Russell L. Hollowell, 88; co-owner of beach motel
Russell L. Hollowell, 88, Atlantic Beach, died Saturday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Munden Funeral Chapel in Morehead City.
A farmer from Wayne County, Mr. Hollowell served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a manager of Belk stores in Goldsboro, Tarboro and Plymouth. He was the co-owner of Hollowell's Motel in Atlantic Beach.
He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Hollowell, of the home; a daughter, Jolene H. McCann of Morehead City; a son, Gene Hollowell of Atlantic Beach; a sister, Margie Clark of Tarboro; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ray Hollowell.

Mary Ruth McKenzie, 80; funeral set for Monday
Mary Ruth Gilbert McKenzie, 80, Salter Path, died Friday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Enka, with the Rev. J.C. Parker officiating.
She was born in Madison County and had been a resident of Asheville for most of her life.
She is survived by her husband, C. Russell McKenzie, of the home.

Ruth Goodwin, Cedar Island; funeral set for Tuesday
Ruth Lupton Goodwin, 84, Cedar Island, died June 12 at Sea Level Extended Care Facility. \
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrims Rest Free Will Baptist Church, Cedar Island, with the Rev. Clifton Styron and the Rev. James Lupton officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedar Island Community Center.
Mrs. Goodwin held the longest active membership of Pilgrims Rest Free Will Baptist Church.
She is survived by her two daughters, Guelda Salter of Stacy, and Fay Griffin of Morehead City; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 7-9 p.m.

Carl `Buck' Reinhardt, II, 63; funeral set for Monday
Carl Frederick "Buck" Reinhardt, II, 63, of Atlantic Beach, formerly of Atlanta, Ga., died Friday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
His funeral be at 3 p.m. Monday at Bogue Banks Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro.
A Davidson College graduate, he attended Bogue Banks Baptist Church and worked with Neuse Mental Health Center.
He worked eight years in Georgia, as a counselor in drug and alcohol abuse.
He is survived by his wife, Patty Reinhardt, of the home; four daughters, Carla Thomas of Altus, Okla., Lisa McGhen of Conyers, Ga., Michelle Freeland of Pleasant Grove, and Kelly Tagert of Greensboro; three sons, Carl Frederick "Rick" Reinhardt, III, Altus, Okla., Todd Freeland of Greensboro, and Tom Freeland of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Jeanne Reinhardt Matthews of Cincinnati, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sarah H. Lewis, 62, Stacy; funeral set for Monday
Sarah Hazel Lewis, 62, Stacy, loving wife and mother, died Friday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City.
Burial will follow at the Stacy Community Cemetery.
Mrs. Lewis worked with J.M. Davis Industries until her retirement in 1996.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbert Lewis, Jr., of the home; two sons, Darrell Lewis of Goldsboro and Ricky Lewis of Stacy; three sisters, Louise Sparks, Pearl Cook and Joyce Salter, all of Stacy; four brothers, Aldon Fulcher of Florida, Lloyd Fulcher of Southport, Marvin Fulcher and Graydon Fulcher, both of Stacy; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles Smith, 50, Wilson; former Morehead resident
Charles Michael "Mike" Smith, 50, of Wilson, a former resident of Morehead City, died Monday.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
His funeral was to be today at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Therese in Wilson with the Very Rev. James M. Labosky officiating. Burial was to follow in Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Owen Smith; a daughter, Michelle Elizabeth Smith of the home; a son, Michael Owen Smith of the home; and his father, Charles Smith of Oceanside, Calif.

Dr. Ted Best, 64, of Cary; former area medical director
James Ted Best, M.D., 64, of Cary, formerly of Cedar Island, died Saturday at his home.
He was born in Stantonburg, in Wilson County, on March 11, 1933.
He graduated from Duke University in 1955, and from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill medical school in 1959.
He achieved rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Alconbury, England.
He lived in Cedar Island, and practiced family medicine in Sea Level, and Harkers Island, from 1964 until 1989.
He was medical director of Sailors' Snug Harbor in Sea Level, until he moved to Apex.
He was in private family practice in Apex, from 1989 until 1996.
At his death, Dr. Best was a physician at N.C. Central Prison in Raleigh.
He served on the board of Christian Fellowship Home in Raleigh, from 1990 until his death.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and lover of nature.
His funeral was Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary with a private cremation service to be held at a later date.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Webb Best; three daughters, Tracey Arden Best of San Diego, Calif., Stephanie Ellen Best of Wilmington, and Charlotte Elizabeth and her husband, Lee Holliday, of Wilmington; a brother, Rex Best, Jr., of Stantonsburg; and three nieces.

Vivian Guthrie, 90; funeral to be Thursday
Vivian Yeomans Guthrie, 90, of Harkers Island, died Tuesday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
She was born Feb. 10, 1907 on Harkers Island and had been a resident of the Island Family Care for the past several years.
Her funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Free Grace Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Danny LeRoy officiating.
Burial will follow in the Polly Ann Davis cemetery in Harkers Island.
She is survived by three sons, William Bell Guthrie, Jerry L. Guthrie and Kendell Guthrie, all of Harkers Island; three daughters, Carolyn Wolfe, Edna Marion Cox and Cecelia Fulcher, all of Harkers Island; a brother, Harold Yeomans of Harkers Island; a sister, Lucille Fulcher of Harkers Island; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Plymouth Guthrie, who died on Oct. 1, 1972, and her parents, Walter and Edna Yeomans.
The family will receive friends at Munden Funeral Home and Crematory in Morehead City tonight from 7 to 8.

Anne Roening, 84, Hubert; was a World War II vet
Anne Corbett Roening, 84, of Hubert, died Monday at her home.
She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy; a member of the WAVE Cryptic Squad; and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mildred's Catholic Church in Swansboro.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m.
She is survived by her husband, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Howard Roening; and a son, Kevin J. Roening.
The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro, tonight from 7 to 9. A Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association service will be held at 7:15 and a Rosary service at 7:30.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Peterson Corbett.
