Frear Edward Adams
Frear Edward Adams, of Yadkinville, loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the home of his daughter.
Mr. Adams was born on May 16, 1917, in Yadkin County to the late Henry and Lonia Adams. His wife of 50 years, Ruby Steelman Adams, preceded him on December 12, 1989. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Adams and Bruster Adams, and one sister, Josephine Johnson.
Mr. Adams is survived by a son, Michael Edward Adams (Billie), of Lake Gaston; a daughter, Sharon Adams Cave, and beloved son-in-law, Gary, of Boonville; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Adams of High Point, Lisa (John) Passyn of Mars, Pa., Kim (Neil) MacArthur of Mount Holly, New Jersey, Angela (Steve) Walker of Jonesville and Eric (Stephanie) Cave of East Bend; one great-grandson, John Ryan Passyn; one sister, Barbara Lovelace, of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a beloved friend, Mary Collins.
Mr. Adams served his country during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in battle. He worked at Adams Motor Company and was the owner of Adams Exxon and Phillips 66 service stations in Yadkinville. Mr. Adams was an avid ball cap collector. Thank you to each and everyone who gave him a cap, or left a bag of caps at the door. It always put a smile on his face. Mr. Adams was a charter member of the Yadkin Sertoma Club and was an over-50-year member of the Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162 A.F. & A.M.
The family is especially grateful and wants to say "thank you" to Mary Collins for being such a wonderful friend and for always being there for Dad and his family so many times; also, to Mr. Werner Lepould for helping to take such good care of our dad. The family would like to thank the host of special friends and medical personnel who supported Frear and his family through his illness. The family also wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Yadkin County and staff for their extraordinary nursing care for Dad, to Dr. Ioana Apoltan and Dr. Patty Williams of Blue Ridge Cardiology, and to the nurses at Hugh Chatham Hospital for the care and kindness given to our dad for the past months of his illness.
The family will receive friends at Gentry Family Funeral Service, U.S. 601, north of Yadkinville, from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Yadkinville, conducted by Rev. Dallas Prestwood and Rev. Richard Eskew. Burial will follow in the Boonville Church cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites by Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162 A.F. & A.M. and full military honors by Yadkin V.F.W. Post 10346.

Benjamin Earl Stokes
Benjamin Earl Stokes, 72, of Hamptonville, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Stokes was born on Feb. 28, 1930, in Yadkin County to Leonard Overton and Ola Macemore. He was a tobacco farmer and loved to garden. One of his great joys was to share his produce from his garden with neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Stokes and Clayton Stokes; and two half-brothers, Weldon Swaim and George Swaim.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Anderson Stokes, of the home; five stepchildren, Kathy Jones, Janet Shew, Sue Brown, Linda Nixon and Johnny Shew; nine step-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice (Jim) Brown and Magdalene (James) Huffman, both of Hamptonville; two brothers, Worth (Mildred) Stokes and W. G. (Kay) Stokes, both of Hamptonville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Stokes will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, at the Gentry Family Chapel in Jonesville by Rev. Ray Groce and Rev. Bobby Swaim. Burial will follow in the United Fellowship Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville.
Beulah Hudson Ball
Beulah Hudson Ball of Eden celebrated 99 years on this earth, and for her 100th birthday, her Lord called her home to celebrate with Him. Mrs. Ball, 100, a native of Yadkin County, died Saturday at her home.
Mrs. Ball’s service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Wesleyan Church in Eden. Burial will follow at Overlook Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. on Monday evening at Fair Funeral Home, 432 Boone Road, Eden, and at other times at the home at 709 Camelia Lane in Eden.
Mrs. Ball was a lifetime member of Trinity Wesleyan Church and was also a teacher there for over 29 years.
Mrs. Ball is survived by her daughters, Faye Ball Light and husband, Rudy, of Eden, Sylvia Ball and Ann Marcum, of the home; sons, Gary Ball and wife, Kathryn, of Danville, Va., and Rev. Vernon Ball and wife, ReElla, of Elkin; daughter-in-law, Patricia Ball, of Elkin; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ball was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Ball; a son, Cecil D. Ball; two infant children; and two brothers and sisters.

Rose Marie Layell Gonneville
Rose Marie Layell Gonneville, 50, of Lucinda Lane, Kernersville, passed away at 1:13 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem from complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis.
She was born on January 8, 1952, in Surry County to Ernest and Mary Ann Vestal Layell. Mrs. Gonneville was a hairdresser for 30 years and was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Vestal Layell.
Surviving are her husband, Danny Gonneville; three children, Donna Marie Harris-Scales and son-in-law, Eddie Scales, of Winston-Salem, Deborah Lynn Harris-Gentry, of Yadkinville, and Stephen Gregory Harris and daughter-in-law, Lisa Harris, of Kernersville; father and stepmother, Ernest and Dorothy Brown Layell; granddaughter, Jennifer Lauren Smith, of Winston-Salem; and brothers, Wayne Layell of Walkertown, Sammy Layell of Union Grove, Dough Layell of East Bend, Randy Layell of Jonesville and David Layell of Georgetown, Maryland.
Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, at the Gentry Family Chapel by Rev. Hilary Vestal. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Monday before the funeral service at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 north of Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Gray J. "Papa Gray" Hutchens
Gray J. "Papa Gray" Hutchens, 82, of Mills Road, Yadkinville, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at his home.
He was born on June 12, 1920, in Yadkin County to the late Johnny H. and Virginia Permelia Williams Hutchens. Mr. Hutchens was a retired tobacco farmer and was a member of Pilot View Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Pearl Williams Hutchens, and by nine brothers and sisters, Lee Hutchens, Luzina Hutchens, Ernest Hutchens, Sallie H. Brown, Maudie H. Davis, Lunsford "Shorty" Hutchens, Ralph G. Hutchens, Edgar Hutchens and Kathleen Hutchens.
Surviving are his son, Lawrence (Shelia) Hutchens, of Boonville; a special granddaughter, Wendy Hutchens; two sisters, Jennie H. Brown and Rachel H. Sink; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Jimmy Hutchens.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the Gentry Family Chapel by Rev. Don Luellon. Burial will follow in the Pilot View Friends Church cemetery.

Connie Ruth Hinson Hall Parks
Connie Ruth Hinson Hall Parks, age 77, of South Center Church Road, Thurmond, passed away Friday, August 30, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Parks was born on January 19, 1925, in Surry County to W.A. and Callie Cockerham Hinson. She retired from Troutman Shirt and was a member of Center Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amy Eugene Parks Sr.; a sister, Ruby Hinson; and six brothers, Dwight, Herman, Ira, Ralph, Robert and her twin brother, Lonnie Hinson.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dewitt and June Hall of State Road, Amy Eugene and Jenny Parks Jr. and Robert and Lynn Parks, all of Elkin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Steven Willey of Elkin and Virginia and Lonnie Pardue of Thurmond; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Michael Pardue of North Wilkesboro, Robin Pardue of Thurmond, Kim and Todd Bowman of State Road, Scarlet and Jon Holleman of Jonesville, Kelly and Kevin Martin of Elkin, Beverley and Randy Butts of Salisbury, Lisa Burchette of Elkin, Sandi Nance of Elkin, Todd Hall of Philadelphia, Pa., and Brandi and Jason Childress of State Road; four stepgrandchildren, the Rev. Jimmy and Karen Pardue of Jonesville, Regina M. Pardue of Orlando, Fla., Daniel Willey of Chapel Hill and Richard Willey of Elkin; six great-grandchildren, Jim-Bob, Laken, Zachary, Alexis, Jon-Patrick and Jodi; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Andrew and Taylor; special friends, Nina Cheek and Ima Crouse, both of Thurmond; and her special poodle dog, Davie.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Center Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeff Cleary, Rev. Don Hayes and Rev. Olin Barker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Parks will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family received friends Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Raymond Monroe Vestal
Raymond Monroe Vestal, 75, of Raymond Road, Jonesville, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mr. Vestal was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Yadkin County to James and Stella Ireland Vestal. Mr. Vestal was a United States Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip Vestal and Thad Junior Vestal and a sister, Edna Vestal.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Sue Vestal, of the home; two sons, Bryan Matthew Vestal of Jonesville and Perry Raymond Vestal and Anne Furstenberg of Winston Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda Ann and Mike Chambers of Winston Salem; his sister, Agnes Vestal Wilmoth, and a very devoted twin sister, Mary Ruth Vestal Davis, both of Jonesville; five grandchildren, Wendy Berrier, Brandon Ray Berrier, Samuel Jordan Berrier, Amy Chambers and Tyler Chambers.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home by Archie Poindexter. Burial followed in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service.

Eura McBride Edwards
Eura McBride Edwards, 93, of Ronda, died August 30, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin.
She was born July 26, 1909, a daughter of Robert William and Mary Lou Nina McBride. On June 14, 1933, she married Banner Arville Edwards, who preceded her in death on April 18, 1985. She was a charter member of Ronda First Baptist Church. She was an active member of the WMU, church choir and taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and taught school 33 years at Ronda-Clingman Elementary School. She was a member of the North Carolina Education Association. She was a resident of Parkwood Retirement Home and Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the last eight years. She also was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; two sisters, Blanche McBride Martin and Bertha McBride Slocum; and a brother, Vance Maurice McBride.
She is survived by two sisters, Jennie McBride Boger, of Concord and Willye McBride Stevens, of Asheville; a brother, George Vaughn McBride, of Jacksonville, Florida; three sons, Gerald Edwards of Winston-Salem, Wendell (Pat) Edwards of King and Wayne (Marvorene) Edwards of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Glenda Brown, of High Point; seven grandchildren, Anita Edwards Talley and Marty Edwards of Pfafftown, Alice Brown Bryan of Charlotte, Kyle Brown of High Point, Amanda Brown Beaty of Belmont and Marlina Edwards Griewe and Bryon Edwards of Greensboro; and 10 great-grandchildren, Brooke Talley, Brandon Talley, Zachary Edwards, Cameron Edwards, Peter Bryan, Reid Brown, Neil Brown, Nolan Beaty, Audrey Beaty and John Spencer (Jack) Griewe.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Edwards on Monday, September 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Ronda by Rev. Mike Hall and Dr. Kenneth Hyde.
The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Ronda Cemetery.
