Albert Mitchell Collins
Mr. Albert Mitchell Collins, age 82, of 1150 Macedonia Church Road, Ronda, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at his residence surrounded by his family. He had been ill for the past year. He was born on August 21, 1920, in Surry County to Richard Paul Collins and Lura Johnson Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Collins; and a sister, Ella Money.
He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Rosa Lee Lyon Collins; a daughter, Frances Collins Morrison, and husband, Daniel; a son, Tony Collins, and wife, Midge; four grandchildren, Mark Morrison, David Morrison, Denise Collins Gambill and Mitchell Collins; three stepgrandchildren, Traci Reynolds Ivanov, Shannon Reynolds and Wes Reynolds; eight great-grandchildren, Mark Richard, Justin Michael, Dylan, Danielle, Jacob, Amber and Shyann; two brothers, Joe Collins of Elkin and Romie Collins of High Point; and two sisters, Stella Hooper of Elkin and Maxine Canfield of Winston-Salem. Mr. Collins was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon for 46 years. He served in World War II with the European Theater at the 313th Station Hospital. He was a strong, yet gentle man who was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word to everyone he met. He was the center of a family who adored him, from his loving wife down to his tiniest great-grandchild. He was "Papa" or "Daddy Albert" to many who were not related, but was still "family. His strength and guidance will be missed by so many.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Macedonia Baptist Church by Rev. Joel Blevins and Rev. Bill L. Pruitt. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The Collins family received friends on Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Ernest Homer Wilmoth
Mr. Ernest Homer Wilmoth, age 73, of Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. in Winston-Salem. Mr. Wilmoth was born November 13, 1929, in Wilkes County to Hobert and Nora Sparks Wilmoth.
Mr. Wilmoth was retired after operating a sawmill for most of his life. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Wilmoth and Fred Wilmoth.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy Wilmoth, Rick (Lynn) Wilmoth, Roger (Lou) Wilmoth and Jack (Donna) Wilmoth, all of Thurmond; one daughter and son-in-law, Gaynell (Herb) Anderson of Thurmond; one brother and sister-in-law, R.C. (Linda) Wilmoth of Elkin; three sisters, Verlie Bates of Thurmond, Velma (Zell) Bates of Ronda and Aline Caudill of Thurmond; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2002, at 3 p.m. at White Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Mozelle Owens Byrd
Mrs. Mozelle Owens Byrd, age 84, of 4640 Hwy. 21, Thurmond, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Byrd was born in Wilkes County on January 22, 1917, to Kent Owens and Vergie Holcomb Owens. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Talmadge Byrd; one brother, Charles Owens; and two sisters, Bessie Johnson and Leota Lyons. She is survived by two sisters, Bernice Brown, of Boonville, and DeEtte Wood of Greensboro; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday December 9, 2002, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. E.R. Wiles. Burial followed at the Roaring Gap Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Byrd’s body was placed in the church to lie in state from 10:30-11 a.m. prior to the service.

Anna Ruth Golden
Mrs. Anna Ruth Golden, age 83, of South Wall Street, Elkin, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Golden was born in Grayson County, Va., on July 30, 1919, to Andrew Isaac and Evaline Smith Johnson.
Mrs. Golden retired from the Sunbeam Corporation and was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Thomas Lee Golden, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy Dale and Cathy Golden, of Charlotte; one daughter and son--in-law, Diane Golden and Wayne Byers of Kernersville; one sister, Grace J. Smoot of Galax, Va.; two half-sisters, Irene Lackey of Lenoir and Florence Mooney of Mount Airy; three half-brothers, Andrew Johnson of Lowgap and Frank Johnson and Russell Johnson, both of Lexington; five grandchildren, Jessica Golden, Sarah Golden, Vince Golden, Jesse Byers and Mitchell Byers; and three great-grandchildren, Devin, Darian and Peyton Golden.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Bill Johnson. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Nealie Ellen Cothren Casstevens
Mrs. Nealie Ellen Cothren Casstevens, age 73, of 231 Church St., Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Elton Rovy Casstevens, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002. Mrs. Casstevens was born December 21, 1928, in Elkin to the late John Leff and Etta Mae Spencer Cothren. She was retired from the Mount Airy school system and was a member of the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Woody Long of Newport News, Va.; a grandson, Brian Ray, of Wilmington; and a sister Annie Lee Sparks, of Elkin.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with services conducted by Rev. Robert McCrary. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Elkin. The family received friends on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

Isaac Jerry Osborne
Isaac Jerry Osborne, age 80, of Thurmond Road, Thurmond, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mr. Osborne was born on November 9, 1921, in Wilkes County to Charles Andrew "Dack" and Emma Messick Osborne. He was retired from Pepsi Bottling Company, was a member of West Elkin Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during WWII. He was also a member of Wilkes County Buddies and Old Time String Band and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Isaac Jerry Osborne Jr.; three sisters, Tessie Stinson, Sally Osborne, and Lila Holcomb; and two brothers, David Osborne and Jake Osborne.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Miller Osborne, of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Eli (Myra) Osborne, of Union Grove; a sister and brother-in-law, Mattie (Tom) Spicer, of Elkin; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Osborne’s body was placed at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin to lie in state on Saturday afternoon. A graveside service was held on Sunday, November 10, at 2 p.m. at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church by Rev. Jim Prichard and Rev. Vernon Ball. A memorial service followed in the church. The family received friends following the memorial service.
The family appreciated flowers, and memorials may be made to Grassy Creek United Methodist Church.

Joseph Daniel (Dan) McCrorie
Joseph Daniel (Dan) McCrorie, 77, of 203 South Jonesville Blvd., Jonesville, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin after a long illness.
Mr. McCrorie was born in Southport on January 11, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Edna McCrorie.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Wishon McCrorie, of the home; three daughters, Connie and Robert Dew of Stokesdale, Carolyn and Gerald Scott of Greensboro and Danna Leigh McCrorie of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Helen Hoffman of Dallas; one brother, Jack Matthis, of Riegelwood; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Stokesdale United Methodist Church by Rev. Steve Joyce and Rev. Jessie Garmon. The body was placed in the church to lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Saturday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.
