Jimmie was the 55-year old son of the late Burch Wicker Holland. He is survived by his mother, Mable O. Holland, a daughter, June, and her husband, Keith Propes, a son Jonathan Burch Holland, a daughter Jennifer Holland and a sister and her husband, Faye and Timothy Congleton, all of Holly Springs.
Jimmie received his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Education and Masters Degree in Education from North Carolina State University. From there he began his career in life long service to Wake County, as a teacher of Vocational Agriculture and Industrial Education at West Cary Junior High School with the Wake County Public School System. He continued his career as Executive Director, Wake Soil and Water Conservation District, where he carried out the development of the Crabtree Creek Watershed Project. During this time, this district became recognized as one of the most outstanding districts in the state. Jimmie then became the Contracting Officer of Wake County Department of Natural Resources, where he developed the use of Crabtree Creek Watershed Project for recreational use, known as Shelly Lake. He spent several years as the Director of Wake County Department of Natural Resources. His accomplishments in this capacity include the development of a program which involved comprehensive parks and recreation planning, as well as implementing the First Responder emergency medical response program in most all of Wake County, through fire departments and law enforcement agencies. He then became the Community Development Services Administrator of Wake County. He achieved numerous accomplishments in this capacity. Development and implementation of many of the improvements in the area of erosion, solid waste control and soil and water conservation are attributed to his leadership during that time. Jimmie spent most of his career as Assistant Manager of Wake County. The duties of this position evolved as the complexity of county government grew. Initially, there was only one Assistant Manager position. Then two positions, at which time he served as Assistant Manager of Operations. When the third position was created, he served as Assistant County Manager of Public Safety. From 1995 to his retirement in 1999, he served as the Director of Public Safety. Of all the service he provided to Wake County during his adult life, this was his pride and joy. He was held directly responsible for daily response activities of all emergency incidents in Wake County regardless of the significance of the incident. While serving in this capacity, he became a certified law enforcement officer and worked as a part-time officer with the Fuquay-Varina Police Department.
Jimmie was one of the founding members of the Holly Springs Fire Department and served as chief for 14 years. He was an active member of Holly Springs Baptist Church for many years, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon.
What he loved the most was his precious family, most of all, his children. He was a loyal and loving father, brother and son. His quiet loving spirit will remain with us forever.
His daughter, June and his sister, Faye would like to express their appreciation to the doctors, nurses, technicians, staff and volunteers at Rex Hospital for their compassion and support. Their kind hearts and demonstration of faith made this difficult time easier to bear.
