Mr. Boyd Fletcher
KANNAPOLIS -- Boyd Wilson Fletcher, 84, of Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Universal Health Care in Concord.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday night at Whitley's Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 30, 1917, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Fletcher was the son of the late John James Fletcher and the late Mary Clark Fletcher. In earlier years, he was employed with Cannon Mills and later, with the U.S. Army National Guard in Salisbury, until his retirement in 1977. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was active with the W.J. Bullock Sunday School Bible Class and served as treasurer for many years. He was in charge of awards at the Cabarrus County Senior Games where he was active in state and national finals. He was a devoted fan of Duke University sports and the New York Yankees. He played softball for 49 years and bowled for 65 years. Mr. Fletcher was inducted into the National Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed greatly by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Rogers Fletcher; two daughters, Cynthia Fletcher Petrea of Kannapolis, and Pamela Fletcher Kerr of Charlotte; one son, Gregory Boyd Fletcher of Kannapolis; two sisters, Mildred Thomas of Concord, and Isabelle Allman of Mount Pleasant; six grandchildren; Jason Petrea of Kannapolis, Wesley Petrea of Wilmington, Crystal Petrea of Landis, Randy Petrea of Spartanburg, Jennifer Kerr Spear of Indian Trail, Christopher Kerr of Charlotte, and three great-grandchildren, Carter Spear of Indian Trail, and Erin and Ryan Petrea of Spartanburg.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 416 East First St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28083.

Mrs. Lurlene Freeman
CONCORD -- Lurlene McKeever Freeman, 88, of 255 Georgia St. S.W., Concord, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at NorthEast Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rutherford Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. James D. Graham will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 Friday morning at the church. At other times, they will be at the home.
Born June 6, 1913, in Madison County, Georgia, Mrs. Freeman was the daughter of the late Robert McKeever and Penni Ina McKeever. She was a charter member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, mother of the church deaconess, member of the senior choir and the Pastor's Aid Society. She was a missionary, Multiple Sclerosis Coordinator and a member of the P.T.A. of Logan School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Freeman, who died Feb. 15, 1995.
Survivors include four daughters, Jimmie F. Wallace of Atlantic City, N.J., Erma Jean McGimpse of Morganton, Adelle F. Hough, Peggy Ann F. Fleming and Lurlene F. Walk, all of Concord; one sister, Louise M. Echols of Danielsville, Georgia, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Joseph Love
MIDLAND -- Joseph Elliott Love, 39, of 11420 Bethel Church Rd., Midland, died Sunday May 5, 2002.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Bellefonte Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Dr. Gregory Davis will officiate.
The family will receive friends during a quiet hour from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the church.
Born Oct. 11, 1962, in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. and Ruthelma Govan Love of Midland.
Survivors include one sister, Alfreda and her husband Israel Murphy of Charlotte; three brothers, Eric and his wife Vanessa Love of Charlotte, Deric and his wife Rita Love of Davidson, and James Avery Love of Midland; six nephews; three nieces; one great-niece and a host of other relatives.

Mrs. Emma Nesbit
CONCORD -- Emma McClure Nesbit, 98, of 430 Brookwood Ave. and formerly of 302 Melrose Drive, died on Monday, May 6, 2002, at Universal Health Care in Concord. She had declining health for four years.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at First United Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Rutherford Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Clawson will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times, they will be at the home of her sister, Louise Roseman, at 312 Melrose Drive SW, Concord.
Born April 13, 1904, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late James McClure and Hattie McClure. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, the usher board and the missionary society.
Mrs. Nesbit was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nesbit, who died in May of 1993.
Survivors include two step-sons, Frank Nesbit, Jr. and Willie Nesbit, both of Concord, N.C.; a step-daughter, Janie Tillman of Toledo, Ohio; a sister, Louise Roseman of Concord, N.C.; a nephew, Jason McClure of Concord, and one grandson Charlie Nesbit of Toledo, Ohio, both of whom she reared; two great-nieces, Carlvenus Russell Abaoag of Charlotte, N.C. and Dora Crumblin of Kannapolis, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
Clark Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Louise Rogers
KANNAPOLIS -- Violet Louise Woodward Rogers, 88, of 1212 Belair Ave., Kannapolis, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Genesis Eldercare in Mooresville.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Don Shuman and Mrs. Sarah Weaver will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Whitley's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home on Belair Ave.
Born June 5, 1913, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Ford Woodward and the late Ellen Loutisha Athey Woodward. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and active in other various activities in her earlier years. She was retired from Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1 Weave Room and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge 168. She had been in the care of her great niece, Sandra McCurdy, for the past year.
Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Rogers.
Survivors include seven nieces, Helen Wyrick, Anne Earl, Esther Ingram, Claudia Daves, Audrey Collins, Dorthea Overcash, and Ariel Furr, all of Kannapolis; and several great nieces and nephews.
Whitley's Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Infant York
LIBERTY -- Infant Madison Jean York, of 1727 Smith Adkin Road, Liberty, N.C., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at her home.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Edward Troy Brown will officiate.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. today at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C. At other times, they will be at the home on Smith Adkins Rd.
Miss Madison York was born in Randolph County on February 15, 2002.
Survivors include her parents, Christopher James and Christy Lee Edmondson York; a sister, Maranda Leann York of the home; grandparents, Eddie and Clara Edmondson of Franklinville; grandparents, Kenneth and Joyce York of Liberty; great- grandparents, Clarence and Velma Woodell of Asheboro; great- grandparents, Ruth and Glenn Harshman of Shallotte, N.C.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C., is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Lorene Young
CHARLOTTE -- Lorene Wyatt Young, 88, passed away on May 7, 2002 at Sardis Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte.
Mrs. Young was born December 14, 1913 in Cabarrus County, NC, the daughter of Chalmus Walter and Maie Hartman Wyatt. She attended Cabarrus County Schools and graduated from Rowan General Hospital School of Nursing in Salisbury, NC where she began her career as a Registered Nurse working in the hospital and also as a private duty nurse. Mrs. Young married Donald Wayne Young on July 26, 1935; they lived in Salisbury, NC, and Greenville, SC, during their 47 years of marriage. Mrs. Young was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC, and during her years there, was an active member of WELCA of St. John's Lutheran Church. Her primary concerns in this life were her church and her family.
A service to celebrate the life of Lorene Wyatt Young will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2002 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury, NC, with the Reverend Jennifer M. Ginn, the Reverend John Tucker and the Reverend James Bartos officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Narthex of St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Rowan Memorial Park.
Survivors include son, Philip D. Young and his wife, Vernelle of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters, Cassandra Y. Stilwell and her husband, Lee of Charlotte, NC, and Michelle Young of Liberty, SC: step-grandchildren, Donna Ellington of Garner, NC and Jeffrey Williams of Monroe, NC; three great-grandchildren, Tori and Jacquelyn Stilwell and Jared Young; her sister, Cora Lee Lowder of Mt. Pleasant, NC, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wayne Young, her son, Donnie Young; her parents; brothers, Hayden Wyatt, Doyt Wyatt and Harry Wyatt; and sister, Freeda Wyatt Drye.

Mr. Charlie Williams
CONCORD -- Charles "Charlie" James Williams, Sr., 80, of 587 Union St. S. Concord, died Monday, May 13, 2002 at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church. Father James Geiger, Father Edward Gray and Deacon Dan Carl will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers are members Knights of Columbus.
Prayer service at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation will follow service until 8:30 p.m. at Wilkinson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at home, 587 Union St. S. Concord.
Born Jan. 28, 1922 in Spencer, NC the son of the late James B. and Rosa Boulus Williams. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a founding organizer of St. James Barbecue, 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of US Army WWII, charter member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27, VFW Post 6484, past Commander, State Historian, Member of American Legion Post 51, past chairman of DAV convention when held in Concord.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Taffy Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sarah Kannon Williams; one daughter, Sister Paulette R. Williams, Sisters of Mercy of Charlotte; one son, Col. retired Charles J. Williams, Jr. and wife Brenda of Concord; one sister Mary W. Davis of Concord; one brother, Tommie J. Williams and wife Lorraine of Concord; two grandchildren, Charles Williams, III and wife Mikki, Michelle Lopez and husband John.
Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 25 Elm Ave. NW, Concord, NC 28025 or Sisters of Mercy, 101 Mercy Dr., Belmont, NC 28012.

Mrs. Jean Weems Pearce Bennett
RALEIGH -- Jean Weems Pearce Bennett, a native of Raleigh, N.C., and graduate of Needham Broughton High School, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2002.
The funeral well be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Street Chapel of Brown Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at Brown Wynne Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
She was the daughter of the late William G. and Emily J. Weems, of Raleigh. She was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister who cherished books, flowers and her family. "Aunt Jean" was a lifelong organizer of fun for family and friends. Her home was always a gathering place for those she unselfishly loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Marvin Pearce, of Wendell.
Survivors include her son, Kyle Richardson Pearce and daughter-in-law Alice, of Kannapolis; daughter Kimberly Pearce Parker and son-in-law Richard, of Prescott, Ariz.; grandchildren, Kelly Ryan Pearce and Kevin Hunter Pearce; sisters, Patricia Weems Yarborough, Joan Weems Edge and Ellen Weems Glenn; brothers-in-law, James Edge and John Yarborough; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all.

Mrs. Mary Clark
CHARLOTTE -- Mrs. Mary Underwood Clark, 90, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 13, 2002 at Mecklenburg Health Care.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16 in the Hankins and Whittington Dilworth Chapel with the Reverend Michael Cummings officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A service of committal will follow at 3 p.m. Thursday in Bonlee Cemetery in Siler City, with visitation to follow in the Bonlee Baptist Church.
Born January 10, 1912 in Sampson County, NC, Mrs. Clark was a daughter of the late William J. and Blanche Johnson Underwood. Following graduation from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, she taught school 30 years at Bonlee School and Siler City Elementary School.
Mrs. Clark was a member of First Baptist Church of Charlotte, as well as the church's Fun Monday Craft Group and Sarah Sunday School Class and was a former member and Sunday School teacher at Bonlee Baptist Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed painting, needlework, and various other crafts.
Survivors include two daughters, Julia C. Emerson and husband, Bill, of Charlotte and Frances C. Lee and husband, Ed, of Kannapolis; three sons, Willard J. Clark, Jr. of Burlington, John R. Clark and wife, Kay, of Goldston, and Robert A. Clark and wife Susan, of Oak Island; a sister, Julia P. Herring of Roseboro; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Willard J. Clark, and a brother, Alton C. Underwood, preceded her in death.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the nurses and nurses assistants at Mecklenburg Health Care.
