KANNAPOLIS -- Sadie Watkins Carr, 84, of 327 Esther Circle, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Albert Mases will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte.
Born March 22, 1917, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of Dr. F.H. and Lytle Watkins. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorthy L. Carr McKennie.
Survivors include a brother, Harold L. Watkins of Kannapolis.
Mrs. Inez Compton
KANNAPOLIS -- Inez Arnold Compton, 87, of Caremoor Retirement Center in Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m., today at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Willie Rash will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 today at the funeral home.
Born Dec. 16, 1914, in Gordon County, GA., she was the daughter of the late John and Arie Greenway Arnold. She worked at Cannon Mills Co. for 40 years as a stretcher until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph "Doc" M. Compton; her son, R. Glenn Compton; and a brother Homer E. Arnold.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis C. Strickland and her husband Jimmy of Kannapolis; one son, H. David Compton and wife Dianne P. Compton of Kannapolis; three grandchildren, Lisa S. Newman and her husband Chris, H. David Compton Jr. and wife Kerry, Amy C. Nicodemus and husband Todd; and one great-grandchild, Hunter D. Nicodemus.
Mrs. Lanas Cooke
CONCORD -- Lanas Tucker Rodgers Cooke, or 215 Goodman Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. The Rev. David Myers and the Rev. Coy Privette will officiate. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at their respective residences.
Born in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Maude Hartsell Tucker. She was a beautician who formerly owned and operated Circle Beauty Shop. She was a very active member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church and was the director of Helping Hands Ministry in Landis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, William Harvey Rodgers and Conred Ray Cooke; a daughter, Sherry Rodgers Smith; and a son, William Barry Rodgers.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sandra Cooke Craft of Kannapolis; four grandchildren, Leslie Rodgers Griffin, William Anthony "Andy" Rodgers, William Jerrod Smith and Edward Craig Stancil; a sister-in-law, Colleen Cook; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Etta Furr
LOCUST -- Etta Frances Hall Furr, 87, of 111 Jenkins St., Locust, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Britthaven of Piedmont.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mill Grove United Methodist Church in Midland. Burial will follow at Mill Grove United Methodist Cemetery. The Rev. Arval Rushing and Dr. Kinney Wallace will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, they will be at the home at 111 Jenkins St. Locust.
Born Feb. 14, 1914, in St. Cloud Fla., she was the daughter of the late William Clarence and Maude Lee Hulin Hall. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Locust.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey Dewitt Furr and a son Lowery Dewey Furr.
Survivors include, two sons, Jan Furr of Locust, and Bill Furr of Mint Hill, two daughters, Betty Furr Hartsell of Locust, and Sylvia F. Bowers of Stanfield, two sisters, Ruth H. Almond of Albemarle, and Lucille H. Furr of Albemarle, 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Reice Gatton
KANNAPOLIS -- Reice S. Gatton Sr., 86, formerly of 2207 Brantley Road, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Lake Taylor Hospital in Norfolk, Va. He had been ill for five weeks.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Kannapolis. The Rev. Tim Jernigan will officiate. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Whitley's Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 11, 1915, in Davie County, he was the son of the late James Louico and Minnie Jackson Gatton. He was formerly employed with General Motors in Indianapolis, Ind. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Kannapolis, and was a long-time resident of the area.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Little Gatton.
Survivors include three daughters, Lona Liosatos of Virginia Beach, Va., Martha Shannon of Cape May, N.J. and Gail Mase of Coral Gables, Fla.; one son, Reice S. Gatton Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; three sisters, Evelyn Sloop and Martha Austin, both of Kannapolis, and Edna Edwards of Pittsboro; one brother, Max Gatton of Kannapolis; two stepdaughters, Betty Benson and Nancy Yates, both of Kannapolis; one stepson, George Ingram of Kannapolis; three grandchildren, Kevin Mase of Coral Gables, Fla., Jeff Mase of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Lona Thibodeau of Virginia Beach, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Kara and Lindsay Mase; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Margaret Kirby
CONCORD -- Margaret Eudy Kirby, 102, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at GreenLawn Cemetery in China Grove. The Rev. Tom Anderson will officiate.
Born November 26, 1899, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late I.P. and Martha Tucker Eudy. She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Kirby.
Survivors include two sisters, Ming Hill of Nashville, Tenn. and Erma Readling of Concord; one brother, Bill Eudy of Concord; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Martha Nantz
KANNAPOLIS -- Martha Reaby Water Nantz, 96, of Universal Healthcare in Concord, formerly of Rainbow Drive, Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Universal Healthcare.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. today, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Rev. Charles B. MacMurphy will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at their homes.
Born Oct. 28, 1905, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Martha Correll Walter. She worked at Cannon Mills Co. plant one, in the sheet dept. until her retirement. She was employed with Cannon Mills for 43 years. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell F. Nantz, who died Sept. 26, 1957.
Survivors include, two daughters, Mary Lee Towell of Charlotte, and Eva Mae Fortner of Kannapolis, one sister, Irene Walter of China Grove, one granddaughter, Chellyn T. Dulin and husband Wally of Charlotte, two great-grandsons, Russell Dulin and his wife, Lori of Oakboro and Brian Dulin of Charlotte.

Mr. Ralph Ritchie
KANNAPOLIS -- Ralph Dearmon Ritchie, of 404 Locust St., died Friday, February 1, 2002, at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel in Concord. The Rev. Johnny Canup and the Rev. Carl Howard will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord.

Born September 20, 1924, in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Ora Tarlton Ritchie. He was a self employed carpenter and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church in Harrisburg.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Irene Lambert Ritchie of Kannapolis; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Charles Tate
CONCORD -- Charles Edward Tate, 81, of 1200 Cox Mill Road, died Friday, February 1, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury. He had been in declining health for five years.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Parkwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Darrell Coble and the Rev. Steve Davis will officiate. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

Born March 10, 1920, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late David Julius and Cordelia Stamey Tate. He was a road construction superintendent at C.G. Tate Construction in Concord. We was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of Parkwood Baptist Church and the N.C. Men's Baptist Disaster Relief Association.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, John Michael Thomas II.
Survivors include his wife, Frances McGinnis Tate of the home; two sons, David Franklin Tate and wife Janice Almond Tate of Concord, and Charles Edward Tate II of Bessemer City; a daughter, Kay Thomas and husband John M. Thomas of Concord; a brother, James P. Tate of Bessemer City; two sisters, Violet Anthony and Joan Snipes of Lincolnton; three granddaughters, Ashley Dupont and husband Eric, April Jennings and Katelyhn Isabelle Tate; a grandson, Cody Edison Tate; and two great-grandchildren, Grace Ann Dupont and Rylan Nichole Jennings.

Mrs. Vera Young
OHIO -- Vera M. Young, 72, of Parkman Township, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital in Claridon Township.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service in Ohio. Pastor Brad Winkler of Willo-Hill Baptist Church in Willoughby, Ohio will officiate. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in W. Farmington.

Born April 289, 1929, in Casey, Iowa, she was the daughter of William F. and Elgena (Edson) Shingler. She had been a resident of W. Farmington, Ohio since 1956. She had formerly worked at Johnson Rubber, Middlefield Plastics and Scientific First and had retired from Geauga County Home in 1992 at the age of 62.
Her hobbies included gardening and farming and she belonged to the Greasy Hubs Square Dance Club. She graduated from W. Farmington High School and from Trumbull Business College. She was a member of Phythian Sisters and West Farmington Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, William R. Shingler.
Survivors include her husband Keith, whom she married on May 22, 1948, in W. Farmington; five sons, Karl Young and wife Melanie of Stanfield, Keith Young and wife Evie of Concord, Kevin Young of Chardon, Ohio, Kirk Young and wife Lucinda of Parkman and Kent Young of Bristolville; two daughters, Kathleen Young of Newton Falls and Karolyn Miller and husband John of Middlefield; a brother, Donald Shingler of Champion; a sister, Donna Fiest and husband Norman of Fowler, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
