Theodore Roosevelt Van Eaton Jr.
Theodore Roosevelt Van Eaton Jr., age 76, of 113 Don’s Well Lane, Elkin, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2002.
Mr. Van Eaton was born in Surry County on October 3, 1925, to the late Theodore Roosevelt Van Eaton Sr. and Emma March Van Eaton. Mr. Van Eaton Jr. served in the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Billy Van Eaton; two daughters, Emma Jean Hughes and Carolyn Dobson; one son, Scott Craig; and two sisters, Betty Lee Lytton and Evelyn Barker.
He is survived by his wife, Ola Jean March Van Eaton, of the home; seven sons, Calvin Van Eaton of Elkin, Larry (Catherine) Van Eaton of Elkin, Jerry Van Eaton of Elkin, Terry Van Eaton of Elkin, Gary (Crystal) Van Eaton of Jonesville, Dwayne Van Eaton of Elkin and Jeff Van Eaton of Elkin; four daughters, Helen Martin, Rosmond Van Eaton, Cecille Van Eaton and Delphine Van Eaton, all of Elkin; two sisters, Louise March of Elkin and Emma Lou Cowan of Dale City, Virginia; 31 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Elkin by Rev. Fred Carlton and Rev. James Welborn. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.
Bobby Joe Hauser
Bobby Joe Hauser, 70, of High Point, died on September 22, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born on February 18, 1932, in Forsyth County to Arthur Barnell (Buck) Hauser and Gladys Thomas Hauser.
He is survived by three sons, Don Hauser and wife, Kim, of Conover, Ron Hauser and wife, Sally, of Advance, and Randall Hauser and wife, Sonia, of Indian Trail; four grandchildren, Jonathan and Landon, Matt and Chris; two brothers, Bill Hauser and Norman Hauser; and two sisters, Jean Cheek and Catherine Farmer.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Wednesday, September 25, 2002.

Derek Steven Brown
Derek Steven Brown, 21, beloved son of Ronnie Gray and JoAnn Johnson Brown, passed away suddenly on Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.
Derek was born on May 26, 1981. He attended Forbush High School and worked with his family on their farm.
He is survived by his little sister, Danielle Leigh Brown. Other survivors include his grandparents, Mary Ellen Johnson, Harold Gray Brown and Danny and Wanda Johnson; two uncles and an aunt, Ronnie Johnson and Rex and Gayle Norman; and three nephews.
A memorial service for Derek will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by Rev. Brian Powell.
Sadie Pinnix Carter
Sadie Pinnix Carter, age 91, of Austin-Traphill Road, Elkin, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Nursing Center in Elkin.
Mrs. Carter was born on April 6, 1911, in Yadkin County to William and Alice Macemore Pinnix. She was retired from Home Chair Company and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Billy Harold Carter; a sister, Elsie Pinnix Osborne; a half-sister, Bettie Robbins; a brother, Dewey Pinnix; and two half-brothers, Robert Pinnix and Claude Pinnix.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd A. Carter, of Elkin; three sons and daughters-in-laws, Allen (Shirley) Carter of Ronda, Donald (Pam) Carter of Yadkinville and Monty (Ann) Carter of Elkin; three half-brothers, Billy Gray Pinnix, Joseph Pinnix and Jim Pinnix, all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Don Stephens. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Mary Lou Billings
Mary Lou Billings, 71, of 130 Billings Lane, Thurmond, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Billings was born in Wilkes County to Guy R. Blackburn and Betress Spicer Blackburn on April 20, 1931. She was a member of Center Baptist Church and was retired from Lucia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale Billings, on August 22, 1993; a son, Stanley Hermon; and a granddaughter, Amber Noel Billings.
She is survived by two sons, Pastor Bobby (Sue) Billings, of Mayodan, and Nathan Billings, of Thurmond; two daughters, Karen (Walter) Pinnix, of King, and Cynthia Billings, of Thurmond; three brothers, J.T. Blackburn of State Road, Clyde Blackburn of Elkin and William Blackburn of Thurmond; one sister, Ola Mae Hanks of Elkin; three grandchildren, Richie Billings, Levi Billings and Kelli Pinnix; one great-grandchild, Simon Billings; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Center Baptist Church by Rev. Olin Barker and Pastor Bobby Billings. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening, Sept. 30, from 7-9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin.
David Russell Pardue
David Russell Pardue, of Russell Pardue Road, State Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. at Elkin HealthCare in Elkin.
Mr. Pardue was the husband of Nadine Mathis Pardue. He was born in Surry County to Mircus C. and Olevea Mayes Pardue on September 22, 1912. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church as long as his health allowed. He was a Sunday school teacher of the men’s adult class for several years. Russell was a self-employed plumber and farmer.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jodine Pardue of Hamptonville, Linda and Larry Ross of Hondo, Texas, and Penny and Sammy Simmons of Thurmond. He leaves behind a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who loved him very much; a special niece, Gail Hatcher, of King, and a nephew, Billy Pendergrass, of Climax; seven grandchildren who cherished him; and two precious great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2002, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church by Elder Greg Simmons, Rev. Vernon Ball and Rev. Dan Merritt. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Pardue will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Gordon Otis (Pete) Gambill
Gordon Otis (Pete) Gambill, 75, of Roaring River, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gambill was born on March 21, 1927, in Surry County to Tildon M. and Betty Bauguess Gambill. Pete was a well-known car dealer, a United States Army veteran of WWII and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Gambill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Nonar Smoot and Eunice Gentry; and two brothers, Folger Gambill and Greenville Gambill.
Surviving are Virginia (Sis) Gambill; a daughter, Rada Key, and her husband, Dennis, of Roaring River; a son, Michael Gambill, and his wife, Lydia, of Jonesville; a granddaughter, Brittany Key; a grandson, Zachery Key; and several nieces and nephews.
The Gambill family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. A memorial service will follow at 8 p.m., conducted by Rev. Ray Hamilton.

Betty Leigh Sprinkle Melton
Betty Leigh Sprinkle Melton, 72, of Courtney Huntsville Road, Yadkinville, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born on February 15, 1930, in Yadkin County to the late Roscoe and Amelia Hutchens Sprinkle. Mrs. Melton worked for 53 years with her husband on the farm and was a member of Turners Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother and several sisters.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Furman H. "Toots" Melton, of the home; three children, Vicki Shore of Yadkinville, Chris (Lynn) Melton of Yadkinville and Susan (Carl) Worley of Davidson County; grandchildren, Jason Todd Shore, Dana Worley, Corrie (William) Morris, Colt Melton and Dustin Melton; a great-grandchild, Zachary Morris; two step-grandchildren, Danny and Cody Casey; three sisters, Maggie Swaim and Desie Reece, both of Yadkinville, and Sally Macemore of Hamptonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Turners Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Curtis Gibson and Rev. David Maynard. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on U.S. Highway 601, north of Yadkinville.
