Edna Snow Pinnix
Edna Snow Pinnix, age 80, of Northridge Drive, King, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2002, at J.R. Jones Hospital. Mrs. Pinnix was born September 27, 1922, in Surry County to Thomas and Elizabeth (Bet) Steele Snow.
Mrs. Pinnix was a librarian at Northwest Regional Library in Dobson and was a member of Gum Orchard Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Pinnix.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Elaine Pinnix Jr. of Greensboro, Walter and Karen Pinnix of King and Ron and Lori Pinnix of Morganton; one daughter, Rachel Sealey, of King; two sisters, Frances Stathos of Austin, Texas, and Maynie Mayes of Dover, Del.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Bobby Billings. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

Bessie Lee Billings Harp
Bessie Lee Billings Harp, age 78, of Masonic Drive, Elkin, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin.
Mrs. Harp was born on December 14, 1923, in Wilkes County to Tyre Watson and Ellen Cardwell Billings. She was a member of West Elkin Baptist Church and retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co., where she was a past member of Chatham Wo-men’s Club. She enjoyed Bible study and participating in the activities at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel B. Adams.
Survivors include her husband, James Ellis Harp, of Elkin; a special friend, Irene M. Harp, of Elkin; two nieces, Ellen Brown, of Tacoma Park, Md., and Kathy McCain of Fla.; and two sisters, Ruby B. Sebastian, of Richmond, Va., and Peggy Brown, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at West Elkin Baptist Church by Rev. Dwayne Byrd. Burial followed at the Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery in Yadkinville. Mrs. Harp’s body was placed in the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center.

Doctor Daniel Hayes
Doctor Daniel Hayes, 71, of 111 Van Eaton St., Elkin, died Wednesday, November 6, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born on December 26, 1930, in Devotion to the late Everette James and Gaynell Saunders Hayes, was educated in the public schools of Surry County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service and a member of St. Home Missionary Baptist Church. Preceding him in death was his wife, Annie Ray Dobson Hayes; three sisters, Opal Porter, Doreatha Dalton and Carrie Bryant Ferguson; two brothers, Joseph Hayes and Henry Hayes; and a grandson, Dwayne Caldwell.
He is survived by a daughter, Leslie S. (Chris) Johnson, of Mount Airy; two sons, Daniel R. Hayes, of Elkin, and Alvin W. (Melody) Hayes, of Jonesville; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Glasgow, of Charlotte; four brothers, James O. Hayes Sr. and Samuel E. (Jessie) Hayes Sr., of Elkin, Paul J. Hayes Sr., of Devotion, and Robert N. (Nellie) Hayes, of Charlotte; two aunts, Lavonia Yancy, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Beulah Hayes, of Columbus, Ohio; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. at St. Home Missionary Baptist Church, Oak Grove Road, Elkin. The Rev. Clarence Hairston Jr., pastor, will be the eulogist, and Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30 at the church.

Pansy Mae Hanes Michael
Pansy Mae Hanes Michael, 91, of Boonville, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Center in Clemmons.
Mrs. Michael was born on May 17, 1911, in Surry County to Winfield and Ida Melton Hanes. She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Michael was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Early Ottis Michael; a son, Ottis Franklin Michael; a daughter, Stella May Michael; four brothers, Rufus Hanes, Hugh Hanes, Isaac Hanes and Clyde Hanes; and three sisters, Florence Michael, Melanie Fulk and Eulalia Grace Hanes.
Surviving are six children, Emma (Hardin) Bullin of Boonville, Benny (Judy) Michael of Rocky Mount, Va., Charles (Shirley) Michael of Orange Park, Fla., Mary Ruth (Raymond) Clark of Swartz Creek, Michigan, Edith (Harley) Wall of Yadkinville, and Faye (Fred) Childress of Mount Airy; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Michael will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Gum Orchard Baptist Church by Rev. Roger Pickett and Rev. Ron Chamberlin. Mrs. Michael will lie in state from 10:30-11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The Michael family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at Gentry Family Funeral Home in Yadkinville.
Irene Higgins Lovelace
Irene Higgins Lovelace, age 81, of Roaring Gap Road, Thurmond, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Lovelace was born on December 20, 1920, in Wilkes County to Charlie and Francis Cheek Higgins. She was retired from Cones Mill and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy C. Lovelace, and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Lee Lovelace, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Winfred Lee (Mary Lou) Lovelace, of Homestead, Fla., Billy Dean (Peggy) Lovelace, of Kernersville, and Bobby Gene (Vickie) Lovelace, of Greensboro; two adopted sons and their wives, Bobby Lee (Tangie) Lovelace, of the home, and Billy Dwayne (Lisa) Lovelace, of Boonville; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Don Hayes and Rev. James Hall. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

Rex Richard Cockerham
Rex Richard Cockerham, age 69, of Ivy Circle, Elkin, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Cockerham was born on March 6, 1933, in Surry County to James Arlie "Buck" and Vertie Lenoir Tally Cockerham. He retired from Chatham Manufacturing Company, where he was a computer programmer. He was a member of Elkin First United Methodist Church. Mr. Cockerham was also a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Cockerham.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Emaline H. Cockerham, of the home; and one daughter and her husband, Darlena Lenoir and Alan Goodwin, of Warwick, Rhode Island. He is also survived by a nephew, Jefferey Eldridge, and his wife, Lesa Eldridge, and their daughter, Jessica Rae Eldridge, who is a very special great niece. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Norma Goodman, and her husband, Wilburn Goodman, of Sparta, and five aunts, Connie T. Darnell, Fannie Layell, Violet Smith and Elsie Welborn, all of Elkin, and Ennis Nixon of Jonesville.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Elkin First United Methodist Church by Rev. Sanford Giles. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Elkin First United Methodist Church or to Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County.
The family will again receive friends at home after the burial.

Margaret White Troutman Poplin
Margaret White Troutman Poplin, 86, formerly of 654 West Main Street, Elkin, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at The Lutheran Home, Hickory West.
Mrs. Poplin was born in Iredell County on January 14, 1916, to Margaret McNeely and Martin Furches Pressley Troutman. She attended Statesville City School and Lenoir Rhyne College and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkin, where she was a longtime member of the Women’s Circle and choir. She was also a retired teacher of mentally-challenged children, who loved her dearly, a member of the V.F.W. Ladies’ Auxiliary, and on Sunday afternoons in the early 1950s, had a radio show on WIFM where she would sing. On September 30, 1935, she married William Roscoe Poplin, of Elkin, who passed away on November 29, 1979. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Jacob; and two sisters, Sarah and Katheren.
She is survived by four children, Margaret Ellen New Hampshire, and Miriam McNeely Abernethy of Vale; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church Of Elkin by Rev. Sandy Giles. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, from 1-2 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service.
