Wilma Marie Hampton
Wilma Marie Hampton, age 74, of Gwyn Avenue, Elkin, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Hampton was born on June 29, 1928, in Surry County to Everett H. and Della Wall Holbrook. She was a seamstress and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Welborn Cody Hampton.
Survivors include one son, Lanny C. Hampton, of Thomasville; one daughter, Libby V. Hampton, of Whiteville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy (Betty) R. Holbrook of Winston-Salem, Fred (Betty) Holbrook of Statesville and James Lee Holbrook of Elkin; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna Jean (Allen) Bates of Yadkinville; one grandchild and spouse, Jason (Beth) Chadwick Hampton; and a special friend, Barbara Hinshaw of Thomasville.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church by Rev. Vernon Ball. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hampton’s body was placed in the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

Lera Altice Bennett
Lera Altice Bennett, age 91, of College Street, Wilkesboro, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Avante at Wilkes.
Mrs. Bennett was born on April 25, 1911, in Rocky Mount, Virginia, to Charles and Fannie Mae Altice. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John F. (Jack) Bennett.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dewey (Klara) Bennett of Houston, Texas, Harold Bennett of Detroit, Mich., and Charles (Bonnie) Bennett of Elkin; four grandchildren, Deborah B. Taylor of North Wilkesboro, Kimberly Bennett of Welcome, Brenda Bennett and Leona Bennett.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Gardens by Rev. Jonah Parker. The family received friends Tuesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Douglas Lee Winslow
Douglas Lee Winslow, of Bomont Lane, Moravian Falls, died Sunday, August 25, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at noon at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. E. Thomas Miller officiating. Entombment was in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Mr. Winslow was born in Elizabeth City on April 26, 1932, to Harry Lee and Helen Lee Bray Winslow.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Dell Michigan public and private schools, where she taught math and science. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Cape Coral, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hanks.
Survivors include her husband, Clark Wallo, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Johna (George) McLaughlin of Vulcan, Mich., and Nancy (James) Burley of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; three sisters, Ruth Brown, Flora Mae Coe and Bessie Lee Burcham, all of Elkin; and four grandsons, Sean McLaughlin, Jimmy Burley, Joe Burley and Dave Burley.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Father Michael Kottar. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

John L. Wood
John L. Wood, age 67, of 141 Wesmon Street, Mount Airy, husband of Faye Southern Wood, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Wood was born in Surry County on June 25, 1934, to the late Monnie Washington and Bessie Brown Wood. Mr. Wood graduated from Beulah High School and earned his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees from Appalachian State University. John served our country from 1956 to 1958 in the United States Army, having served as a cryptographer, United States Intelligence, Okinawa. Mr. Wood worked several years at P.H. Hanes Knitting Company and was owner and operator of Wood's Self Service, along with his wife, Faye, from 1959 to 1972. From 1972 to 1997, he was an instructor at Surry Community College and was later the chairman of the Division of Business at Surry Community College. In 1994, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award. He was a member of the Beulah Ruritan Club for 43 years, with 38 years perfect attendance. He served as club president, district governor, national director and many other district and national capacities. John had 22 years of service with the Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter, first responder, secretary and board member. He was a 10-year volunteer reservist with the Surry County Emergency Medical Services and, as EMT-IV, received multiple life-saving awards. He was a trustee of Northern Hospital of Surry County for nine years, a member of the advisory council of North Surry High School, past president of the North Surry Band Boosters and a member of Roaring Gap Baptist Church. John volunteered with the Surry County American Red Cross for 21 years and was a 10-gallon blood donor.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Southern Wood, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Monnie John and Traci Wood of Nashville, Tenn., and Wesley McKinley and Ann Wood of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Adam Wood, Leah Wood and Hannah Wood; two stepgrandchildren, Rob Young and Sarah Young; a sister, Annie Nichols, of Mount Airy; three sisters-in-law, Emma Wood, Helen Wood and Margaret "Peg" Southern; a brother-in-law, Lee Southern; and a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law/golfing buddy, Lynn and Kyle Norman of King.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by a son, Neal Southern Wood; and three brothers, Brady Wood, Glenn Wood and Leonard Wood.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Atkins and the Rev. Larry Crouse, with Burial in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mary Gertrude Driver Davis
Mary Gertrude Driver Davis, 90, a loving mother and grandmother, of Boonville, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Yadkin County to Henry and Sarah Shore Driver. She was a homemaker and was retired from Astoria Braid Co. of Boonville. Mrs. Davis was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Curtis Davis; two sons, James Sherril Davis and Shelby Gene Davis; a daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" Brown; a granddaughter; and eight brothers and sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Miller and her husband, Junior, of Dobson, Linda McBride of Boonville and Kay Frances Wilkins of Boonville; a son, Dean Davis and his wife, Amy, of Boonville; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Davis will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Shady Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Paul Stewart, Rev. Charlie Jones and Rev. Bill Faw. Mrs. Davis will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, June 3, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. Hwy. 601 N., Yadkinville.
