 Heintz Ave., Kannapolis, NC 28081.
Whitley's Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Rev. Jack Hill
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -- The Rev. Jack Hill, former pastor at First Baptist Church in Concord, died Monday [Jan. 14, 2002].
Services will be Thursday at 8 p.m. at Hathaway Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made the church of one's choice.
Hill served at First Baptist in Concord, during the late 1960s and late 1970s.

Mr. Ricky Jones
KANNAPOLIS -- Ricky Lee Jones, 43, of 1100 N. Walnut Ave., Kannapolis, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home.
No funeral service is scheduled at this time.
Born Nov. 17, 1958 in Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Claude A. Jones and Jennette Hodge Jones of the home.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his daughter Shannon of Mt. Airy; two sisters, Annette Archer and her husband Bryan of Mt. Pleasant, and Melissa Simmons of Kannapolis; four nephews, Joshua Wood, Robbie Simmons, Chase Archer, and Authum Simmons; numerous aunts and uncles he loves, but the one he spent most of his time with was uncle Arthur Jones; and his childhood friend since third grade, Steve Johnson.
"Ricky's life will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends who love him. You are now with your father, we will miss you more than words could ever say."

Mrs. Janie Litaker
KANNAPOLIS -- Janie McClurd Litaker, 100, a resident of Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis, and formerly of Tuckaseegee Road, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Transitional Health Services.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethpage Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Steven L. Mowery and the Rev. Crawford White will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lady's Funeral Home.
At other times, they will be at their respective homes.
Born April 13, 1901 in Grassy Creek, NC, she was the daughter of the late William R. McClurd and the late Nellie Bryant McClurd.
Mrs. Litaker retired several years ago from the spinning room of Cannon Mills, Plant Four in Kannapolis.
She had lived in this area for 80 years.
Mrs. Litaker was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church of Kannapolis, where she was a member of the Women of the Church, the Mary and Martha Circle and the Upper Room Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Clyde Litaker, who died May 11, 1987; and two granddaughters, Sheila Weiss and Brenda Allison Clancy.
Survivors include two daughters, Margie Allison and her husband Charlie of Concord, and Rudy L. Weiss of Radcliff, Kentucky; two sons, William C. Litaker Jr. and his wife Ann of Hollywood, SC and Harry D. Litaker and his wife Carol of Kannapolis; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Bethpage Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 6020 Mooresville Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to the Coltrane Life Center, 321 Corban Ave. SE, Concord, NC 28025.

Mrs. Osie Little
STANFIELD -- Osie Williams Little, 85, of Stanfield, passed away late Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at her home.
She was born April 24, 1916 in Union County, NC, a daughter of the late Lemuel Williams and the late Dorcus Trull Williams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Wilson Little, on Sept. 2, 1979.
She was also retired from Cannon Mills Company.
Survivors include three sons, Harold Little of Charlotte, Steve Little of Marshville, and Melvin Little of Locust; two daughters, Jean Wetter of Concord, and Helen Ennis of Matthews; one sister, Marjorie Ghant of Waxhaw; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to send a special "thank you" to three very special caregivers, Rita Mullins, Geneva Courtney, and Vivian Norton, for all their wonderful help during their mother's illness.
The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the McEwen Colonial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Harrell, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe.

Mr. Brandon Vaughan
CHINA GROVE -- Brandon Lee-Craig Vaughan, 12, of 76 Central Ave., China Grove, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove.

Mrs. Helen Vernon
CONCORD -- Helen Merrell Vernon passed quietly on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002. She was eighty years old.
Helen touched many lives in her journey from Melrose, New Mexico, Atlanta Georgia, Houston, Texas, Nassau Bahamas, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Fayetteville and finally Concord, N.C.
She worked as a legal secretary and raised her children mostly as a single mother.
She loved politics, crossword puzzles, watching golf and tennis and correcting her children's grammar.
She was quick to laugh, stubborn, and cared about others.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Patricia Ruth Hartner and Teresa Debra Boyes, both of Missoula, Montana; her son, Joseph of Concord; her brother, Joseph Merrell of Twinsburg, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
If you knew her and knew her well, you probably loved her very much.

Mrs. Lillian Arthur
CONCORD -- Lillian Frank Simpson Arthur, 97, of 2173 Mulberry Road, Concord, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Transitional Health Care.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel.
A private burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
Dr. Michael D. Kurtz will officiate.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Born April 27, 1904, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Mary Mills Simpson.
She was a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Arthur was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Banks Arthur, who died in 1986.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a nephew, James Shinn of Concord; and a great-niece, Angela Lewis of Concord.
Memorials may be made to Forest Hill United Methodist Church, 265 Union Street North, Concord, NC 28025.
