Callie Elizabeth Brooks Hudler
Mrs. Callie Elizabeth Brooks Hudler, 101, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at Yadkin Nursing Care Center. She was born on November 7, 1904 in Ashe County to the late Larkin and Amanda Elizabeth Osborne Brooks. Mrs. Hudler was a member of First Baptist Church of Boonville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, G.H. Hudler; two sisters, Ruby Brooks and Mae Brooks; two brothers, Joe Brooks and W.E. Brooks; an infant brother and sister and a daughter-in-law, Betty S. Hudler.
Surviving is her son, Robert H. Hudler of Hamptonville; her daughter, Ruth Almeda (Harvey) Reece of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Bobbie H. Scott, Joan R. Reece, Linda Tuttle and Brenda Hanson; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Scott, David Tuttle, Doug Tuttle, Craig Kiser and Amanda Kiser; a great-great-grandson, Beckett Tuttle and a special friend, Marie Fraiser Hailey.
Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by the Rev. Ken Boaz and the Rev. Craig Waldie. Burial will follow in Boonville Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2006 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville, which is serving the Hudler family, and other times at the home of Robert H. Hudler, 4905 Hwy 21, Hamptonville. Flowers are accepted or memorials can be made to Boonville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 429, Boonville.
Jessie Ray Jolly
Mr. Jessie Ray Jolly, age 80, of Austin Traphill Road, Elkin, widower of Mosha Sparks Jolly, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2006 at Charity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Yarboro officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jolly was born February 27, 1926, in Wilkes County to Marcus and Nancy Smoot Jolly. He retired from Chatham Manufacturing. Mr. Jolly served in the United States Air Force.
He is survived by one son, Keith Jolly and wife, Brenda of Wilkesboro and one grandson, Chad Jolly.
The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Friday night from 6 until 8 p.m.
Beulah Elizabeth Benge Calhoun Darnell
Beulah Elizabeth Benge Calhoun Darnell, 93, of 560 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin passed away Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Elkin Healthcare Center. She was born in Yadkin County on June 9, 1913 to the late Gordon Benge and Maggie Mauldin Benge. Beulah was retired from Elkin Furniture Factory and was a cook for many years at Roy's Restaurant and a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband Earlie Calhoun; late husband, Everette Darnell; two sisters, Irene Freeman and Mozelle Darnell; two brothers, Earl Benge and Farris Benge; two step-sons, Jim and Arvil Darnell; and a step-granddaughter, Vivian Wooten.
She is survived by five children, Colene (Clyde) Collins of Elkin, Maggie Analene (Rev. Jimmy) Pruitt of King, Bobby (Barbara) Calhoun of Ronda, Dan (Louise) Calhoun of Elkin and J.C. (Darlene) Calhoun of Welcome; three stepchildren, Bill (Judy) Darnell, Benny (Margaret) Darnell and Louise Blackburn, all of Elkin; a sister, Grace Couch of Elkin; 10 grandchildren, Lydia Ackerman, Linda Blackburn, Joyce (Larry) Jones, Lorie (Steven) Hemric, Rocky Bryant, Missy Calhoun, Daniel Calhoun, Kevin Cockerham, Rebecca (Charles) Hendley and Paul (Mandy) Quisinberry; seven great-grandchildren, Rybon, Morgan Ackerman, Jamie (Bryan) Beaulieu, Jenny Blackburn, Tabitha Gordy and Amber and Jacob Bryant; seven great-great-grandchildren, Corey and Brandon Adams, Caleb and Garette Hemric and Brianna, Ethan and Brady Hendley; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Russ Nixon and the Rev. Olin Barker. The body will lie in-state from 1:30-2. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Darnell family will receive friends Friday evening, July 14, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1467 Cool Springs Church Road, Elkin in co/Bill Rogers. The family wants to Thank Elkin Healthcare Center for all their care and support to the Darnell Family. Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin is serving the Darnell family.
Judy Darlene Cheek Minton
Mrs. Judy Darlene Cheek Minton, 55, of Beckley, W.Va. departed her life on July 5, 2006 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Virginia. She was born January 11, 1951, to the late Fred and Ruth Hoskins Cheek. Judy was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was a lover of horses and had won a lot of first place trophies in horse shows throughout the state. She was a therapist at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for years.
Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Minton Rodriguez and husband David; two grandsons, Dennis David Rodriguez and David Rodriguez Jr. of Petersburg, Va.; three sisters, Liz Sneed of Pinehurst, Barbara Gentry of Elkin and Debbie Parks of Lancaster, S.C.; and one brother, Larry Cheek and wife Mayvon of Pleasant Ridge.
A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Baptist Church on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Foy Allen Garris
Foy Allen Garris (Paw Paw) went home to God on July 8, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family and friends to be with his first born grandchild, USN FC3 Nicholas Allen Bockrath. Foy was born July 16, 1931, to the late William McKinley and Emma Prevette Garris.
Foy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edna Joan (JoAn) Garris, his children, Ronald Allen (Ron), Patricia Jo Layne (Patty), Richard Clyde (Rick), Carolyn Sue Totty (Suzy), his grandchildren, Rachel Ann, Richard McKinly, Allen Harrison, and one great-grandchild, Nicholas Allen Bockrath Jr., and his constant companion, his dog, Tisha. Foy is also survived by his brothers, R.L. Garris of Chesterfield County, John Garris and his wife, Inez, of Lexington, his sisters, Annie Mae Wilmoth, and her husband, Eldon, of Elkin, Juanita Richardson of Kannapolis, sister-in-law Ella Garris, of East Bend, and by many loving and devoted nieces, nephews, and friends.
Foy is preceded by brothers Dean Garris, Billy W. Garris, Jerry Lee Garris, and sisters, Irene Harris, and Ann Starbuck. Foy was a Past Master of Chester Virginia Lodge 94 and a Korean War Veteran. He served with the 44th Combat Engineers in the Inchon Landing and the Battle of Chosen Resevoir. Foy ended his service with the Army with five major battle stars. Foy will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for children, and animals. He will be missed by all the lives he touched. In keeping with Foy's wishes, there will be no service. If you would like to do something in honor of Foy's memory, donations may be made to Hospice.
Carl C. Finnila
Carl C. Finnila, 79, died February 22, 2007 peacefully at home after a lengthy illness. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was born September 14, 1927, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Traverse City, Michigan, where he live until moving to Boonville in 1991.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marita L. McIntosh of Grawn, Michigan; one daughter, Penny L. (David) George of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, Kevin E. (Tamisiea) Lange of Lee's Summit, Missouri; Alicia (Jamie) Wood of Elkin; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Wood; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Selma Sandbacka Finnila; brothers, Eric, John, and Raymond and one sister, Inez Kucera. Carl was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed hunting, fishing, building and flying model airplanes, building birdhouses and gardening. He proudly served his country in the Army during World War II from 1945 - 1947 in Germany and was a member of the VFW. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2007 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Gentry Family Chapel by Dr. Phil Beavers. Burial will follow at Boonville Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post 10346.
In lieu of flowers the family asks memorials to be made to the VFW Post in Hamptonville or Mountain Valley Hospice, or charity of choice. The family wishes to thank Yadkin Valley Home Health and Mountain Valley Hospice for their wonderful care during his illness, especially, Kathy and Lynn.
John Ralph Creed Sr.
Mr. John Ralph Creed Sr., age 78, of 222 Valley View Road, Mt. Airy passed away suddenly at his home February 22, 2007. He was the beloved husband of Mrs. Bette Sue Childress Creed for 57 years. Mr. Creed was born November 9, 1928 in Surry County to the late Arthur and Ruth Newsome Creed. Mr. Creed was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Army. He was the owner and operator of Wolfe Brothers Furniture in State Road and was a well know businessman in the Mt. Airy and Elkin area. Mr. Creed had served in various civic clubs in many capacities. He was a member of the Mt. Airy Friends Church where he served on the ministry and council. Surviving are his wife, Bette Sue Childress Creed of the home; a daughter, Pam Creed Long and husband, David, New London; a son, John R. Creed, Jr. and wife, Robin, Mt. Airy; four grandchildren, Brian and Wesley Long, New London, Madison and Maggie Creed, Mt. Airy; two brothers, Richard 'Dick' Creed and wife, Marie, Clemmons and Perry Creed, Mt. Airy.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Creed was preceded in death by two sisters, Hattie Lou Creed and Joan Creed. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February, 25, 2007 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mt. Airy conducted by the Rev. Valdimir Strejcek. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Mt. Airy Friends Church, 109 West Wilson St., Mt. Airy, N.C. 27030 or to the donor's choice.
Rena Kathleen Cox
Rena Kathleen Cox of Palm Bay, Fla. beloved wife and mother passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at her residence. Rena was born to Paul and Vertis Adams of State Road on Feb. 23, 1936, were she resided until she moved to Florida in 1984. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her brother, Algin Adams.
She is survived by her husband Ed Cox; her daughter and son-in-law, Kitty and Brian Turner; her grandchildren, Angela and Christy Turner, all of Palm Bay, Fla. and her brother, Alfred Adams of State Road.
Arrangements entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin where memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007. Burial will take place afterward at Crestwood Memorial Garden, State Road.
