H. Dean Chappell
Mr. H. Dean Chappell, our loving husband and father, 53, of Fox Knob Road, passed away Monday July 12, 2004, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born June 26, 1951, in Surry County to Garl H. and Rosa Matthews Chappell. Mr. Chappell was former co-owner of Highway 21 Shell for 13 years, was the owner of Dean’s Auto Sales, a member of the Starmount High School Staff, Arlington Fire and Rescue, and Swaim’s Baptist Church. Dean lived his life in community service, and was always willing to help neighbors, friends and strangers. His father, Garl H. Chappell, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Betty Caudle Chappell, of the home; his son, Larry Dean Chappell, of the home; his mother, Rosa Matthews Chappell, Hamptonville; sister, Lora (Garry Dean) Evans, Hamptonville; niece and nephew, Rebecca and Aaron Evans, Hamptonville; mother-in-law, Lucille Childress Caudle, Yadkinville; brother-in-law, James Harold (Becky) Caudle, and nieces, Jessica and Emily Caudle; and other family and friends.
His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Swaims Baptist Church by Rev. Spencer King, Rev. Don Hudson, and Rev. Craig Waldie. He will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Swaims Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will received friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.
Avalon Chris Swaim
Avalon Chris Swaim, a former Elkin Police Officer, died June 29, 2004 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was born July 8, 1960. Mr. Swaim was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Katheryn Shores Swaim.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Katheryn Swain of Elkin; and sister, Tammy (Gary) Coltrane of Greensboro.
A memorial service is planned at Shoaly Branch Baptist Church on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 6 p.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Kenny Wood.
Dovie Wilmoth Cude
Dovie Wilmoth Cude, 92, was born in Surry County to Ezekiel and Glena Wilmoth on June 5, 1912, and died in Chapel Hill on July 10, 2004. A graduate of Appalachian State Teacher College, she taught in public schools in Orange and Surry counties for 38 years. She was predeceased by her husband Eber Folger Cude of Cedar Grove, North Carolina.
She is survived by their two children, Eber Folger Cude, Jr. of Dixon, Mo., and Jane Rosanne Cude of Chapel Hill. She is also survived by sister-in-law Gertrude Wilmoth of Portland, Ore.; brother-in-law Frank Warren of Topeka, Kan.; brother and sister-in-law Marling and Francene Elliott of Clemson, S.C. and by several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held one hour prior to a 1 p.m. chapel service at Walker’s Funeral Home of Hillsborough on Thursday, July 15. Internment at Cedar Grove U.N. Church Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Walker’s of Chapel Hill. In liew of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church building fund, Box 138, Cedar Grove, N.C.
Bobby Gray Sprinkle
Mr. Bobby Gray Sprinkle, a loving and devoted husband, father, papa, brother, coach and friend was surrounded by his family and friends when he delared his independence from this world and entered Heavens Gates on July 3, 2004. He was born on Nov. 25, 1934 in Forsyth County to Homer Gray and Alma George Sprinkle, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Melvin L. Dudley. Bobby was a graduate of Old Richmond High School, class of 1953 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959, then with the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was an active member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church of Boonville and was retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. as an electrician. Bobby Gray loved sports and sharing his knowledge and ability with many by coaching numerous ball teams through the years. He coached the sport, but more important he taught his teams about honesty, leadership, good morals and values. Bobby was also an avid hunter. He was president of the Buck Trail Hunting Club for many years. He shared many laughs and smiles with all the members. Papas most loved moments were to encourage his grandchildren to be the best they could be. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Shirley Dudley Sprinkle; his cherished daughters, Tammy S. Raye and husband Jerry of Boonville; Tracy S. Riazzi and husband Mike of Winston-Salem; five very special grandchildren; Brooke W. Tucker, and husband Jon; Dudley G. Raye, Brittany D. Wolfe, Jordan M. Raye and Brittany J. Riazzi; a smiling and loving great granddaughter, Zoey Elle Tucker; a very special and devoted sister, Christine S. Smith of King and his mother-in-law, Josephine S. Dudley of Boonville.
The Sprinkle family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, July 4 at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Hwy 601 in Yadkinville. His funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 5 at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by the Rev. Ken Hand and the Rev. David Miner. Burial followed in the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery in Boonville.

Dorothy Vernon Upchurch
Mrs. Dorothy Vernon "Dot" Upchurch, age 83, of 167 Douglas Town Road, State Road, and formerly of Laurel Springs, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at her residence. She was the widow of George Robert Upchurch, and was preceded in death by brothers, Paul, Bill, and Cleo Vernon; a sister, Kate Osborne; and son-in-law, Sam Hamby. Dot was born in Guilford County, on February 7, 1921, to the late Pete and Ella Rhodes Vernon. She was retired from Troutman Industries and was a member of the Laurel Springs Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Hamby of State Road; a son and daugher-in-law, Robert and Carol Upchurch of Sparta; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Laymon Vernon of Summerfield; two sisters, Clarice Osborne of Summerfield and Bessie White of Walkertown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Building Fund. Family will receive friends at the home of Linda Hamby at 165 Douglas Town Road, State Road.
Jeffrey Lewis Whiteman
Jeffrey Lewis Whiteman, age 48, of Sparrow Lane, Elkin, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Whiteman was born January 9, 1953, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to Roy L. and Mary Belle Depew Whiteman.
Mr. Whiteman was employed by Carl Rose & Sons Asphalt Paving.
Mr. Whiteman was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ollie Cole; and an uncle, Clyde Whiteman.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Mayes Whiteman, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Troy Anderson, and Tonia and Jermel Boston, all of Johnson City, Tenn.; his parents, R. L. and Mary Belle Whiteman, of Blountville, Tenn; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Angie and Todd Dolan, of Greensboro and Susan and Gary Slusher, of Blountville, Tenn; three grandchildren; four nephews; and two nieces.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 10, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Don Wright. Burial followed in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

Anna Kay Nichols Hurley
Anna Kay Nichols Hurley, 65, of Millers Creek Community, passed away Monday, August 6, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Hurley was born on December 25, 1935, to Luther and Veada Bumgarner Nichols.
Mrs. Hurley is survived by her husband, Max Hurley, of the home; one daughter, Ila Hurley, of Durham; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rina Hurley, of Oxford; and six grandchildren, Lucas, Crystal, Jacob, Aaron, Elizabeth and Collin.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2001, at Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Nicholas Cheek.
Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Arvilla Guyer Chambers Salter
Mrs. Arvilla Guyer Chambers Salter, 91, of Elkin died Thursday afternoon at Willowbrook Nursing Center.
Mrs. Salter was born June 25, 1910, to John H. and Amanda Johnson Guyer. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin. She was a licensed practical nurse and a member of the Jonathan Hunt Chapter of the DAR.
Her first husband, Acree M. Chambers, and her second husband, Eugene Y. Salter, preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Selma Brendle, Savannah Powell and Willie Gentry; and one brother, Herman Guyer.
Surviving are one son, Bill (Sheila) Chambers, of Springfield, Va.; and one grandson, Mike (Shannon) Chambers, of Woodbridge, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Joe Dell Rust. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.
