Billy Dean Burchette
Billy Dean Burchette, 68, of Bowling Green, Va., died on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Burchette was born on June 13, 1934, in Yadkin County to Otto Redrick and Daisy Elizabeth Burchette. He was a United States Army veteran and was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; one brother; a daughter, Lisa Rose Burchette; a son, Gary Dale Burchette; and a granddaughter, Ashley Nichole Freeman.
Bill is survived by his wife, Olivia Jarvis Burchette; his ex-wife, Clara Mae Burchette; seven children, Mary Elizabeth (Lee) Long, Larry Dean Burchette, Brenda Carol (Magdaleno) Bautista, Jeffery Wayne (Susan) Burchette, Jamie Lee Burchette, Janice Leigh (Jorge) Valdez Rodriquez and Jeannie Rebecca Freeman; three brothers; two sisters; 18 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Burchette will be held at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Chapel, Yadkinville, by Rev. Conard Hatfield. Burial will follow in the Island Ford Baptist Church cemetery. The Burchette family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at Gentry Family Funeral Home in Yadkinville.
J.C. Pinnix
J.C. Pinnix, 80, of Jonesville, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mr. Pinnix was born on January 1, 1922, in Yadkin County to Jim and Rachel Swaim Pinnix. Mr. Pinnix was a WWII United States Army veteran and was a retired tobacco farmer. He was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church and the V.F.W. Post of Jonesville. Mr. Pinnix was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Roger and Junior Pinnix; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hemric Pinnix, of Jonesville; a daughter, Betty P. Greene, and husband, Joel, of Jonesville; a son, Bobby Wendle Pinnix, and wife, Jean, of Ronda; three sisters, Lois Stacy, Viola Witherspoon and husband, Zeb, and Esther Martin, all of Ronda; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mr. Pinnix will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at Swan Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Nat Thompson, Rev. Tim White and Rev. Jack Cook. Mr. Pinnix will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The Pinnix family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, and at other time at the home of his daughter, Betty Greene, 157 Greenfield Dr., Jonesville.
James Walter Nickelson
James Walter Nickelson, age 79, of Sawyer Road, Hays, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, at Old Roaring River Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stewart Roten and the Rev. Don Myers officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial with military rites by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Nickelson was born in Wilkes County on May 8, 1923, to Jim and Pearl Johnson Nickelson. He was a member of Old Roaring River Baptist Church. Mr. Nickelson served in the United States Army during World War II.
Mr. Nickelson was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Burchette Nickelson, and a daughter, Opal Byrd.
Mr. Nickelson is survived by one brother, Dewey Nickelson, of Moravian Falls; two granddaughters, JoAnn B. Norman, of Hays, and Teresa B. Roten, of Elkin; one son- in-law, Joe Byrd, of North Wilkesboro; and seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Nathan, Alex and Elizabeth Roten and Scott, Josh and Will Norman.
The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday.
Frank Delano Gray
Frank Delano Gray, age 64, of 4210 Old Hwy. 60, Hamptonville, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Gray was born in Wilkes County on June 4, 1938, to Grover Cleveland Gray and Letha Hemric Gray, and married Juanita Welborn on November 22, 1958. Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Wellborn Gray, of the home; a daughter, Kelley Nicole Gray, of State Road; a son, Jonathan Delane Gray, of State Road; one sister, Lois G. Swaim, of Hamptonville; two brothers, Clyde R. Gray, of Ronda, and Rev. Kermit L. Gray, of Mount Airy; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2002, at Dennyville Baptist Church in Ronda by Rev. Larry Lefler and Rev. Kenneth Jordan. Mr. Gray will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

C. Harold Holcomb
Clarence Harold Holcomb, of Shamrock Blvd., Elkin, had his earthly spirit released on November 13, 2002. He had been in declining health for two years and critically ill since being admitted to Forsyth Medical Center on June 13, 2002, for heart surgery. On August 15, 2002, he was air lifted to the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.
He was born on September 13, 1926, to Clarence and Anne Brown Holcomb, who preceded him in death. He grew up on Harris Ave. in Elkin. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Jolly Holcomb, of Elkin.
He is also survived by two daughters, Jan Story and Dana Holcomb; one son, Dale Holcomb; and two grandchildren, Courtney and Chris Story, all of Virginia. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Marty, and a step-daughter, Patricia Jolly Spencer, Archdale. Also, surviving are three sisters and a brother, Velda Holbrook, Rutherfordton, Opal Hemric, Calhoun, Ga., Patsy Holcomb, Elkin, Fred Holcomb, Thurmond. Preceding him in death were his first wife and mother of his children, Freddie Pinnix Holcomb, and a second wife, Maggie Hemric Holcomb. Also preceding him in death were brothers, Wilbur and bud Holcomb, and sisters, Ruby Hanes and Helen Miller.
He is remembered by many in this area as manager of the Shell station in Jonesville following World War II, of which he was a veteran. He later moved to Hampton, Virginia, where he retired from the Newport News Shipyard. Following his retirement, he returned to live in the Elkin-Jonesville area.
A heartfelt thank you is offered to the compassionate angels of mercy who cared for him in ICU #2, Forsyth Medical Center, from June 16, 2002, until August 15, 2002.

Effie Harvey
Effie Victoria Poston Harvey, of Centerclair Nursing Center and formerly of Welcome Bethesda Road, Lexington, died at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Centerclair Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Harvey was born on February 11, 1907 in Rowan County to Daniel Marion Poston and Julia Ann Bailey Poston. She was a member of Second United Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayes Henry Harvey Sr., who died January 16, 1989; five brothers; two sisters; a granddaughter, Gloria Frazier; one great-granddaughter, Anna Lewis Dorsett; and three son-in-laws, Clarence Davis, Tom MacDonald and Jerry Forrest.
Surviving are two sons, Hayes (Jimmy Harvey Sr.) and wife, Betty, of Lexington, and Thomas P. Harvey and wife, Sharon, of Elkin; daughters, Mary Forrest, Linda Leonard and husband, Buddy, Betty Rose Griffin and husband, Wallace, and Hazeline Davis, all of Lexington, and Elizabeth (Lib) Phillips and husband, Bob, of Pleasant Garden, Carol MacDonald of Greensboro, Alice Snider and husband, Robert, of Churchland, and Vicki Bemisderfer and husband, Bill, of Rocky Mount; 30 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel, 405 South Main St., Lexington, conducted by Rev. Jerry Moore and Dr. Billy Joe Leonard. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at Piedmont Funeral Home and at other times at the home of a granddaughter, Ronda Dorsett, 166 Will Snider Road, Linwood.

Annie Jane Amelia Collins
Mrs. Annie Jane Amelia Collins, age 82, of 324 Thurmond-Luffman Road, Thurmond, passed away on Tuesday morning, November 26, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Collins was born in Surry County on December 23, 1919, to Robert Childress and Amelia Hutchens Childress. Mrs. Collins was married to the late Jonah Frank Collins. She is survived by four daughters, Lucille Collins Macemore of Jonesville, Lilla Mae Poplin of Hays, Betty Jean Stanley of Thurmond and Gladys Collins, of the home; two sons, Rufus (Bo) Collins of Winston-Salem and Junior Frank Collins of State Road; one sister, Tishia Mae St. John of Jonesville; and a host of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2002, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Roger Pickett and Rev. Jerry Childress. Burial will follow at the Houstonville Baptist Church cemetery of Harmony.

Dorothy Brawley "Nanny Dot" Cummings
Mrs. Dorothy Brawley "Nanny Dot" Cummings, 77, of St. Paul Church Road, Hamptonville, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Nanny Dot loved all and was loved by all. She was born March 16, 1925, in Burke County to the late Rev. Samuel Jason "S.J." and Bernice Cook Brawley. Mrs. Cummings was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, a son, Joseph W. "Joe" Cummings; a sister, Louise B. Gunter; and a brother, Frank Brawley; preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William P. "Bill" Cummings, of the home; three children, William A. (Janie) Cummings, of Winston-Salem, Robert Grey (Kathy) Cummings, of Hickory, and Elizabeth C. (Donnie) White, of Dobson; a daughter-in-law, Lorene Cummings, of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six sisters, Edythe B. Woody and Mildred B. (Robert) Hoots, all of Winston-Salem, Betty B. (Charles) Agresta, of Burlington, Peggy B. (Carl Gray) Joyner, Fanny B. (John F. Jr.) Sizemore, Patricia "Pat" (Johnny) Martin, all of Yadkinville; three brothers, Rev. William B. (Edith) Brawley, Bob (Nell) Brawley and Jim (Gaynell) Brawley, all of Yadkinville; a sister-in-law, Emeth Brawly, of Hamptonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church by Rev. Jesse Clubb and Rev. William B. Brawley. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on U.S. 601, north of Yadkinville.
