Elijah L. Wood
Elijah L. Wood, age 81, formerly of Carthage, died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Avante of Wilkesboro in Wilkesboro.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2001, at the Red Branch Baptist Church cemetery in Carthage, conducted by Rev. Max Williams.
A native of Surry County, he was a United States Army veteran of WWII and a son of the late Luther and Lucinda Light Wood. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald E. "Buddy" Wood.
He is survived by three sons, Dr. John Wood of Elkin and Robert M. Wood and Bobby Dean Wood, both of Carthage; a daughter, Rebecca K. Wood, of Fayetteville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mae Bernice Poplin Swaim
Mae Bernice Poplin Swaim, 86, of Hamptonville, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Mrs. Swaim was born September 30, 1915, in Wilkes County to Tom and Eula Cockerham Poplin. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Swaim was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Pearson Swaim; and a son, Homer Cloys Swaim.
Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Caudle of Hamptonville and Geraldine Coe Dickerson of Hamptonville; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Grady Poplin of Elkin and Ivan Poplin of Jonesville; and a sister, Lucille Pardue of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Mountain View Baptist Church by Rev. Tim Tucker and Rev. Randy Johnson. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, and at all other times at 4737 Brown Road, Hamptonville.
Elizabeth Parks Lakey
Elizabeth Parks Lakey, 90, of Boonville passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit of Winston-Salem.
Born in Wilkes County on September 11, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Joan Shore Parks. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Company in Elkin. She was of the Baptist faith and was a beautiful Christian lady.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey B. Lakey; a sister, Mrs. John (Ethel) Pardue; and four brothers, Pervis Parks, Wade Parks, Raymond Parks and Nathan A. (Boyd) Parks.
Surviving are her sons, Ed (June) Lakey of Boonville, Fred (Frankie) Lakey of East Bend and Harold (Janet) Lakey of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Laddin (Melissa) Lakey of Boonville, Heather (Rusty) McArthur of Yadkinville, Amber (Mark) Rader of Richmond, Va., and Dean (Jill) Lakey of Richmond, Va.; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Beulah (Barney) Eaton of Winston-Salem. Survivors also include several close and loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2001, at the Gentry Family Funeral Chapel in Yadkinville. Interment followed in the Boonville Cemetery.
The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. 601 North in Yadkinville.

Myrtle Pruitt Barker
Mrs. Myrtle Pruitt Barker, age 83, of Joe Layne Mill Road, Elkin, passed away Monday, February 4, 2002, at Elkin Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Barker was born November 11, 1918, in Surry County to Thomas and Ida Carterof State Road, Judy and Lonnie Shelton, Carolyn and Kim Williamson and Margaret and Cecil Lawrence, all of Elkin; one brother, Raymond Pruitt of Elkin; one sister, Verlie Martin of Elkin; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church by Rev. Jonah Parker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Barker will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Mary Lou Hampton Redmon
Mary Lou Hampton Redmon, age 58, of Redmon Road, Ronda, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Redmon was born October 26, 1943, in Wilkes County to Cornelius and Willie Parker Hampton, of Roaring River; six brothers and sisters-in-law, William Parker, Larry and Mary Lou Hampton and Worth Hampton, all of Roaring River, Thomas Odell and Opal Hampton of North Wilkesboro, and McNeil Hampton and Ronnie Lee Hampton, both of Roaring River; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally and Russell Scales of Jonesville, Louthedia and Douglas Jones of North Wilkesboro, Virginia and Timmy Wilborn, and Sylvia and Phillip Hernandez, all of Roaring River; an aunt, Mary Lee Adams, of Jonesville; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Mount Valley Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Ralph Shipp and Brother Tyra Gene Martin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Redmon will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Mary Victoria Francis
Mrs. Mary Victoria Francis, age 92, of 560 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, passed away on Thursday morning, December 5, 2002, at Elkin Healthcare Center. Mrs. Francis was born on April 3, 1910, in Wilkes County to John Franklin Pardue and Martha Hemric Pardue. Mrs. Francis was a member of East Elkin Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters; and her husband, Cephas Coleman Francis.
She is survived by three sons, Coleman Francis Jr. of Chapel Hill, Larry Francis of Elkin and Roy Francis of Greensboro; one daughter, Kay Raynor, of Greensboro; 23 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2002, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Roy Lee Turner and Rev. Rex Walker. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening at Johnson Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

Clarence Robert Luffman
Mr. Clarence Robert Luffman, age 83, formerly of 630 Edwards Church Street, State Road, passed away Thursday morning, December 5, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Mr. Luffman was born on September 1, 1919, in Wilkes County to Troy A. Luffman and Tiny Couch Luffman. He is survived by three sisters, Annie Ruth (Bobby) Caudle of State Road, Kathleen Haynes of State Road and Bonnie Luffman of State Road; three nieces, Joann (Joseph) Cook of State Road, Faye (Jimmy) Luther of State Road and Nellie (Jake) Burcham of State Road; four nephews, Bobby Jo (Ruby) Haynes of State Road, Billy (Donna) Haynes of State Road, Jimmy (Tammy) Caudle of State Road and Dean (Jennifer) Caudle of State Road.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2002, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Daniel Merritt, Rev. Bobby Norman and Rev. Vernon Ball. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Luffman will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. prior to services. The Luffman family will receive friends Friday evening at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
