Mr. Albert Marlowe
KANNAPOLIS — Albert Lee Marlowe, 88, of 335 Chestnut Ave., Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Faith Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. James Pauley will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Whitley's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home on Chestnut Ave.
Born Feb. 9, 1913, in Iredell County, he was the son of the late David Marlowe and Sally Moore Marlowe. He was retired from Cannon Mills Co., Plant #6 Weave Room after 50 years. He was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Mr. Marlowe was preceded in death by a son, Donald Marlowe.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Marlowe; a son, Tyrone Wayne Marlowe of Kannapolis; a daughter, Sylvia D. Woodard of Kannapolis; two sisters, Faye Sigmon of Mooresville and Bobbi Spencer of Cleveland, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great--grandchildren; and eight great--great--grandchildren.

Mrs. Hallie Owensby
KANNAPOLIS — Hallie May Davis Owensby, 82, of 3095 Centergrove Road, Kannapolis, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center after seven months of declining health.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Whitley's Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Curtis Parker and Keith Allen will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Whitley's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home on Centergrove Road.
Born July 27, 1919, in Chesterfield County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Weldon Davis and Matilda Hurst Davis. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and worked for Cannon Mills Co., Plant #1, Sheet Department and as a Warp Counter for over 40 years until her retirement. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, and an avid seamstress and reader. Mrs. Owensby was a well-educated woman and a great day care assistant. She was very protective of her family and she was a loving mother and grandmother who had a great love for her family.
Mrs. Owensby was preceded in death by two brothers, Weldon L. Davis and Bert C. Davis.
Survivors include two loving daughters, Sharon Wingler and her husband Leonard and Brenda Wood and her late husband Curtis V. Wood Sr., all of Kannapolis; seven grandchildren, Kelly E. Ledbetter and husband Billy, Donna Robie and husband Danny, Tracy Tyson and husband Wayne, Michael Wingler and wife Sheri, Brian Wingler and wife Michele, Curtis V. Wood Jr. and wife Catherine, and Kevin Wingler and wife April; 10 great--grandchildren, Meredith Miller, Ashley Tyson, David Tyson, Blake Wingler, Joshua Wingler, Matthew Robie, Brantlee Wingler, Brenden Tyson, Keethen L. Wood, and Justin Wingler; one great--great--granddaughter, Madison Miller; and a number of nieces and nephews.

CONCORD — Mary Coleman Gaskey Smith, 78, of 2137 Barr Road, Concord, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
A private graveside service will be held today at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Revs. Wade Abercrombie and Todd Marlow will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Odell Baptist Church. At other times, they will be at the home of a son, Clyde Gaskey, at 4578 Orphanage Road, Concord.
Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late W.L. Coleman and Cora Springer Coleman. She was a lifetime resident of Cabarrus County and a member of Odell Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Clyde Gaskey and his wife Kathy, Mark Gaskey and his wife Cathy, and Neil Smith and his wife Teresa, all of Concord; three grandchildren, Chad Gaskey, Kevin Gaskey, and Beth Gaskey, all of Concord; four step--grandchildren, Derrick Wiser, Jessica Wiser, Dustin Wiser, and Jonina Wiser, all of Concord; four brothers, Pete Coleman, Bob Coleman, Bill Coleman, and W.L. (Dub) Coleman, all of Concord; five sisters, Virginia Beaver, Ruth Austin, Mae Blackwelder, Faye Tucker, and Martha Earnhardt, all of Concord; and one step--great--grandson, Kristopher Martin of Concord.

Mrs. Virginia Campbell
KANNAPOLIS -- Virginia Davis Campbell, 73, of 1368 Amanda Drive, Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Floyd Memorial Chapel in Lumberton. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery. The Rev. Jimmy Tatum will officiate.
The family received friends Friday at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, Inc.
Born in Robeson County, she was the daughter of the late George and Effer Davis. She was a retired textile worker.
Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Campbell; two sons, Bobby Ray and James Donald Campbell; two brothers, Jimmy and Earnest Lewis; and a sister, Florence Willis.
Survivors include four sons, Tommy Campbell of Kannapolis, Ecil Campbell of China Grove, Stephen T. Campbell of Badin, and Kenneth Lewis of Lumberton; five daughters, Clydia Ann Whitley and Bobbie Biggerstaff, both of Kannapolis, Betty Jean Long of Roxboro, Vicky Campbell of Landis, and Penny L. Rhodes of Lumberton; a brother, Rudolph Lewis of Lumberton; a sister, Libby Taylor of Lumberton; 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jerry Cross
SALISBURY -- Jerry Lee Cross, 39, of 1213 S. Main Street, Salisbury (Granite Quarry), died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, on arrival at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord, as the result of an automobile accident.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in Chain Grove. The Rev. Harvey Parnell will officiate.

Born Feb. 23, 1962 in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Carl Cross Jr. and Gloria Thomas Cross. He was employed with Waffle House in Concord, and prior to that with Pillowtex Corp., Plant 1, Towel Sewing Department for many years. He was a resident of the Cabarrus/Rowan area.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cross is survived by a son, Jeremy Lee Cross of Salisbury; a brother, Ricky Junior Cross of Salisbury; a sister, Vicky Cross Key of Rockwell; his ex-wife, Lori S. Cross of Kannapolis; and his girlfriend, Pamela S. Moose of Kannapolis.

Mrs. Mary Witherspoon
CONCORD -- Mary Louise McCurdy Witherspoon, 81, of 97 Milton Ave. NE, Concord, was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, after a year and a half of declining health.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Howell's Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Pat Hayes of Baton Rouge, La. will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service Sunday.
Born Aug. 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William Norton McCurdy and Theodocia Earnest Bost McCurdy. She was retired from Duff-Norton, a division of Perfecting Services in Charlotte.
Mrs. Witherspoon was preceded in death by her husband, Omar Kenneth Witherspoon of Alliance, Ohio.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann Witherspoon Picard and her fiance A.C. Seamon Jr. of Concord; a step-daughter, Lois Schott of Alliance, Ohio; her aunt, Mary Bost Allman; and a number of cousins. Also missing her are her beloved pets, "Buttons" and "Max."

Mr. B.J. Fortson
KANNAPOLIS -- Bethune Jackson (B.J.) Fortson, 78, of 1301 Mount Vernon Ave., Kannapolis, and formerly of 1202 Oakwood Ave., Kannapolis, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at his home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shadybrook Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Charlie Littlejohn will officiate. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service at the church. Military services will be conducted at the grave by the D.A.V.

Born Nov. 30, 1923, in Madison County, Ga., he was the son of the late King David Fortson Sr. and Birdie May Carrithers Fortson. B.J. was a member of Shadybrook Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon of the church and in his earlier years was a Sunday School teacher. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the Army. He was a member of the Poston Perkins Post 8989 VFW. He retired from Cannon Mills where he worked in the plant #1 shop.
Mr. Fortson was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Ruff Fortson, who died Jan. 9, 1983.
Survivors include his daughter, Diane F. Gunden and husband Jackie of Kannapolis; two grandsons, Brian Gunden and wife Kelly and Christopher Gunden, all of Kannapolis; a brother, King David Fortson of Kannapolis; and two sisters, Sara F. Adams of Danielsville, Ga., and Edna F. Murphy of Louisiana.

Born in Cabarrus County, he was the son of John Earl Galloway and Stacy Buder Galloway.

CONCORD -- Betty Hayes Mobley, 68, of 201 Booker Drive, Concord, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center after being seriously ill for two months.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sandy Ridge A.M.E. Zion Church in Landis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bobby L. Smith, pastor, will officiate.
The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sandy Ridge A.M.E. Zion Church in Landis. At other times, they will be at the home of her daughter, Peggy Holt, at 3725 Hwy 152 in Salisbury.
Born Sept. 14, 1933, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Kathleen Smart Hayes. She attended the public schools of Cabarrus County and was a retired nursing assistant. She was a member of Sandy Ridge A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board, Parent Body Missionary, Lay Council, Board #2, and Kitchen Committee.
Mrs. Mobley was preceded in death by her husband, Major Mobley, who died in 1973.
Survivors include her step-son, Major Eugene Burton of Kannapolis; a daughter, Peggy Hayes Holt and her husband Johnny of Salisbury; her brother, Felix Hayes Jr. of Concord; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Harley H. Moore.
