Sidney Wyatt Maynard
Mr. Sidney Wyatt Maynard, age 76, of 1459 Scenic Valley Road, Glade Valley, died Sunday, February 2, 2003, at his home.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Andrews.
Mr. Maynard was born May 14, 1926, in Cary, to the late Luther W. and Blanche Tillman Maynard. He was a graduate of Cary High School. He attended Campbell College and Wake Forest University. He retired as Director of the Maryland Agency for Surplus Properties. He was a volunteer fireman for the Cary Fire Department from 1951 until 1955. He was ordained as a deacon at Burtonsville Baptist Church in Burtonsville, Maryland, in 1976 and was presently a member of Sparta Presbyterian Church. His retirement years were spent enjoying raising cattle on his farm in Alleghany County and spending many happy hours with his family and beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Magdalene Gulley Maynard of the home; a daughter, Marcia Maynard of Thurmond; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rebecca Maynard of Elkin; two granddaughters, Meredith and Miranda Maynard; two stepgrandsons, Peter and Matthew Mariani; a sister, Jane Bowers of Harrisonburg, Va., and a brother, Robert Maynard of Cary.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday evening, February 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Interment will be at a later date.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 4 until 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Olene Cooper Finney
Mrs. Olene Cooper Finney, age 80, of West Highland Avenue, Elkin, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Finney was born July 18, 1922, in Wilkes County to the Rev. Will and Melinda Snow Cooper.
Mrs. Finney was retired from Sunbeam Appliance Company and was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ethel Vestal, Cline Cooper, Thelma Wood, Leona Collins, Hubert Cooper, Mary Crouse, Woodrow Cooper, Helen Casey, Fred Cooper and Ed Cooper.
Survivors include her husband, Grady Finney of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy (Jimmy) Parks of Clemmons; and one granddaughter and her husband, Kimberly (Joe) Seipel-Parks.
Funeral services for Mrs. Finney will be held Thursday, February 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church by Rev. Johnny Blevins. Burial will follow at Roaring Gap Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Finney will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

James Harold Luffman
James Harold Luffman, 79, of 1332 Luffman Road, Ronda, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mr. Luffman was born in Yadkin County on July 5, 1924, to the late Lonnie H. Luffman and Fannie Reeves Luffman. Mr. Luffman was a member of Little Elkin Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nonnie Swaim Luffman of the home; two sons, James (Shirley) Luffman and Garry (Kay) Luffman, both of Ronda; two sisters, Iva Jean (Clay) Pruitt of Ronda and Lorene (Leonard) Ewing of McAdenville; one brother, LeRoy (Gladys) Luffman of Elkin; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Little Elkin Baptist Church, by Rev. Gwyn Anderson and Rev. Roger Groce. Mr. Luffman’s body will be placed in the church to lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The Luffman family received friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, Elkin.
Ernest Taft Edwards
Mr. Ernest Taft Edwards, age 95, of Brian Center Lane, Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Brian Center.
Mr. Edwards was born January 22, 1909, in Wilkes County to William S. and Sarah Stone Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin where he served as a deacon. He was an accomplished wood worker and he was a longtime employee of Chatham Manufacturing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Davis Edwards; six brothers, Earl, Ralph, Reid, Weylor, Banner and Bob; a sister, Ossie Jones.
Survivors include two sons, Charles D. Edwards and his wife Julia, Stephen E. Edwards and his wife Janet, all of Winston-Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Cheryl E. Wilson of Corinth, Miss., Brian Edwards of Manteo, Beverly Qualters of Winston-Salem, Neil Edwards of Morganton; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26, 2004, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Elkin by Dr. Bill Johnson. Burial will follow at Ronda Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Mr. Edwards will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Elkin or to the N.C. Baptist Foundation.

Brenda Sue Coalson Cave
Mrs. Brenda Sue Coalson Cave, 46, of Dobson, the wife of Manley (Sonny) Cave Jr., died on Monday, March 22, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Brenda was born in Forsyth County on March 9, 1958, to Foster Junior Coalson and Barbara Ann Gullatt Coalson.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the 82nd Airborne Division; attended Central View Missionary Baptist Church and North Side Baptist Church.
Surviving is her husband, Manley (Sonny) Cave Jr. of the home; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Jami and Teddy Guynn of Mount Airy, Amy and Joel Jones of Elkin; a stepgranddaughter, Natalee Jones; her parents, Foster Junior and Barbara Ann Coalson of Mount Airy: a grandmother, Pernie Coalson of Mount Airy; and a brother, Charles Edward Coalson of Mount Airy.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday March 24, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Central View Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the V.F.W. Honor Guard Post 2019 Mount Airy, and Post 9436, Pilot Mountain. Rev. Travis Chipman will conduct the service.
The family will receive friends at Central View Missionary Baptist Church from 12-1:45 p.m. before the service.

Calvin David Freeman
Mr. Calvin David Freeman, 67, husband of Barbara Hall Freeman, of Twin Oaks Road, Elkin, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
He was born in Surry County on July 19, 1936, to the late Hugh David and Vena White Freeman. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Freeman recently retired from Thomasville Furniture Company in Winston-Salem after many years of service.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Hall Freeman, of the home; one daughter, Debbie Conaway of Riverview, Florida; a special grandson, John Travis Conaway of Yadkinville; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Jean and Tom Frye of Goldsboro, Janie and Mike Waller of Elkin, Juanita and Clyde Fuller of Goldsboro and Christine Freeman of Elkin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Willie and Louise Freeman of Elkin and Lonnie Bob and Patricia Freeman of Elkin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004, in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson with Rev. Mickey Brooks and Rev. Brian Cartwell officiating. Burial will follow in Welcome View Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson.
Eva Adams Simmons
Mrs. Eva Adams Simmons, 74, of North Elkin Drive, Elkin, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born April 23, 1929, in Yadkin County to the late Arthur Edward and Thursie Alley Adams.
Mrs. Simmons was a beloved mother and homemaker, and worked for several years as a nurse with Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She enjoyed working and being active with the Girl Scouts for 15 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Lee Simmons, on February 4, 2004; and by two brothers, Wes Adams and Carlton Adams.
Surviving are her two daughters, Jody Simmons and husband, Ranier Kern, of Winston-Salem and Jan Foster and Chuck of Mooresville; granddaughter, Elizabeth Danelle Marklin; four sisters, Helen Bullin, Faye Flynn, Bobbie Hershey, Lydia Logan; and two brothers, Arthur Adams Jr. and Bill Adams.
Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gentry Family Chapel by Rev. Bill Hale. Burial will follow in the Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North of Yadkinville.
