Katie Lee Johnson Russum
Katie Lee Johnson Russum, 89, went to be with her Lord on Monday, September 13, 2004. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, educator and musician, she served her community in many ways.
Born November 3, 1914 in Wake County to Rev. J. Lee and Kate Maynard Johnson, she graduated from Fuquay Springs High School in 1931. In 1935 she graduated from East Carolina Teachers College and taught in Maury and Bethel Hill schools before teaching at the NC Orthopedic Hospital for Crippled Children in Gastonia. She taught in Harnett County schools and then in Wake County Schools from 1949-1977. A long time member of Wake Chapel Christian Church, she served as pianist, organist, Sunday School teacher and youth choir director.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. W. Russum and is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ella Wayne and Rod Helder of Raleigh and Dell and Paul Germeroth of Rock Hill, S.C. Five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 15 at Wake Chapel Christian Church from 7 until 9 p.m.; the funeral was held at the church on Thursday, September 16 at 11a.m.

Troy James Hilliard
Mr. Troy James Hilliard, 82, of Raleigh, was promoted to glory Friday, July 23, 2004. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Garner First Baptist Church. Burial was in Montlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Hilliard is survived by a loving wife of 59 years, Mary Azalee Johnson Hilliard; one sister, Mary Marsden of Dallas, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews, including Troy Marsden of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Theta Senter Hilliard; brothers, Othr, Johnny, Ralph, Turner, and Marvin Hilliard; and sisters, Sue, Eunice and Lois.
The family received friends and relatives from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at Sugg Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina.

Anne Rita Cook, age 91, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, 7300 Sunset Lake Road, Fuquay-Varina. Interment will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Monday, March 7, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, 401 N Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
Colleen Cotten Vaughn
Mrs. Colleen Cotton Vaughn, 82, died Monday, July 26, 2004, after a long, debilitating illness.
She was born April 16, 1922, in Harnett County to the late Alfonza “Fonzie” Leonard Cotton and Nolie Barbour Cotten. After graduating as valedictorian from LaFayette High School, she moved to Raleigh, where she worked as an office manager at A&P; for 39 years.
In 1949, she married Thomas L. Vaughn Jr., a World War II veteran and recipient of both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He predeceased her in 1953.
Mrs. Vaughn is survived by two brothers, Joseph Worth Cotten and Franklin Barlow Cotten, both of Fuquay-Varina; and a sister, Bonnie C. Hales of Midlothian, Va. Having no children of her own, she showered her many nieces and nephews with love and affection.
Surviving nephews are Danny Cotten of Fuquay-Varina, Michael Cotten of Little River, S.C., Johnny Cotten and Marty Cotten, both of Raleigh.
She was predeceased by her niece, JoAnne Godwin of Mount Airy and is survived by nieces, Donna Whitfield of Midlothian, Va., Glenda McLean of Kiawah Island, S.C., and Frankie McGee of Knightdale. In addition, Colleen leaves behind 11 great-nieces and nephews and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh.
A gregarious person who lived life to the fullest, Colleen enjoyed many lifelong friendships. She especially cherished her experiences and friendships with the many N.C. State University students who worked at and frequented the A&P; location where she was employed for so many years.
Colleen touched many lives with her laughter, generosity and lively personality. Her love for gardening, reading romance novels, Southern cooking, interior decorating and taking long walks provided her much happiness.
Her travels brought her to many exciting places, but none were closer to her heart than what she affectionately called “the old home-place” in Fuquay-Varina where she and her siblings grew up. She spent much of her free time there enjoying the company of family and friends.
Colleen was a vivacious lover of life – one who never met a stranger, always shared a smile and dutifully gave her best in all that she did. She will be greatly missed.
Family and friends were received at Sugg Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28 and at other times at the family home. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Sugg Funeral Home on Thursday, July 29, 2004.

Lenora C. Smith
Fuquay-Varina – Lenora Crutchfield Smith, 87, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday July 30 at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving, daughter, Diane Barbour and husband, Sam Barbour of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Jan Jones and Tony Arnold; 4 great grandchildren; brothers, John Crutchfield of Lake Gaston and Leroy Crutchfield of Aberdeen.
The family received friends on Thursday July 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.
Dovie Stephenson Currin Painter
April 24, 1917 – September 1, 2015
Fuquay-Varina - Dovie Stephenson Currin Painter, 98, formerly from Fuquay-Varina died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at her daughter’s home in Anderson, SC.
Mrs. Painter was born April 24, 1917 to the late Elder J. Shepard Stephenson and Lina Coats Stephenson.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Julius C. Currin and Clifton D. Painter; brothers, Leamon, Judson, Worth, R. A. and Glenn Stephenson; daughter-in-law, Peggy K. Currin; and son-in-law, Kenneth H. Powell.
She loved her Lord and her church, Rehobeth Primitive Baptist Church. Dovie considered her church Holy ground and was a faithful member. She loved her family with all her heart and prayed for every one of them daily.
Dovie was proud of her children, daughter, Judy Currin Powell of Anderson, SC; sons, Jerry T. Currin of Fuquay-Varina, Tony A. Currin and wife, Johanna, of Wilmington, Stephen C. Currin and wife, Wanda of Fuquay-Varina; and stepson, Tony Painter and wife, Kay of Clayton. She was very loved by her nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Her sister and friend, Ruby Stephenson Currin Gibson; and sister-in-law, Frances W. Stephenson, both of Fuquay-Varina also survive her, along with several precious nieces and nephews. They will all miss her sweet smile, twinkling eyes and encouraging words of comfort.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Rehobeth Primitive Baptist Church, in care of Kenneth Stephenson, 2500 Hwy 42, Willow Spring, N. C. 27592.
Visitation will be at Thomas Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.on Friday, September 4th. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Thomas Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5 th, with burial following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home of Jerry Currin, 713 Occoneechee Drive, Fuquay-Varina at other times.
