Foy Leo Matthews
Mr. Foy Leo Matthews, 77, of Virginia Branch Road, Matthews, died November 24, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County on December 24, 1924, to James and Sarah Wooten Matthews. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Marines, and was a member of the Disabled Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a self-employed landscaper and an avid gardener. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; his parents; and two brothers.
Surviving Mr. Matthews are two nieces, Linda M. Garrett, of Conover, and Barbara Ann Matthews, of Wilkesboro; one sister, Rosa Chappell, of Hamptonville; two brothers, Jimmy Matthews and Elbert Matthews, both of East Bend; special friends, W.D. Westmoreland and wife, Donna, Steve Heath, Alisa and George Yannopoulos; and extended family and friends at Omega House Restaurant.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Carecenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27103.
Gary Michael Tulbert
Mr. Gary Michael Tulbert, age 55, of Cascade Avenue, Winston-Salem, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Tulbert was born on December 19, 1946, in Surry County to Frank Lee and Carol Martin Tulbert.
Mr. Tulbert was retired from the United States Postal Service and was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Tulbert.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Randy (Tommie Ann) Tulbert, of Elkin.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Elkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery by Rev. Brian Rummage.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Drawer 5507, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27113.

Fannie Talley Layell
Mrs. Fannie Talley Layell, age 85, of Lyles Street, Elkin, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mrs. Layell was born on May 20, 1917, in Yadkin County to James and Fannie Weatherman Talley.
Mrs. Layell was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlie Layell.
Survivors include one son, Joe Cleveland Layell, of Elkin; one daughter, Claudia Johnson of Elkin, one sister, Connie Darnell of Elkin, four grandchildren, Cynthia Hartis and Valerie Wooten, both of Greensboro, Brian Johnson of Philadelphia Pa., Stephanie Johnson of Gainesville, Fla., two great grandchildren, Will Wooten and Joe Wooten.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Brad Sallee and Jim Crater. Burial followed at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends on Friday one hour prior to the service.
Flowers were appreciated, and memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Betty Evon Jenkins
Mrs. Betty Evon Jenkins, age 77, of Bell Brook Apartments, U.S. 21, Hamptonville, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.
Mrs. Jenkins was born in Surry County on June 1, 1925, to Jules Marshall and Mary Cook Marshall. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dudley Ramson Jenkins, on December 26, 1975; three brothers; and one sister.
She is survived by four sons, Buddy Wayne (Dovie) Jenkins of Hamptonville, Billy Lee (Mary) Jenkins of Jonesville, Ronnie Dale (Janie) Jenkins of Boonville and Marty Dean (Nicole) Jenkins of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Ila (Opie) White of State Road; sister-in-law Josephine Marshall of State Road; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Danny Royal. Mrs. Jenkins will lie in state from 10:30-11 a.m. Burial will follow the services in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in State Road.

William Wayne Gentry
Mr. William Wayne Gentry, age 77, of CarterMill Road, Elkin, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Gentry was born November 14, 1925, in Yadkin County to Sneed F. and Cordelia Sebastian Gentry.
Mr. Gentry was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and attended Grassy Creek United Methodist Church. He was a past member of the Elkin Rescue Squad. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herman Gentry, Archie Gentry and Clyde Gentry; and four sisters, Bessie Foster, Bonnie Wood, Ethel Key and Eloise Tharpe.
Survivors include his wife, Wilda Holder Gentry, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Granville W. (Patricia) Gentry, of Kernersville; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine (Michael) Norris, of Boone; one brother, Lonnie Gentry, of Ronda; one sister, Ophe Welbron, of Stokes County; and five grandchildren, Joshua Gentry, Thad Norris, Jennifer Norris, Amy Norris and Seth Norris.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church by Rev. Jim Pritchard. Burial will follow at the Charity United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Gentry’s body was placed in the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family received friends on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

Ola (Mae) W. Cook
Mrs. Ola (Mae) W. Cook of Hamptonville died Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Cook was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Yadkin County to Walter and Lelah Ladd Whitaker. She was a greeter at Wal-Mart and was a member of Old Fashion Gospel Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce Cook; two sisters, Hester Whitaker and Minnie Wood; and two brothers, Bill Whitaker and Clayton Whitaker.
Surviving are three brothers, J. Roy Whitaker, of Hamptonville, Jerry Whitaker, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Sam Whitaker of Hamptonville; four nieces; three nephews; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew. The funeral service for Mrs. Cook will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, at Gentry Family Chapel, Jonesville, by Rev. Jack Cook. Burial will follow in the Old Fashion Gospel Church cemetery. The Cook family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville.
Stella Lou Bessie Smith Dezern Calloway
Mrs. Stella Lou Bessie Smith Dezern Calloway, 97, of Hamptonville, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville.
Mrs. Calloway was born on Dec. 14, 1904, in Surry County to Salomon and Annie (Annette) Pruitt Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Calloway was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Rovy Elmer Dezern and Roby Calloway; a son, Rovy Thad Dezern; a daughter, Irene Cave; a great-grandson, Dale Mosteller; and nine brothers and sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Pauline Mosteller, of Boonville, a son-in-law, Marvin Cave, of Boonville; two brothers, Dan Smith of Devils Lake, N.D., and Silas Smith of Castle Hayne; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Calloway will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, at Shady Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Wesley Mosteller and Rev. Paul Stewart. Mrs. Calloway will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the North Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.
The Calloway family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29 at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Shady Grove Baptist Church or to North Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Ancel Randon Gentry
Mr. Ancel Randon Gentry, age 84, of Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Mr. Gentry was born May 18, 1918, in Wilkes County to Shirley and Dosa Sebastian Gentry.
Mr. Gentry was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Oak Level Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Tucker Gentry; his twin brother, Stancel Gentry; four other brothers, Spergon Gentry, Pervis Gentry, C.C. Gentry and Martin Gentry; and a sister, Hannas Byrd.
Survivors include one son, Billy Ray Gentry, of Elkin; one daughter and son-in-law, Katie (Jack) Blackburn, of Elkin; two sisters, Edith Nelson and Velna Tilley, both of Elkin; one granddaughter and her husband, Karen (Scott) Durham, of N. Wilkesboro; and one great-granddaughter, Kary Durham.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Charity United Methodist Church by Rev. Tony Bowman and Rev. Ricky Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Gentry will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
