Hung Ngoc Tran
Hung Ngoc Tran, 82, of Cary died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at his residence. Tran was born Feb. 13, 1922 in Vinh Long, Vietnam. He was a retired Vietnamese Army officer who came to the United States in 1990. Since then, he had lived in the Raleigh/Cary area with his family. He became a U.S. citizen in 1996.
Tran is survived by his wife of 56 years, Suong Ngoc Bui of the home; three sons, Hon Tran and wife Son Chu of the home, Son Tran of Virginia, and Hoan Tran and wife Thu Van Duong of Chicago; one daughter, Nhu Suong Tran and husband Man Pham of Grand Prairie, Texas; and four grandchildren.
The Tran family received friends Sunday afternoon at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A funeral service was conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Cremation followed.
John Max Falter
John Max Falter, 73, of Apex died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. Mr. Falter was an active community servant since moving to Raleigh in 1965. He served on the N.C. State University faculty as an extension entomologist, retiring in 1981. He next taught and was the wrestling coach at Apex High School until 1990. He served as a lector at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, where a funeral Mass was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Mr. Falter is survived by his wife, Nancy Falter; children, Peter Falter and his wife, Christine of Orlando, Fla., Karl Falter of Apex, and Laura Zulueta and her husband, Emmanuel of Marlton, N.J.; grandchildren, John, Rebecca, David and Sarah Falter, and Anna Zulueta; and brothers and sisters, George Falter and his wife, Doris of West Bend, Wis., Rosemary Wagner and her husband, Daniel of Allentown, Wis., Frank Falter and his wife, Althea of West Bend, Wis., and Elizabeth Minz of Wauwatosa, Wis. His sister, Barbara Winnemuller, preceded him in death.
The family received friends Monday evening, Jan. 26, at Apex Funeral Home. There was a prayer service at 7:45 p.m.

Myrtle Pierce Johnson
Myrtle Pierce Johnson, 83, of Pittsboro died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 at Durham Regional Hospital. A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughters, Patricia Lee Johnson and husband, Ronald D. Singleton of Pittsboro, LaVinnia P. Johnson of Chatham County, and Diane L. Fowler and husband, William B. Fowler of Cape Carteret; sons, Darrow Ranshell Johnson and wife, Carol of Arcata, Calif., Joseph E. Johnson and wife, Karen of Greensboro and Williams O. J. Lynch and wife, Jocelyn of Wilmington; sisters, Honoree Butler and Violet Reynolds; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight, Jan. 29, 7-9 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home.

Eva Rigsbee Maynard
Eva Rigsbee Maynard, 87, of 1600 Old Maynard Road died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at Bryan Center in Durham.
Mrs. Maynard was a Wake County native and married to the late Walter N. Maynard. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Jim Boltz, Bob Weatherspoon and Ron Christ will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Maynard is survived by her sons, Earl Maynard and wife, Lil Chapel of Durham, and Eugene H. Maynard and wife, Anna of Morrisville; daughters, Martha M. Mitchell and husband, Joe of Franklinton, Colo., and Kitty M. Pope and husband, Charles of Phoenix, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 30, 6-8 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex and other times at the home.

Jean Dover Elliott
Jean D. Elliott, 58, died March 15, 2004, in Mosul, Iraq. She and her husband, Larry, were missionaries for the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.
Jean was born Sept. 21, 1945, in Shelby to the late Robert and Irene Roberts Dover. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1963. She attended Appalachian State University for two years, where she met and married Larry Elliott of Granville County. She felt the call of God to missions in 1972. While Larry attended seminary in Wake Forest, Jean completed her degree in home economics from Meredith College. She graduated with honors in 1977 and completed a year of graduate study at the seminary. Larry and Jean were appointed Southern Baptist missionaries in June 1978. They spent the next 25 years ministering to the people of Honduras. Last year, yielding again to the call of God, she and Larry began making preparations to transfer to Baghdad, Iraq, to begin humanitarian work there.
Jean is survived by two sons, Scott Elliott and his wife, Leia, of Raleigh, Todd Elliott and wife, Carol, of Arlington, Va.; one daughter, Dr. Gina Kim and husband, Dr. H. Chu Kim, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Jimmy (Barbara) Dover of Matthews and Bill (Judy) Dover of Shelby; four sisters, Nancy (Buford) Ellis and Carolyn (Jerry) Ledford, both of Shelby, Joyce (Ron) Whitten of Rising Sun, Ind., and Mary (Ronnie) Wilson of Kings Mountain; and nine grandchildren, Conner, Cody, Carson and Katie Elliott, Clark and Blake Elliott, and Addison, Meredith and Mackenzie Kim.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cary, 218 S. Academy St. Burial will follow at Grassy Creek Baptist Church, 9142 Grassy Creek-Virgilina Road, Bullock.
The family received friends Wednesday evening, March 24, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

Larry Thomas Elliott
Larry T. Elliott, 60, died March 15, 2004, in Mosul, Iraq. He and his wife, Jean, were missionaries for the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.
Larry was born Oct. 12, 1943, in South Boston, Va., to the late Conway and Lelia Nolan Elliott. He was raised in Granville County and graduated valedictorian from Oak Hill High School in 1962. He earned a degree in textile engineering from N.C. State University in 1966. While in college, he met and married Jean Dover of Shelby. After college, he served three years as an officer of the U.S. Army in Germany and Vietnam. In 1975, he felt the call of God to missions. Answering the call, he moved his family to Wake Forest to attend seminary, where he received a master of divinity degree. He and Jean were appointed Southern Baptist missionaries in June 1978. Larry and Jean spent the next 25 years ministering to the people of Honduras. Last year, yielding again to the call of God, he and Jean began making preparations to transfer to Baghdad, Iraq, to begin humanitarian work there.

John Bruce Grimm
John B. Grimm, 61, died March 15, 2004. He was a former resident of Cary for the past 14 years and was retired from Nortel Networks.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Constance of Apex; son, Thomas Cali of Wixom, Mich.; two daughters, Sara Grimm of Apex and Julie Cali of Fife Lake, Mich.; father, Lavon Grimm of Westland, Mich.; three brothers, Thomas Grimm, Terry Grimm and Michael Grimm, all of Plymouth, Mich.; one sister, Mary Lee Groth of Massachusetts; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Poole of Apex; and a niece, Jillian Groth of Massachusetts.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 19, at 3 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
Roland Hughes Hayes
Roland H. Hayes, 87, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Mayview Convalescent Center.
He was born to Jasper and Rosa Hayes in Lenoir County. He was a member of the Raleigh William G. Hill Masonic Lodge and the Scottish rite. Mr. Hayes retired as a sales representative from Boyle Midway, a division of American Home Products.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey of Cary; one daughter, Beverly Allen and her husband, Terry, of Cary; a twin brother, R.B. Hayes of Goldsboro; three sisters, Essie Mae Peterson of Kinston, Doris Grady of Deep Run and Mary Hill of Clayton; two grandchildren, Jennifer A. Rose and her husband, David, of Apex and Tyler Allen of Cary; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh. The family received friends in the church parlor prior to the service. Burial followed at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to the staff at Mayview Convalescent Center for the loving care that Mr. Hayes received for the past two years.
