Thomas Eugene Boles
Mr. Thomas Eugene Boles of Elkin, son of the late Tom and Martha Jane Dobson Boles, was born in Surry County on March 31, 1941. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He attended Yadkin High School and was a member of Clarks Memorial Baptist Church in Boonville, where he served on the deacon board, trustee board, finance committee and usher board as long as his health permitted. He was an employee of Chatham Mfg. Co. in Elkin for many years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Boles; mother-in-law, Della M. Sales; and son, Bill Martin.
Those who cherish his memories are his devoted wife of 38 years, Imogene Sales Boles; four daughters, Linda (Bobby) Gross of St. Petersburg, Fla., Shelly (Anthony) Fisher of Winston-Salem and Jane (Daryll) Valentine and Deborah (Roy) Bowman of Mount Airy; two sons, Lawrence (Elaine) Martin of Roaring River and Leon (Gail) Martin of Elkin; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda (Leonard) Harris, of Wilkesboro; three brothers, Wayne (Lorine) Boles and Ted Boles of Boonville and Benny (Bernice) Boles of Wilkesboro; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Boles, of Elkin; Mabel (Bernard) Powell, of South Hill, Va., Lillian Sales, of Greensboro; and Kathy Sales, of Chicago, Illinois; two uncles; two aunts; nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
His funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Clarks Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Boles will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The funeral wake will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on U.S. 601, north of Yadkinville.
Howard Everette (Joe) McCann
Mr. Howard Everette (Joe) McCann, age 51, of Rock Creek Road, North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Tim McCann and the Rev. Hillery Wood officiating. Burial will be at the Rachel Baptist Church cemetery at a later date.
Mr. McCann was born on January 7, 1951, in Wilkes County to J. B. and Evelyn Cothern McCann. He was the owner of Joe’s Tire and Auto and was a member of Rachel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his fiancée, Sandy Osborne, of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Chris McCann of Cary and William McCann of Roaring River; his parents, of Roaring River; two sisters, Debra Johnson of Ronda and Adrenna Ford of Jonesville; and two brothers, Randy McCann and Kent McCann, both of Roaring River.
The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on North Wilkesboro Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30.

Bergie Cephus Speaks Jr.
Mr. Bergie Cephus Speaks Jr., age 68, of Tharpe Road, Ronda, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Speaks was born September 2, 1934, in Wilkes County to Bergie Cephus and Lala Billings Speaks Sr. He was owner of Tri-County Sand and was a Mason at Traphill Lodge #483. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Speaks and Aaron Speaks.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Lyon Speaks, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James R. Speaks of Traphill and Bergie C. (Sharon) Speaks III of Ronda; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa (Kent) Wood and Darlene (Scott) Wood, all of Roaring River, and Kenna (Brad) Phillips of Raleigh; one brother, Toby Speaks, of Traphill; three sisters, Vena Lippy of Maryland, Elaine Pardue and Greta Sparks, both of Traphill; 11 grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Traphill Masonic Lodge #483.

Estie Mary Bryant
Mrs. Estie Mary Bryant, age 88, of Lyles Street, Elkin, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Bryant was born October 26, 1914, in Surry County to Luther and Mary Welborne Walters. She was retired from Astoria Braid and was a member of Arlington First Baptist Church. Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one son, Odean H. Bryant, of Elkin; two daughters, Barbara Lewis of Greensboro and Shelby Cox of Jonesville; four brothers, Corbet Walters, Mack Walters, Jimmy Walters and Sammy Walters; one sister, Martha Bryant; 11 grandchildren, Denise, Wesley, Mary, Gary, Don, Michelle, Norma, Michael, Crissy, Alex and Eric; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Arlington First Baptist Church by Rev. Russ Nixon, Rev. William Byrd and Rev. Randy Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Bryant will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Stauber Spainhour Flynt
Mr. Stauber Spainhour Flynt, 91, of Elkin, died Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin after a short illness following a period of declining health.
Mr. Flynt was born on January 15, 1911, in Forsyth County to the late Dr. Solomon Spainhour Flynt and Sally Stauber Flynt. Mr. Flynt was a lifelong member of Bethania Moravian Church. Following graduation from Rural Hall High School, he went to work for Chatham Manufacturing Co. in Winston-Salem as an assistant superintendent of finishing and relocated to Elkin in 1940, where he continued to work at Chatham as director of purchasing until his retirement in 1974. He married Anna Lou Miner on October 12, 1935. Mr. Flynt earned a private pilot license and enjoyed flying; was a hunter and fisherman, but his real love was the game of golf, which he played until age 85. Mr. Flynt was a past president of Cedarbrook Country Club and served on the board of directors at Cedarbrook. He was a former Jaycee and Kiwianian. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Flynt was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are his son, S. Miner Flynt, and wife, Susan, of State Road, and a host of very special nieces and nephews and many longtime friends.

A graveside service was conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Bethania Moravian Cemetery in Bethania. Rev. Charles Fishel and Rev. Brian Rummage will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 Thursday evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Bethania Moravian Church, 5545 Main St., Bethania, N.C., 27010, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Edwin Y. Brown
Mr. Edwin Y. Brown, 82, of the Syracuse, N.Y., area for 60 years and formerly of Jonesville, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2002.
He was born in Yadkin County and retired in 1983 as an inspector at New Process Gear after 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 1650. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Mabry and Evelyn Mayberry.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Doris A. Dudley Brown, of James Square Nursing Home; two daughters, Kathleen A. Fabian of Eastwood, N.Y., and Jean L. Nicholas of Liverpool, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2002, by Pastor Conard Hatfield at the Island Ford Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin V.F.W. Post 10346.

James Herman Thompson
Mr. James Herman Thompson, age 66, of Possum Trot Road, Thurmond, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2002, at the High Point Regional Health System.
Mr. Thompson was born March 26, 1936, in Surry County to H.G. and Minnie Royal Thompson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired guard from the Department of Corrections. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Hinson Thompson.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy G. (Catherine) Thompson of Mountain Park, Todd W. (Deanna) Thompson, Travis D. Thompson and Toby C. Thompson, all of Dobson; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann T. (Donald) Marion, of Siloam; two sisters, Thelma Miller, of Texas, and Georotha Gentry, of East Bend; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Park Methodist Church by Rev. Tony Bowman. Burial followed at Mountain Park Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mountain Park Methodist Church, 854 Mountain Park Road, State Road, N.C.
