Charles Howard Swift Jr.
Charles Howard Swift Jr., age 81, of Roaring Gap, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2002, at Elkin Healthcare.
Mr. Swift was born on June 19, 1921, in Surry County to Charles Howard and Pearl Cockerham Swift.
Mr. Swift was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. He was owner of Swift’s Auto Salvage Inc. and was a member of Mountain Park Baptist Church. He was also a member of Elkin Masonic Lodge 454 and a Shriner. Mr. Swift was the first president of the State Road Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Swift, and a sister, Betty Swift Bray.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Swift (Randy) Kirby, of State Road; one sister, Lillian Swift Perry, of Elkin; and two grandchildren, Brandy Kirby and Joseph Kirby.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Attaway. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the State Road Volunteer Fire Department. Military honors will be rendered at the graveside by V.F.W. Post 2019 Mount Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain.

Shirley Ann Brindle Spicer
Mrs. Shirley Ann Brindle Spicer, age 55, of Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Spicer was born on March 18, 1947, in Surry County to Monroe and Ruby Fowler Brindle. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Jack Spicer, of the home; two sons, Charles "Chuck" Kinyoun, of Statesville, and Billy Todd Spicer, of Elkin; one daughter, Wendy Kinyoun, of Elkin; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis (Kathy) Brindle, of Dobson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kathleen Brindle (Frank) Sprinkle and Imogene Speas, all of Dobson; and four grandchildren, Nicole Blackburn, Joseph Kinyoun, Racheal Jones and Ashton Kinyoun.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Baptist Church by Rev. Jeff Wall. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Spicer will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Debra Ann "Debbie" Jenkins
Debra Ann "Debbie" Jenkins, 45, formerly of 810 Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, passed away on Sunday morning, September 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Miss Jenkins had been living in North Wilkesboro at Brushy Mountain Mulberry Group home for over 20 years. She was born in Surry County to James Walter Jenkins and Hazel Harris Jenkins on January 15, 1957.
She is survived by one sister, Kay (Garvey) Burchette, of Statesville; two aunts, Hallie Childress of Lenoir and Annie Mae Snow of Jonesville; one uncle, Russell Harris, of Wilkesboro; two honorary uncles and aunts, Ray and Lois Luffman of Elkin and Vance and Gerry Miller of Winston-Salem; three nephews; one niece; and a host of grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Rev. Don Stephens, Rev. Hobert Key and Rev. Jimmy Gilreath. Miss Jenkins’ body was placed in the church to lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family received friends on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin to help with Debra’s funeral expenses.

Albert Lee Gregory
Albert Lee Gregory, 65, of Little Egypt Road, Hamptonville, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2002, at his home.
He was born on November 2, 1936, in Iredell County to the late Arville and Minnie Cass Gregory. Mr. Gregory was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Erma Lou Flinchum.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Glenda Oliver Gregory, of the home; five children, Vickie (David) Neal, J.W. (Letha) Gregory and James (Veronica) Gregory, all of Hamptonville, Allen (April) Gregory, of Ronda, and Rebecca (Jody) Mullis, of Boonville; grandchildren, John William Gregory Jr., James Neal, JoAnn Mullis, Jason Mullis, Jody William Mullis Jr., Kelsey Gregory and twins Austin and Brandon Gregory; two sisters, Sudy Jarvis, of North Wilkesboro, and Mattie (Jackie) Gregory, of Hamptonville; and two brothers, Ralph (Nadine) Gregory, of Hamptonville, and Raeford (Ethel) Gregory, of Harmony.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Sweet Home Baptist Church by Rev. R.C. Redmond, Rev. Joe Souther and Rev. Vernon Brown. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.

Nettie Wall Couch
Nettie Wall Couch, 89, of North Wall Street, Elkin, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mrs. Couch was born on January 23, 1913, in Avery County to John and Callie Haynes Wall. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. Inc. and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hampton Couch.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen (Karl) Karalus and Hattie Couch (Charlie) Walls, all of Elkin; one sister, Ethel Kendrick, of Greensboro; five grandchildren and spouses, Charlene K. (Donald) Ortman, Teresa Harris, Charles (Monica) Hinshaw, Dana Culler and Ryan Hinshaw; four great-grandchildren, Ashley Davidson, Amy Hinshaw, Christopher Culler and Hall Drive, Elkin, passed away on Tuesday morning, September 24, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Fayette County, West Virginia, to Barney White Sr. and Pauline Perkins White on November 23, 1935. She served in the United States Navy from 1954-1958. She also attended Long Beach State and Los Angeles State universities. Mrs. Smith was also a registered nurse.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Smith, of the home; one daughter, Suzann Smith, of Charlotte; two brothers, Barney White Jr., of Oak Hill, West Virginia, and Paul White of Fayetteville, West Virginia; two sisters, Nara Wise, of Castilla, Ohio, and Donna Dalton, of Toledo, Ohio.

Amy Dell McGrady Pendolino
Amy Dell McGrady Pendolino, 85, of South Main Street, Jonesville, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin.
She was born on March 19, 1917, in Wilkes County to the late Moss and Maude Johnson McGrady. Mrs. Pendolino was a homemaker, a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, and a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Navy WAVES.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Benjamin Pendolino; a son, Dominick Pendolino; a grandson, John Pendolino; and two brothers, Ed and Roy McGrady.
Surviving are her son, Ralph Pendelino, of South Main Street, Jonesville; three sisters, Bessie McGrady, of Elkin, Marybell (Bedford) Bauguess, of Elkin, and Stella (Doug) Baker, of Wilkesboro; a brother, John McGrady, of Traphill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. on Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Old Roaring River Baptist Church by Father Michael Kottar.
